After winning the 80km CER at Shuckburgh Hall, Powys rider Fiona Griffiths and her remarkable 20-year-old Anglo Arab Balishla ("Goofy") were back in the winner's enclosure again, this time at the stunning Boconnoc Endurance Ride in Cornwall.

If anyone thinks endurance riding is all about speed, Fiona's story is a reminder of what the sport is really about โ€“ partnership, horsemanship and playing the long game.

Goofy, who has now covered nearly 3,000km in competition since beginning his endurance career in 2012, arrived in Cornwall feeling full of himself after his Shuckburgh success.

> "He was feeling great, had enough rest and was ready to go out again."

The pair travelled from Powys to tackle the picturesque but challenging 80km course, taking in Boconnoc's beautiful parkland, rolling Cornish countryside and plenty of climbing along the way.

Riding alongside Samantha Mowatt for much of the day, Fiona focused on what matters most โ€“ bringing her horse home happy and healthy.

> "Sam was riding a young horse with a very exciting future ahead of her, while Goofy is getting on a bit, so we both wanted to look after our horses and ride sensibly on some of the more challenging ground."

There was even a heart-stopping moment when Goofy stumbled badly and nearly went down onto his knees. Thankfully, apart from a small cut on his pastern, the veteran campaigner was unfazed and keen to carry on.

After carefully managing their horses throughout the day, the pair agreed to save their competitive instincts for the final stretch.

> "As we came through the last gate, about 500 yards from the finish, Sam shouted 'Ready?' and then 'Go!' and we had a race to the line."

Fiona crossed the line first, but her first thought wasn't the result.

> "I was worried about his cut, so the vet came and checked him straight away. He passed his veterinary inspection and was absolutely fine."

With more than 15,750km of competitive riding under her belt since starting endurance in 2002, Fiona's proudest achievement isn't the trophy.

> "What I'm most proud of is that I can still bring out a 20-year-old horse and be competitive."

A huge thank you to ride organiser Jo, Peter and Rachael Claridge for another fantastic Boconnoc event, and congratulations to Fiona and Goofy on a brilliant victory. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿด

๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ† Southdowns Area Qualifier Results ๐Ÿ†๐ŸŒฟ

The Southdowns Area Qualifier once again delivered fantastic competition, with riders taking on the rolling South Downs countryside in pursuit of qualification places and championship dreams.

Young Rider Leola Hammond continued her outstanding run of form in the 80km GER, guiding Mease Meadows Epimetheus to victory at an impressive 15.7kmph. Even more remarkable was the gelding's recovery, presenting a final pulse of just 46bpm after 80km.

There may have only been one starter in the 64km GER, but it was a performance to remember from Alex Freaks and EB Raphael, who completed at 16kmph and finished with an exceptional final pulse of 44bpm.

The 40km GER went to Justine Brett-Finch and Bellamina Dark Diamond, the Irish Sports Horse continuing to add another endurance success to his record.

With an incredible 45 starters in the 40km Novice GER, competition was fierce, but Linda Jordan and the skewbald Miss Masquerade continued their excellent season to take top honours. Co-ride organiser James Dickinson also earned an impressive third place in the competitive class.

The 32km Novice GER was won by Jo Kulp and Penyffynon Francine, a promising six-year-old Arab x Native mare continuing her endurance education.

In the 25km Novice Foundation GER, victory went to Lisa Peterkin and her Thoroughbred Molly, proving once again that endurance really is a sport for every horse and every rider.

Congratulations to all riders who completed their classes and thank you to the organisers, officials, stewards, vets and volunteers who helped make another successful Southdowns Area Qualifier possible. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿด

๐Ÿฅˆ A one-second finish after 80km!

Huge congratulations to Jenny Newby and Nicsar Diamond Jubilee โ€” known at home as Jasper โ€” who finished 2nd in the 80km CER at Lavenham on Saturday 13th June.

The pair completed the course at an average speed of 16.86kmph, crossing the line just one second behind winners Beth Langley-Pascoe and HS Estella after riding much of the route together.

It was a brilliant result for Jenny and Jasper, who went one better than last year after finishing 3rd in the same class in 2025.

But for Jenny, the placing was never the main aim.

โ€œI feel privileged to have a horse at this level,โ€ she said. โ€œI just wanted to get round with a happy, sound horse to be honest.

โ€œIt is always special to finish an endurance ride with a sound, happy horse that you have spent months training and getting ready for a challenge, no matter what distance. I am very proud of us all to have got round at that speed and he was enjoying himself the whole time.โ€

Jasper is a 14-year-old homebred stallion by Shadwell stallion Madjani and is still owned by his breeders, Sarah and Nicola. He spends his winters at home in Scotland having a complete break before returning to Jenny in March to begin his season.

Despite being a stallion, Jenny says Jasper is โ€œa lovely boy to deal withโ€, living out 24/7 and even enjoying chasing carrots in the field if you throw them!

The weekend did not get off to the smoothest start, with Jasper causing a brief panic by being difficult to catch before leaving for the venue. But once settled at Lavenham, he was ready for the job.

โ€œOnce I was on, he felt great and ready to go,โ€ said Jenny. โ€œI canโ€™t believe how full of it he was and so keen to go out again each loop.โ€

Jenny added that Jasper coped well with the atmosphere of a busy ride venue.

โ€œHe loves riding with others and passing them. He was really focused all day, which was an amazing feeling.โ€

Jenny thanked her husband Tom, who crews for her on his own, alongside Jasperโ€™s wider support team including vets James and Ian from Baker McVeigh, farrier Louis, Cara, Lucy, Maggie and family helping at home.

A fantastic result for a carefully produced partnership. Congratulations Jenny, Jasper and team! ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿด What does โ€œsuitably mountedโ€ actually mean?

Itโ€™s about making sure horse and rider are well matched, with horse welfare at the heart of the partnership.

As a simple guideline, rider + tack should not exceed 20% of the horseโ€™s bodyweight โ€” but this is just one part of the bigger picture. Fitness, condition, conformation, rider balance and the type of work being asked all matter too.

Encouragingly, 96% of Endurance GB riders already fall within this guideline, showing the strong welfare culture within our sport.

Thanks to the support of Baileys Horse Feeds, riders at selected events can access free horse weighing, body condition scoring and expert nutrition advice.

No judgement. No enforcement. Just education, awareness and support to help every horse enjoy the miles ahead.

Ride together. Represent your club. Discover endurance. ๐Ÿด๐ŸŒฟ

The Endurance GB Club Endurance Championships are a fun, friendly and achievable way for riding clubs, Pony Clubs, university riding clubs and other equestrian organisations to experience the adventure of endurance riding.

Whether your members are completely new to endurance or already enjoy long-distance riding, this team championship gives clubs the chance to ride safe, marked routes, support each other through the season and aim for a national final.

With classes starting from 20km, two competition levels and the flexibility to build a team of three to six horse and rider combinations, itโ€™s a brilliant way to get your club involved in one of the most welcoming equestrian sports.

No special tack. No Arab required. Just your horse, your team and a sense of adventure.

Teams can be made up of members from affiliated or non-affiliated riding clubs, Pony Clubs, university clubs, TREC clubs, polo clubs, Long Distance Riding Clubs, Retraining of Racehorses groups and more. Smaller clubs can also join forces, so you donโ€™t need a huge membership base to take part.

There are two levels:

๐ŸŒฟ Level 1: Foundation Novice Graded Rides between 20km and 29km
๐ŸŒฟ Level 2: Novice Graded Rides between 30km and 40km

Teams collect scores throughout the season, appear on the national league table and can qualify for the Championship Final by reaching an accumulated team score of 180 or more.

The 2026 Final will take place at the British Horse Feedsโ€™ Red Dragon Ride at the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells, on Sunday 27th September, with Championship distances of 26km for Level 1 and 34km for Level 2.

Endurance is about partnership, horsemanship, teamwork and enjoying the countryside with your horse. It is the sport that suits everybody and every horse, with welfare at the heart of every ride.

Could your club be part of it?

๐Ÿ‘‰ Visit the Club Endurance Championships page on the Endurance GB website for full details, FAQs, rules, guidance and how to register your team.

Another strong international result for Izaro Anza Benedicto and MK Titanium ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง

Congratulations to Izaro Anza Benedicto and MK Titanium, known at home as Jamjar, who finished 4th in the CEI1* 100km at Lavenham on Saturday 13th June.

The pair completed the course at an average speed of 13.93kmph, securing their second qualification at CEI1* level โ€” another exciting milestone just over two months after winning their first 100km international endurance ride together at Kings Forest.

For Izaro, the result was never just about the placing.

โ€œThe placing is not important really,โ€ said Izaro. โ€œHis improvement in performance, recovery and slightly increasing his speed was what the target was.โ€

Jamjar is a homebred pure Arabian by Murmansk out of Java Sunlight, by Dhruv, and is bred and owned by Sue Broughton and her daughter, Beccy Broughton-Booker.

Sue said: โ€œIzaro always rides within the capabilities of her horses and always rides with care. She has only been competing in endurance for two years but has had the opportunity to compete three horses, so has had a good learning experience.

โ€œShe is an intelligent rider and takes on board all advice from her support team. The objective at Lavenham was to concentrate on balance and to slightly increase the pace without compromising his VG recovery. This was achieved. All the team were very happy!โ€

Following his latest result, Jamjar is now fit enough to be considered for a step up to 120km, although the team will first assess his recovery before deciding on future plans.

Huge congratulations to Izaro, Jamjar, Sue, Beccy and the whole team on another brilliant result. ๐Ÿ‘

๐ŸŒฟ July is looking like a brilliant month for competitive endurance riding!

From championship qualifiers to open moorland, FEI competition to big-view challenges, there is plenty coming up for those ready to get out, explore and put their training to the test.

First up, Cirencester hosts our final Area Qualifier of the season alongside the much-loved Inter-Regional Championships from 10โ€“12th July. Based in Cirencester Park, this major ride offers beautiful going over byways and private tracks, with very little roadwork and a real championship atmosphere.

The same weekend, The White Horse Ride heads to a new venue at Low Osgoodby Grange, with tracks and quiet country roads through the countryside between Kilburn and Easingwold, all with wonderful views of The White Horse.

On 18โ€“19th July, Thetford Endurance brings FEI competition to the calendar, using the new venue for the Euston Park rides and routes over private estate land.

For those who love a proper countryside challenge, July also brings three fantastic rides with plenty of atmosphere and adventure. The Quantocks Ride offers hacking round the headlands, woods and moorland, while War of the Roses returns to the edge of Nidderdale with grassy headlands, shooting tracks, bridleways, green lanes and those incredible views. Then Elephant Rock takes riders onto Bodmin Moor, with tracks, woods, open moorland, water crossings and views in abundance.

And of course, while July has some real competitive highlights, donโ€™t forget that Endurance GB has many more non-competitive rides taking place every single weekend throughout the year too. Whether you are building confidence, bringing on a young horse, enjoying a pleasure ride with friends or aiming for your next competitive milestone, there is a place for you and your horse.

Find your next ride and get your entries in via the Endurance GB website.

๐ŸŒŸ From first competitive start to 80km CER winner ๐ŸŒŸ

Huge congratulations to Beth Langley-Pascoe and HS Estella, known at home as Estrid, winners of the 80km CER at Lavenham on Saturday 13th June.

The pair completed the course at an average speed of 16.86kmph, crossing the line just one second ahead of Jenny Newby and Nicsar Diamond Jubilee after the two combinations had ridden the full 80km together.

For Beth, who has represented Great Britain during a long and successful endurance career, this was a particularly special result. Not only was it Bethโ€™s first race since 2018, it was also Estridโ€™s first ever competitive endurance ride.

Beth has owned the 10-year-old mare for five years, having bought her from the same stud as Tissy, her previous team horse.

โ€œEstrid is very sensitive, easily overwhelmed and wears her heart on her sleeve,โ€ said Beth. โ€œSheโ€™s taken longer to get to where she is than most horses, but when you put a saddle on sheโ€™s good as gold and an absolute pleasure to ride.โ€

Beth chose Lavenham carefully, knowing the well-run venue, clear marking and busy vet gate environment would suit Estrid and help give her a positive first experience.

โ€œThe main goal is always positive experience first, competitive edge second, no matter what,โ€ said Beth. โ€œI always try to just ride my own ride plan and if that gets me a good placing, great. If it doesnโ€™t, Iโ€™ve ridden in a way thatโ€™s best for my horse and the conditions on the day.โ€

Beth and Jenny discussed the finish around 7km from home and decided that, with a downhill slope towards a road, a flat-out race was not the right choice for horses with bigger long-term goals.

โ€œOur goals for our horses are so much bigger than one placing in one race, so we decided to cross the line together,โ€ Beth explained.

Estrid led for almost the entire 80km โ€” a huge achievement for a mare who has not always been confident with horses behind her.

โ€œShe felt really strong and enthusiastic,โ€ said Beth. โ€œI was really proud of her attitude. I think she was mentally a little tired towards the end but physically she had gas in the tank!โ€

The icing on the cake? Estrid was also awarded Best Condition. ๐Ÿ†
