Did you know our work boat Lavinia has a remarkable naval history? ⚓️

Before finding her home at Lawrenny Quay, Lavinia served as one of three ship’s boats aboard HMS Protector, a Royal Navy Antarctic patrol vessel.

Laid down in the 1930s on the Clyde alongside her sister ship HMS Guardian, Protector was originally designed for fast anti-submarine net-laying. But as Asdic (an early form of sonar) and hydrophones took over submarine detection duties, Protector found new roles—from carrying troops during the 1940 Norwegian campaign 🇳🇴 to patrolling with the Royal Australian Navy. 🇦🇺

She even transported over 1,000 Italian POWs from Bardia to Alexandria before suffering serious torpedo damage in Suez. After a lengthy repair in Bombay and a stint as a training vessel, she was refitted as an Antarctic survey ship, making over a dozen trips to the Southern Ocean.

When HMS Protector was scrapped in 1970, her ship’s boats—including ours—were put to work closer to home. We purchased Lavinia from Pembroke Port Authority and named her in honour of Lavinia Edmunds, the mother and grandmother of our current managers.

A special thank you to Paul Knight for researching and sharing this fascinating piece of history.

Last week we enjoyed moth trapping at Lawrenny Quay. 🐛🌙🦋
An early morning check of the moth trap revealed a great mix of species — over 20 recorded in just one night.

Our favourites included:
🪾Buff-tip, cleverly disguised as a twig.
🔥Scorched Wing, resembles burnt paper.
🤎Heart and Dart, its distinctive patterns giving it its name.
🍂Coxcomb Prominent, camouflaged as a brown leaf.
🐛The Cinnabar, with beautiful black and red markings.

This successful catch is a reminder of how important wild, untamed spaces are as habitats for a wide range of insects and other wildlife.
🐝🐞🦋🪲🕷️
Don’t worry, no moths were harmed and all were safely released!

🌼☘️We’re taking part in ! ☘️🌼

Once again this May, we’re putting the mower away and letting nature take the lead!

By skipping the lawn mowing, we’re giving wildflowers like daisies, dandelions, selfheal, buttercups, and clover a chance to bloom—providing a vital food source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

It’s a simple way to support wildlife and enjoy a splash of natural beauty right outside your door.

Why not join us? Let your lawn grow wild this May and see what pops up!

🐾Exciting new project at Lawrenny Quay!🐾

In collaboration with the Cymru Beaver Initiative 🦫 a family of beavers will soon be introduced to the tidal estuary at Lawrenny Quay, creating a more stable water environment.
Following years of research, experts hope these busy beavers will build a dam across the estuary just before the Lawrenny Quay moorings, regulating water levels in a natural and sustainable way.
The dam will create a reservoir, no longer affected by tidal fluctuations, that will enhance recreation around Cresswell Quay, Carew, and Lawrenny, providing an ideal setting for activities like kayaking and paddleboarding.
🛶🚣‍♂️🏊‍♀️
This initiative, which is part of the Cymru Beaver Initiative's broader efforts to reintroduce beavers to the Welsh countryside, is expected to improve local biodiversity and offer a unique experience for visitors and residents alike. Thanks to the beavers’ efforts, the estuary will become a peaceful, year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts, no longer restricted by tides.

Stay tuned for updates on the beavers’ progress and new recreational events this spring. 🦫

PS: Hope you’re enjoying April 1st...😉
