I know how bad gym anxiety can be, especially if you’ve never been in a gym before.

I’ve had people come in for their first session who were genuinely nervous about walking through the door.

That’s why I think a lot of people get it the wrong way round.

They spend weeks looking for the perfect programme, the perfect diet or the perfect time to start.

In reality, your first goal isn’t to become fitter, stronger or lose weight.

Your first goal is simply to become someone who goes to the gym.

Get started.

Pick your days.

Get comfortable in the environment.

Find a goal that genuinely excites you.

Then create a plan.

Most people don’t need a better programme.

They need to stop overthinking and start building confidence through action.

The more often you show up, the more normal it becomes.

And before you know it, the thing that once made you nervous is just part of your routine.

If you’ve ever struggled with gym anxiety, let me know below šŸ‘‡

AUGUST… HERE WE GO šŸ”„

Event 4 for Kilmarnock’s Strongest Novice is LOCKED IN:

āš”ļø SANDBAG MEDLEY

āš–ļø Women: 30kg → 50kg → 75kg
āš–ļø Men: 75kg → 100kg → 125kg

Athletes will start with the lightest sandbag 10 metres away from the yoke.

Once that bag is loaded, you’ll move to the second sandbag positioned 8 metres away before finally tackling the heaviest sandbag sitting 6 metres from the yoke.

Rules are simple:

ā±ļø 60 second time cap
šŸ“ Yoke height approximately 46 inches
šŸƒ Fastest time wins
šŸ† If nobody completes the course, the athlete who loads the most bags in the fastest time takes the victory

This event is going to test speed, fitness, conditioning and your ability to keep moving when your lungs are screaming at you. šŸ’€

The weights might not look outrageous on paper, but after a sprint to the yoke and multiple heavy sandbag loads, you’ll soon find out why this event can separate the field.

🚨 Girls category has only a couple of spaces remaining.
🚨 Men’s category has around 5 spaces left.

If you’re thinking about entering, don’t leave it too late. Entries will be closing very soon, or sooner if all spaces are filled before the closing date.

This is shaping up to be an unreal day already šŸ”„

It was about time I gave one of our most reliable coaches a bit of the limelight.

And to be fair, it’s been a long time coming.

Scott has been with us for nearly 5 years now, which is honestly mental. I still don’t know how he’s put up with all of you for this long šŸ˜‚

More recently, Scott came on board with me for his own training. As we always say, even coaches need coaches.

The goal was simple. Get stronger, get fitter, improve his physique and throw some strongman training into the mix.

Since then, we’ve built his deadlift up massively, improved his bench and overhead strength, pushed his farmers carries to some huge PBs, sharpened up his yoke technique and put him through enough sandbag runs that I think he genuinely hates them now.

What I respect most about Scott is that he just gets his head down and does the work.

No drama.

No excuses.

Just turns up and gets on with it.

That applies both in training and in the work he does here every day.

A lot of you know Scott as the coach, but what you maybe don’t see is the amount he does behind the scenes to help keep everything running smoothly and support our members.

I’ve tried many times to convince him to step onto a strongman competition floor because I genuinely think he’d do well, but he’s more than happy staying out of the spotlight and helping others achieve their goals instead.

So here’s a wee bit of recognition that is thoroughly deserved.

Massive well done on all the progress recently, mate.

And more importantly, thank you.

Advance simply wouldn’t be the same place without you, and we appreciate everything you do šŸ‘Š

One of the biggest issues I see with people trying to stick to their diet is that they think healthy eating needs to be expensive.

And don’t get me wrong, it absolutely can be.

You can walk into a supermarket and see four Wispa Golds for £1, but a pack of six apples costs £2.50. Sometimes it genuinely feels like the unhealthy option is the cheaper option.

But a lot of the time, we just need to be a wee bit smarter with our choices.

Buy food in bulk where you can.

Don’t be afraid to shop at Aldi or Lidl.

Plan your meals before you go shopping.

Batch cook your food so it’s ready when you need it.

And try not to rely on meal deals, convenience foods and grabbing something on the go every day.

The more organised you are, the cheaper healthy eating becomes.

The reality is that most people aren’t spending more money on food because healthy eating is expensive.

They’re spending more money because they’re paying for convenience.

With a bit of planning, you can eat high protein, nutritious meals for an entire day for less than what some people spend on a single takeaway.

Healthy eating doesn’t need to be perfect.

It just needs to be planned.

A lot of people tell me they’re struggling with motivation when it comes to training.

And don’t get me wrong, motivation comes and goes for all of us.

But sometimes we’re making it harder on ourselves than it needs to be.

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that a lot of people never actually put themselves in the right headspace to train.

They come straight from work, don’t bring gym clothes, don’t bring a bottle of water, don’t bring a belt, sleeves or anything they normally use. They’re still dressed for work, still thinking about work, and then wonder why the session feels rubbish.

You’re not priming yourself to train.

You skip the warm-up, rush through the workout, don’t hit the numbers you wanted and spend the whole session thinking about when it’s going to be over.

If you want to feel more motivated in the gym, start by helping yourself.

Get changed into your gym gear.

Bring your water.

Stick your favourite playlist on during the drive.

Take your pre-workout if that’s your thing.

Do your warm-up properly.

Create a routine that tells your brain it’s time to train.

Because motivation isn’t always something you magically find.

A lot of the time it’s something you create.

Think about it…

You wouldn’t turn up to work in your jammies.

Why?

Because you’re not ready for work.

The gym is no different.

JOSH STEELE šŸ’Ŗ

When Josh first came to us, his goal was simple.

He wanted to pursue strongman and see just how far he could take it.

Since then, he’s lost 15kg, stepped onto the competition floor multiple times and faced challenges that would have stopped a lot of people in their tracks.

After dislocating his shoulder in his first novice competition, Josh could quite easily have packed it in.

Instead, he doubled down.

Months of rehab, rebuilding confidence and getting back to work eventually led to his next novice competition, where he placed 4th overall, won an event and finished joint 1st on another.

What impresses me most isn’t the results though.

Alongside training, Josh has started a new career path, gone into college studying sports coaching and still finds a way to consistently show up and put the work in.

Now don’t get me wrong, Josh isn’t perfect. Nutrition can sometimes be a battle and he has a habit of changing the goalposts on what his next goal is going to be šŸ˜‚

But one thing I can say is that when Josh commits to something, he gives it everything he’s got.

His overhead has improved massively.
His deadlift is stronger.
His moving events are better than ever.

Most importantly, he’s become a huge part of the Advance community.

He’s always willing to help others, share advice and support anyone looking to improve themselves, whether that’s in strongman or general training.

The next step for us is continuing to bring bodyweight down, improve movement, refine technique and build towards even bigger things over the next year.

I’m excited to see what a full off-season can do.

Proud of you mate šŸ‘
