BHS Ride Out UK

BHS Ride Out UK We’re British Horse Society. The British Horse Society is the UK’s largest and most influential equestrian charity working to improve equestrian access.

The UK’s largest equestrian charity.

We champion horse and rider safety, access, education and care, helping every horse and person enjoy that amazing feeling.

We achieve this through an access team at our HQ in Stoneleigh, and a network of more than 200 experienced, voluntary bridleway officers, and a growing 150 Equestrian Access Groups throughout England, Scotland, Wales

and Northern Ireland. The British Horse Society's Equestrian Access Groups are an important part of our society and not only uphold our values and promote equestrian access at a grass-roots level - they can be a fun, sociable meeting place for riders, carriage drivers and horse lovers, and make a difference for future generations in their area. We encourage the groups to forge links with us, so we can work together for the common good of all horses, riders and drivers. We have nearly 150 Equestrian Access Groups affiliated to us, and would encourage anyone who has an interest in horses and would like to do more to champion equestrian access in your area, to consider joining us. Contact [email protected] or look on our website to find your nearest group. The British Horse Society cannot achieve the great successes we do without members. If you would like to join us, support our work, and reap the benefits of BHS membership, please visit our website www.bhs.org.uk.

Behind every open route and improved path, there are volunteers giving their time to help others enjoy the countryside and green spaces. This Volunteers’ Week, we’re proud to celebrate our access and rights of way volunteers and EAG’s for all they do. 🐎✨

Sharni Longley, Access & Bridleways Officer for Neath Port Talbot, Wales; said
🗨️ “My love of horses started from a young age, I would look forward to my riding lesson every week, it couldn't come quick enough! I really enjoy hacking, exploring the countryside is my favourite thing to do.

Improving access is vital in our communities, whether we are working in partnership with local authorities to keep our bridleways clear, open new access, have a voice for equestrians regarding active travel plans, or liaising with big companies such as wind or solar farms, we could otherwise easily slip under the radar.

My appreciation for our off-road riding and carriage driving is what makes this role so rewarding! Volunteering for BHS enables me to access training and resources and with any projects that I work towards, they are right behind me with the support if needed.” 💬

To all the BHS volunteers out there, from all of us in the Access Team, we would like to say another huge thank you for everything you do. 👏🏻

Clean Sport for All 🐴

📆 Wednesday 24 June
⏰ 7-8pm

Join Sandra Hill, Equine Anti-Doping Programme Manager at British Equestrian, as she highlights why clean sport matters. 🐎

Equine anti-doping protects horse welfare, ensuring no substances are used to mask injury or illness, and keeps competition fair for all. Whether you're a seasoned competitor, or stable with someone who is, it's important for all horse owners to understand best practice when it comes to caring for our equines. 💚

Together, we can uphold integrity, fairness, and respect for every horse. 🫱🏻‍🫲🏻

As you may know it’s Volunteers’ Week, and we’re saying a huge thank you to our volunteers. From helping keep routes open and welcoming to supporting safer, easier access for everyone, the work you do makes a real difference. 🙌🏻

Over the next few days, we will be hearing from just a few of our fabulous volunteers about why they volunteer and some of the brilliant work they get up to. 💚

We spoke to Access & Bridleways Officer for North East London, Joanne Alexander-Sefre, who told us about why she became a volunteer.

🗨️ “When I was 3, my mother bought her first horse plus a Dartmoor for my sister and me. I am now 65 and proud to have ridden and owned horses ever since. I pony clubbed, hunted, showed in-hand and under saddle but always loved most of all riding out in the countryside on preferably a Welsh Cob!

At one point I had 15 horses but now own/ride at least 2-3 times per week a couple of wonderful Welsh Cobs, Alfie the Highland, Sammy the Haflinger. Growing up on an Arabian/Welsh Section D stud, my mother was for years BHS Welfare officer and I have been a member for many years. I was used from a very early age to riding alone on the roads including crossing the busy A63 dual carriageway outside Hull (wait for a gap, to the middle, wait for another gap in the trucks and then across to the farmland beyond!) so living on the edge of London and Essex and riding on the busy roads and getting my horses also used to doing so, has never phased me. I have set up a riding network and large team of riders and supporters, and this is my greatest achievement, making so many wonderful friends through this and through the BHS network.

I was so keen to volunteer for the BHS as I am passionate about horse riders and carriage drivers being able to access forest riding, bridle and permissive paths and encouraging riders to be confident enough to be out and about on the roads in order to reach them. For sure I aim to continue riding as long as my hips let me and to support the BHS too and hope this year to help open up new off-road routes.

How to choose 3 words to sum up horses? I would say even on the muddiest and coldest winter's day the words that spring to mind to describe what horses bring are joy, sanity and friendship (plus if allowed one more, that feeling of pure exhilaration when cantering or galloping through beautiful forests!)” 💬

If becoming a BHS volunteer sounds like fun to you why not join our community 👉🏻www.bhs.org.uk/support-us/volunteering/access/

🙋🏻‍♀️ Hands up if you’re craving fresh air, open spaces, and a sense of freedom! 🌿🐾

If that sounds like you, why not take part in this year’s Rideathon Challenge? Galina and her horse took part last year and shared their experience with us:

💬 “I did my first Rideathon after moving to new area in 2020 and have taken part every year since. I took part as a challenge for myself to see how many miles I could do and give myself something to work towards for a sense of achievement. It is also great to encourage me to get out, rather than finding excuses not to ride. It is also a good reason for finding new routes, and I also look for fun rides to take part in. My horses love getting out, and I can't wait to take part again.” 💬

Join Galina and take part in Rideathon this July 👉🏻 www.bhs.org.uk/support-us/fundraise/rideathon

🌟 This week is Volunteers' Week dedicated to celebrating the brilliant people supporting our work 🌟

A HUGE thank you to goes to our incredible Volunteers, Historical Researchers and Equestrian Access Groups! We want to take a moment to recognise the fantastic work carried out by our dedicated team, our passionate volunteers and EAGs, and the brilliant Historical Researchers who give so much of their time and expertise. 🙏🏼👏🏼👨🏻‍👩🏼‍👧🏻‍👦🏼

Your commitment to improving equestrian access and recording our precious historical rights of way makes a real and lasting difference. Every hour spent researching, checking routes, and sharing knowledge safeguards access for future generations of equestrians. 🐴🗺️🌳

Following a recent Project 2026 training course, we received this lovely feedback from an attendee: 🗨️ “Thank you for the super work the BHS is doing.”

Feedback like this reflects the impact of your efforts, and we couldn’t be prouder or more grateful for everything you do. 💛

Thank you for helping protect the past and empower the future of equestrian access. 🐎✨
