Our 2026 campaign was rounded off by a fun T20 matchup against a team of former Blakedown players making their return to the hallowed (astro)turf.

A vastly improved performance in the field saw us restrict our opponents to 123-6 from their 20 overs. Ali, Simon Day and Harry Chatwin took a wicket each, whilst 2 direct hit runouts helped slow the run rate down. Rob Chatwin (making a guest appearance for the opposition) top scored with 55*, and was well supported by Rich Beddall(17) in the final overs of the innings.

John Goodman and Dan Church put on a 54 run opening partnership to give us a flying start in the chase, despite some excellent attempts to run each other out.

Blakedown Old Boys hit back with 3 quick wickets, but a rapid 30 from Ali broke the back of the run chase before Dan wrapped up the game, and reached his half century, with a big six over mid wicket.

The final special mentions of the season go to:
* Dan for an unbeaten fifty and a direct hit run out (which Chad Leslie congratulated Harry for 🤷‍♂️)

* Ali for hitting 3 consecutive sixes.

* Simon Tranter for rolling back the years and conceding just 7 runs from his 3 overs for Blakedown Old Boys.

* Nic Andrew for taking catch of the season 2 weeks ago and quite rightly calling me out for not mentioning it 🤦‍♂️

* All of the former players for returning and making it a hugely enjoyable afternoon.

* And last but not least, everyone who’s played for the club this season. That includes the regular players, the occasional players, the even-more occasional players and the lads from Oldswinford Cricket Club who have turned out and added some much needed youth (and quality!) to the starting eleven. 👏🏻

Our winning run came to an abrupt end on Sunday, as we proved the old cliche that catches win matches.

According to a wise spectator (aka an injured John G), we spurned 11 chances in the field, and whilst some of them were firmly in the ‘seriously tough’ bracket, we grassed more than enough easy opportunities to have avoided our 6 wicket defeat to Avoncroft Cricket Club.

In truth, we also underperformed with the bat, as only Harvey Stokes passed 30 in our under par total of 156-8.

Thanks to excellent opening spells from Billy and Toby, plus solid efforts from Yianis Goodman and Simon Day, we kept ourselves in the contest. However, those dropped catches allowed Avoncroft to reach their target with 4 overs to spare and consign us to our first defeat since June.

* Chad Leslie for passing 100 runs for the club.

The Blakedown cricket honours board added a new name on Sunday afternoon, as Simon Day recorded his first century for the club in our exciting 12 run victory at Springhill.

After Springhill broke with Sunday cricket protocol and choose to field first, Simon’s 108 formed the back bone of our impressive total of 246-7. Harvey Stokes was second top scorer with a rapid 38, whilst useful contributions from Vlad and Oscar helped keep the run rate motoring along.

Springhill made an excellent effort chasing our total, but we took wickets at key times, starting with an early breakthrough by John G and continuing with Rob (2-22) and Simon (2-26). The hosts remained in contention until the final few overs, but an important wicket from Vlad, plus a direct hit run out from Yianis Goodman enabled us to keep them at bay and record our fourth Sunday win in a row.

* Trev for keeping very well on an extremely tricky wicket.
* Rob for his best bowling spell of the season.
* Vlad for a solid debut with bat and ball.

A five-fer for the captain, a seventh consecutive 50 for one opening batter and a first fifty for (approximately) 40 years for the other opening batter, were the highlights of a comfortable 6 wicket victory over Hockley Heath on Sunday.

After being asked to field first on a blistering hot afternoon, we stuck to our task despite some big shots from the visitors early on. Yianis Goodman continued his excellent season with 2-26, whilst Simon Day tied things down on the middle overs with 1-19 from his seven overs - that wicket coming courtesy of a one handed, over the shoulder, catch of the season (sorry Mitch Roberts!) from Mark Candlin at mid wicket.

Hockley looked primed for a late innings surge,but stand in captain Rob Chatwin wisely bought himself on for the death overs and picked up a superb 5-14 from 5 overs to restrict the opposition to 160-8.

Any fears that it would be a tricky chase were swiftly erased, as Mark and Simon put on the highest opening stand of the season. After Simon retired out for 76 (his 7th consecutive 50+ score) in a shameless attempt to preserve his average, Mark duly completed his first 50 since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The visitors picked up a couple of late wickets to make the score line look more respectable, but Josh Dawe saw us over the line with more than 8 overs to spare.

* Vaseem Ershed and Harry Chatwin for bowling well on their first appearances of the season.
* Harry for dropping two catches in an over.
* Vaseem for probably the worst LBW appeal in the history of cricket.
* Mark for 3 catches (including the aforementioned catch of the season) to add to his 50.
* Captain Jon Preston for coming along to umpire despite his injury.
* And last but not least, Rob for celebrating his 5 wicket haul by buying a round at the bar 🍻

A comprehensive midweek cup final win 🏆 , plus a successful run chase on Sunday 🎉 meant it was one of the most memorable weeks in club history.

First up, our Wednesday team produced a destructive batting display to score a mammoth 222 from just 12 (8 ball) overs. Jon Preston and Rich gave us a blistering start with a 100+ opening partnership, before Rob came in to smash 60 not out and put the game firmly out of our opponents reach. Despite failing to take a wicket during the reply, our total was never under threat and we recorded a comfortable 92 run victory to secure our first (and last) piece of silverware of the season.

We then travelled to Cutnall Green on Sunday to take on Flyford Flavell in a 35 over game. After being asked to field first, some tidy early bowling was not backed up in the field, as we put down two catches (Nb: is it a dropped catch if the fielder fails to get a hand to it and it lands at his feet? 🤔), allowing the hosts to race to 80-1 from 14 overs.

Yianis Goodman (2-48) and Simon Day (2-35) slowed the run rate down with 2 wickets apiece, and despite the home side successfully rebuilding, Rob (3-15) stopped any late innings acceleration, enabling us to restrict Flyford to 201-8.

Simon (96 not out) anchored the run chase with his highest score for the club, whilst Mitch (31), Nick (18) and Harvey Stokes (16) all provided useful support, enabling us to just about keep up with the run rate. It all came down to the final 2 overs, and after Harvey departed with just 4 required, John G came in to smash the winning runs with 6 balls remaining.

A fantastic week for the club (and fully deserving of this extra long report) so a massive congratulations to everyone involved! 👏🏻

Next Sunday sees us take on Clent in a local derby starting at 1:30pm 🏏

It was a Sunday to remember for Blakedown bowler Yianis Goodman, as he bagged his first ever five wicket haul, helping us achieve a resounding 68 run victory over Old Georgians.

The afternoon began with a solid home batting display, as Simon Day (78) and Jon Preston (34) gave us a strong platform from which Rob (49*) and Harvey Stokes (31*) powered us to 236-4 from our 35 overs.

Despite two tidy opening spells from John and Albie, the visitors were well placed at 65-1 after 14 overs. However, the introduction of Yann (5-27) and Simon (4-26) completely flipped the game on its head as Old Georgians lost 7 wickets for just 40 runs to leave their chase in tatters.

There was a brief flurry by the lower order but Yann returned to the attack to complete his five wicket haul by picking up the final two wickets. The first coming courtesy of an excellent boundary catch by his dad, before a neat stumping from Harvey completed the victory.

Special mentions this week to Chad for bowling his first overs of the season, Captain John for dropping a catch from Chad’s first ball of the season, Harvey for another superb display behind the stumps, and Yann for celebrating his performance by buying a round at the pub afterwards 🏏 🍻

Our one game winning streak came to an abrupt end, as we fell to a 6 wicket defeat at Clent on a sweltering hot Sunday afternoon.

After Jon Preston won the toss for a change and elected to bat, we lost a wicket before getting any runs on the board and were soon 35-3 against a strong home bowling attack. Simon Day (54) and Rob (61) steadily rebuilt the innings, and thanks to some excellent late hitting from the latter, plus a few decent lower order contributions, we reached a very respectable 183-7 from our overs.

Our hosts made a decidedly better start with the bat and raced to 79-1 off the first 9 overs, with the only wicket coming courtesy of a direct hit run out from debutant Josh Dawe.

Rob (0-25) and Simon (3-18) then dragged us back into the game with two tight seven over spells, but despite a few near misses, the home side reached their target with 4 overs to spare. Nevertheless it was an excellent effort from everyone, especially as we were missing a few key players.

Special mention to Clent for some superb sportsmanship and Sunday cricket spirit after they withdrew an appeal following an erroneous ‘out’ decision. 👏🏻

We’re at home to Old Georgians next Sunday (1:30pm) in what is sure to be the biggest sporting event taking place that day! 🏏

Our long losing run finally came to an end on Sunday, as we produced our best display of the season to defeat Blackwood by 8 wickets. 🎉

Harvey Stokes was the pick of the bowlers, as his 1-15 from 7 overs stopped the visitors from gaining any momentum at the start of their innings. Albie (1-28) Yianis Goodman (1-28) and Simon (2-30) also bowled tidily to keep the run rate down, whilst a worldie catch in the slips from Mitch Roberts, a juggling effort from Jon Preston in the deep and a solid display behind the stumps from Trev supported the bowling effort and allowed us to restrict the visitors to 161-5.

The start of our reply could best be described as cautious/turgid/sedate/mind-numbingly dull, but whilst some members of the team decided to catch up on some sleep ahead of the England game, Mark and Simon slowly got on top of the bowling to put on a season’s best partnership of 117. After Mark fell for 17, Simon ploughed on to reach 81 before being dismissed with just 15 runs required. Mitch and Johnny P duly knocked off the remaining runs to secure
a much needed victory.

We’ll be attempting to make it back to back victories when we travel to Clent next sinday (1:30pm start) 🏏

Our losing run continued on Sunday, as we fell to a five wicket defeat against our friends from Stourbridge Social, on an otherwise enjoyable afternoon.

Batting first, we came flying out of the blocks and thanks to a quick fire 52* from Simon, we raced to 86-1 after just nine overs. But after that, the runs dried up and wickets fell at regular intervals.

John G held the back end of the innings together with a well made 26, but our final total of 212-8 looked somewhat short of par on a friendly wicket and a lightning fast outfield.

John was once again at the forefront of our bowling efforts as his two wickets in two overs gave us the perfect start. Unfortunately, his subsequent injury, plus below par displays from our other bowlers and a somewhat ‘back heavy’ opposition batting lineup, saw the visitors cruise to their target with around five overs to spare.

⭐ Special mention to Albie and Trev for making the most of rare outings with the bat by scoring 16* and 9* respectively.

We’re at home again this Sunday, as we take on Blackwood in a 35 over game starting at 1:30pm 🏏

Sloppy fielding and a stuttering batting display saw us fall to a narrow 5 wicket defeat at a sweltering hot Overbury on Sunday.

After deciding to bat first on a challenging wicket and faced with some unexpectedly (for a Sunday afternoon) skilled bowlers, we limped along to 147-8. Simon top scored with 52 not out, whilst debutant Gullum added a hard hitting 20 to help us reach something vaguely respectable and defendable.

Tasked with fielding during the hottest part of the day, we made a serious of characteristic (not a typo) errors to allow our hosts to make a rapid start. Tight spells from Yan (1-21) and Gullum (0-21) in the middle overs gave us a sniff of an unlikely victory, but despite three wickets in two overs for Oscar and a miserly 5 overs from Simon (1-15), Overbury crept over the line with 6 balls to spare.

Next up, we take on Stourbridge Social at home on Sunday afternoon (1:30pm) 🏏
