Last night our Veterans side blazed their way into the Semi-Finals of the Emergency Services Football League Cup with a 1-2 win away to strong Warwickshire Fire Service who had recently finished top of their group. Cambs had the run of the game from it's infancy with some stylish football despite Warwickshire being expectedly physical and strong off the ball. Cambs came close in the early stages with Craig Flavell and Jimmy Bowen powering into the box but not managing to hit the target. Warwickshire fought back the flames with some progressive through balls from the midfield, however it was Cambs that were able to douse these away.
The opening goal came from a long range free kick on the right side of the box that managed to deflect off a Warwickshire defender and into the back of the net. Cambs came close again soon after with a rocket from left back Steve Girdlestone that almost caught the keeper mid-nap.
Cambs expected a onslaught in the second half, which came but fizzled out quickly for the home side as Cambs stylish and creative football again began to ignite. With calmness and fluidity hosing out some solid attacks from Warwickshire, it was the travelling side that snatched the well deserved second goal. Captain Craig "Fozzy" Foster driving down the right channel, beating two players, and firing an absolute cannon to the far left of the helpless Warwickshire keeper. Warwickshire were able to grab a well worked goal back but it only ever appeared a consolation in the dying embers of the game. Cambs coming close again, hitting the crossbar before letting their football carry them into the semi-finals.
