7 years ago today 9th September, Amity held its first classes.

Over the years, we’ve grown into a large community of students, parents and supporters, reflected in the opening of our very own martial arts centre this year.

Want to jab forward without leaving your head on the centre line? 🥊

That’s where the split jab becomes really useful.

Instead of simply stepping forwards and throwing the jab, you’re combining three movements at the same time:

🥊 Jab as you move
↘️ Slip your head off the centre line as the punch travels
↔️ Split the feet out so you land balanced

The slip is key. You’re not just closing distance, you’re moving your head away from the line of a potential counter while throwing your own shot.

From there, step through and bring the cross into play.

Skip. Slip. Jab. All at the same time.

Then land balanced and continue the combination. 👊

Do you know how to bow correctly in Taekwon-Do? 🥋

It might seem simple, but the bow is one of the first things every Taekwon-Do student should learn.

In Korean:

🇰🇷 차렷 (Charyot) = Attention
🇰🇷 경례 (Kyong Ye) = Bow

On the command of “Charyot”, stand at attention with your heels together, feet pointing outwards and hands closed away from the side with the knuckles pointing forward.

On “Kyong Ye”, bow forwards from the waist, keeping the movement controlled, then return to the attention position.

The bow is used throughout ITF Taekwon-Do to show courtesy and respect, from entering the dojang to beginning and ending training with an instructor or partner.

It’s often misinterpreted as the students bowing down to the instructors. The bow should be a mutual exchange of respect between two Taekwon-Do practitioners regardless of rank.

Simple, but fundamental. 🥋

Struggling to stay balanced on your spinning hook kick? 🥋

Think of your body like a seesaw.

As the kicking leg comes up on one side, your head and upper body need to counterbalance it on the other.

⚖️ Kicking leg goes up, upper body adjusts
🔄 Let your body work with the kick, rather than fighting against it
⬆️ As the kick finishes, bring your head and upper body back upright

That last part is important.

If your upper body stays dropped after the kick, your weight remains out of position and you’ll struggle to regain your balance.

A good reverse turning hooking kick isn’t just about flexibility or how high you can kick. It’s about understanding how to control and balance your body throughout the entire movement.

Think seesaw. Kick, counterbalance, then return. 👊

Want more power in your front snap kick without losing control? 🥋

In this clip from our Adult & Teen Taekwon-Do class, we’re working on Ap Cha Busigi, focusing on where the power actually comes from.

⬇️ Drop your weight into the technique.
💥 Drive through with the hips.
🥋 Let the leg deliver the power, rather than just flicking from the knee.

But when the pad comes out, don’t confuse power with pushing.

Trying to force your foot through the pad can pull your body forwards and leave you off balance. Hit with intent, then regain control of the kicking leg and your stance.

Power means very little if you can’t control it.
