Chi Rei Kai South West Preserving Traditional Shotokan Karate - Being natural and intuitive to your own body, flowing Karate Not 'shape making' Karate!

As an independent organisation we aim to promote and practice Karate as Japanese Fighting Art. Whilst being inclusive and not elitist. Every member has their own reasons for training. We give some opportunity for Karate-ka to 'Specialise' whilst pushing to develop into 'well rounded' Students. Also giving our members access to both indigenous and experienced British Karate Instructors with access to Japanese Instruction and concepts. We foster a Budo spirit and offer a simple no frills approach to training. We train in Kihon, Kata and Kumite as a progressive learning system incorporating pad and bag work for 'Hard contact' practice of Techniques. Whilst we are practicing with control we accept that there is a 'Managed' risk of injury. We try to developing a non violent philosophy whilst we learn to deal with violence and work on achieving a balanced and wholesome Character. Training in Karate until it becomes instinctive.

Today saw Chi Rei Kai Dojos meet in Ivybridge for our quarterly Kumite Session, Black and Brown belt course and Black and Brown belt grading.

The course began with Mark Firman Sensei teaching the principles of Oi Tsuki and their application within Kumite as his Tokui Waza.

The group then divided, with Jay Hawkes Sensei taking the Black Belts through the advanced kata Nijushiho and Hangetsu, all under the watchful eye of Ash Hawkes Sensei.

Meanwhile, Sal Hawkes Sensei, assisted by Mary Egginton Sensei guided the 4th Kyu and Brown Belt students through the principles and application of Mae Geri and Ushiro Geri.

The day concluded with the Brown Belt and Shodan candidates being examined by a panel of six senior Karate-ka as they tested for their next grade.

Congratulations to the following for their grading success;

Oscar Abbasi- Larkey - 2nd Kyu Pass
Tom Ward - 1st Kyu Pass
Storm Coulthard - Shodan Pass
Peri Langdale - Shodan Pass

Ash Sensei said “It was an extremely proud day for me personally, and I would like to thank everyone who attended, taught, supported, and helped make the event possible. Most importantly, congratulations to all those who stepped onto the floor, trained hard, and gave their very best”.

Today saw the Chi Rei Kai Dojo’s quarterly Kumite training, black and brown belt training and brown belt grading.

The venue was at Kingsbridge Community College on the First day of Spring!

Well done to Bella Buckley for passing 3rd Kyu… if you were unsuccessful today, then dig in, regroup and go again next time.

As 2025 comes to a close, we are incredibly proud of what our Karate Family has achieved. This year’s annual Competition brought together students from five dojos, with competitors of all ages showing remarkable skill, respect, and sportsmanship. From impressive kata and kumite performances to team demonstrations, our members truly embodied the spirit of karate.

Also there are new Black Belts and Black Belts that have moved up in grade, well done to those Students testing and leading by example!
