Chi Rei Kai South West Preserving Traditional Shotokan Karate - Being natural and intuitive to your own body, flowing Karate Not 'shape making' Karate!

As an independent organisation we aim to promote and practice Karate as Japanese Fighting Art. Whilst being inclusive and not elitist. Every member has their own reasons for training. We give some opportunity for Karate-ka to 'Specialise' whilst pushing to develop into 'well rounded' Students. Also giving our members access to both indigenous and experienced British Karate Instructors with access

to Japanese Instruction and concepts. We foster a Budo spirit and offer a simple no frills approach to training. We train in Kihon, Kata and Kumite as a progressive learning system incorporating pad and bag work for 'Hard contact' practice of Techniques. Whilst we are practicing with control we accept that there is a 'Managed' risk of injury. We try to developing a non violent philosophy whilst we learn to deal with violence and work on achieving a balanced and wholesome Character. Training in Karate until it becomes instinctive.

Today saw the Chi Rei Kai Dojo’s quarterly Kumite training, black and brown belt training and brown belt grading.

The venue was at Kingsbridge Community College on the First day of Spring!

Well done to Bella Buckley for passing 3rd Kyu… if you were unsuccessful today, then dig in, regroup and go again next time.

As 2025 comes to a close, we are incredibly proud of what our Karate Family has achieved. This year’s annual Competition brought together students from five dojos, with competitors of all ages showing remarkable skill, respect, and sportsmanship. From impressive kata and kumite performances to team demonstrations, our members truly embodied the spirit of karate.

Also there are new Black Belts and Black Belts that have moved up in grade, well done to those Students testing and leading by example!

Our quarterly competition training, Black and Brown Belt training and Black and Brown Belt grading.

Today Chi Rei Kai held our quarterly event at Kingsbridge Community College. The competition training was led by Jay Hawkes Sensei and the focus was around understanding distance and taking the initiative.

The group was then split between Ash Sensei, who took the Dan Grades through looking at the nuances contained in kata that was learnt as a Kyu grade applying Dan Grades lens. Going through each Heian Kata, Tekki Shodan, Bassai Dai and Jion (chunks) and analysing what principles of certain movements are present. This evolved into some partner drills to help understand those movements and viewing all of that through the more mature eyes of the Dan grade.

Jay Sensei who took the brown belts through Jiyu Ippon Kumite, Ushiro Geri and Bassai Dai linking the Kihon to Kumite and then into the Kata.

Then the grading candidates performed their syllabus in front of the grading panel as follows;
Ash Sensei, Jay Sensei, Sall Sensei, Mark F Sensei, Mary Sensei, Charlotte Sensei, Mark A Sensei.

As with any structured exam, not all candidates were successful. The unfortunate candidates who did not pass today, will regroup, dig deep and come back next time with gusto and spirit.
