In a world that constantly asks us for more, Pilates invites us to slow down, breathe deeply and pay attention.

There is no competition, no expectation. Every movement asks for presence, and very breath encourages awareness.

Over time, Pilates becomes more than exercise. It becomes a way of reconnecting with yourself; noticing how your body feels, where you hold tension, where you need strength, softness or support.

The physical changes are often what people first notice, but the mental shift is just as powerful. A calmer mind, better focus and a deeper sense of balance in both the mind and body.

True wellbeing isn’t only about how the body looks, but how CONNECTED we feel within it. And with greater awareness, we notice subtle changes, respond with more care, and learn to support the body before discomfort becomes injury 💚

💪Matwork💪

These classes are suitable for those who have built a good level of strength, mobility and control on the Reformer and are looking for an extra challenge without the support of the Reformer carriage and its pulleys.

Expect a strong workout with a blend of the Pilates Matwork repertoire, some standing exercises and the use of various additional equipment such as weights, the fitness circle and barrels.

One Reformer class and one Matwork class per week is a fantastic way to stay in good shape!

Pilates is about connection, not perfection.

It’s not about achieving flawless form or moving exactly like the person next to you. It’s about developing a deeper awareness of your body; understanding how you move, where you feel strong, and where you need support.

Each exercise is an opportunity to build strength, control, and confidence in a way that works for your body. Some days movement feels effortless, other days it feels more challenging. Both are part of the process.

When you focus on connection rather than perfection, you create lasting results. You move with greater intention, listen to your body, and build a practice that is both sustainable and empowering 💚

JUMPING!💡

Our bodies need a certain level of impact to stay strong. That gentle, well-managed stress through the joints helps maintain bone density, which is particularly important for women as we age, supporting resilience and reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

Rehabilitation isn’t about avoiding movement, it’s about gradually rebuilding confidence within it 🙏🏼

And just as importantly, enjoying what you’re doing really matters ☺️ When movement feels good, you’re far more likely to stay consistent, and that’s where real progress happens.

There’s also scientific evidence that positive experiences with movement can help reduce the perception of pain, partly because an improved mood and sense of safety can influence how the nervous system processes discomfort. In rehabilitation, that shift can make a real difference 👌

Demand for Matwork classes has declined in recent years, largely due to the significant global rise in popularity of Reformer Pilates.

Previously, we offered both a modified, beginner-friendly Matwork class and a more dynamic, advanced option. We have now streamlined our timetable to offer a single Matwork class format.

These weekly classes, simply titled “Matwork,” are designed in alignment with Joseph Pilates’ original intentions. His Matwork repertoire was conceived as a progression from the apparatus, with exercises that are both dynamic and challenging. The apparatus, including the Reformer, Cadillac and Chair, was intended to support the development of strength and mobility, ultimately preparing the body for the demands of Matwork, which represents the most advanced expression of the Pilates method.

Accordingly, from now on our Matwork classes will be delivered at an advanced level, with some simplified modifications if needed. They will be best suited to clients who move confidently on the Reformer, or other apparatus (as in our Circuits class), and are ready to take on the added challenge of working without the support of the carriage and straps. Sessions may also incorporate additional challenges, including standing work and the use of hand weights. While similar in intensity to our previous “Dynamic Matwork” classes, you can expect a greater emphasis on traditional, “old school” Joseph Pilates exercises.

We strongly recommend that clients begin with our Foundation level Reformer classes before progressing onto Matwork. This approach allows you to develop the necessary control, strength and mobility, ensuring you are well prepared to move independently and effectively on the mat.

Getting people out of pain and moving confidently is what we do ❤️‍🩹

Shaun holds a black belt in Karate but for many years had unfortunately been suffering with chronic back and hip pain. He came to us with a fairly complex history of injuries and surgeries including 3 hip replacements (yes 3) as well as a knee replacement.

He had reluctantly accepted daily pain as his norm, and after years of pain medication and failed attempts to find ways to move better, he was recommended by a friend to see Nikki at Encore.

Shaun had his first session with Nikki 4 months ago and experienced a significant amount of pain relief immediately after. A combination of manual and movement therapy on a weekly basis has continued to bring him pain relief and a range of movement he had only dreamt of regaining.

Shaun now attends our Men’s Reformer group class and can’t believe he’s a regular Pilates goer!

Our studio director, manual and movement therapist, Nikki, has a few tips if you find yourself with back pain this holiday season🎄

From general stretches, to avoid your back seizing, to a very useful tip if you end up with a back spasm, this video is worth a watch and a share!

Deep, relaxing breaths to help you manage pain is proven to be a huge part of pain relief as it calms your nervous system and eleviates anxiety, that can make it worse.

Don’t forget to keep yourself moving this holiday and remember, motion is lotion 🤸🏿‍♀️

Merry Christmas! ✨
