245 For Your Adventures runs introduction to paddlesports sessions at our private lake/river venue in the heart of the Lake District on Wednesday evenings and Thursday mornings through the Summer. This is a service predominantly for the lodgers of the 245FYA furnished holiday apartments, but members of the public are welcome where space is available. Open boat, slalom kayak, freestyle kayak, river runner kayak and SUP will be available to try, and coaching is provided. Where competence and confidence is attained, our river can then be explored using your craft of choice.
Rescue, self rescue and paddling techniques will be demonstrated and taught. The cost is just £12 per hour(minimum 3 hours). This is the ideal environment to learn your kayak roll, to get to grips with SUP control or to effectively/efficiently navigate an open boat solo. The group maximum is 5 persons.

One-on-one sessions can be arranged.

These sessions are relaxed and fun, and learning is to the pace of the individual.

Private/secure parking is provided, and facilities for changing and toilet use are on site.

All equipment is provided.

Private message to register to your interest.

Brathay pool is a put-in for an amazing section of river starting at Skelwith Bridge and running to lake Windermere. Paddling upstream from the location gives the beginner the opportunity to feel how his/her craft acts with water moving against it. The flow is gentle but the river narrows to just wider than an open boat or SUP causing an increase in speed. The top of this section is just below Skelwith where the slot spills into an opening to create an eddy aided feature perfect for learning ferry gliding skills and break ins/break outs. Paddling downstream of the access point is an excellent first whitewater experience for both solo open boat whitewater and whitewater kayak.
This watercourse cuts through some beautiful hidden countryside with the Langdales in view.

The land either side of the river is mostly private. Public access is further hindered by being so far from footpaths and roads. The hard standing is now in and the secure gate allows worry free parking for our customers. The jetty has just been completed and installed. This deals with the once ‘sloppy access and egress’.

Parking and access were always the two problems with this river. We are super happy with the trial sessions, and this venue will service our small group intro courses for SUP and open boat in the Summer and one-on-one whitewater sessions for open boat and kayak in the Winter months.

2021 has been hindered with a torn right bicep and damage to the shoulder. Sadly, much of the paddlesport sessions had to be cancelled. I’m taking things slowly in the gym, and I’m doing little-and-often sessions in my Slalom boat. I’m dealing with the finishing touches to the venue. I’ve managed to provide for a few people at this location already...and the results were excellent.
The coming Winter and the Summer of 2022 will see much of our activity shift to this new location, especially for one on one training.

You may know that there really isn’t a need to travel so far into the Lake District for paddlesport training. We have so much on the doorstep to Kendal and Penrith. Of course, the beauty and tranquility (and the cleanliness of the water) is a compromise. Parking and river access can be the issues in Central Lakes. Problems solved.

The new Penrith (North Lakes) apartment was completed a week ago, and it is now available to our paddlesports customers and as a holiday rental for Lake District visitors. The rental comes complete with two SUPs and two mountain bikes. Additional SUPs and mountain bikes can be arranged for larger groups reserving both apartments.
There are some excellent mountain bike rides out of Penrith...and there are some excellent locations on The River Eamont, Lowther and Eden to explore and to develop SUP skills.
For introductory kayak and solo whitewater canoe training in North Lakes with 245 For Your Adventures there are some really good park-and-play river sections on The Eden and Eamont.
The old market town boasts the convenience of supermarkets, restaurants and bars, and it has The Lake District National Park on its doorstep; Ullswater lake is just a short drive or bus ride away.

I decided to not travel out to France this year because of all that is going on with Covid. I was super ready for some ‘me time’ at L’Argentierre and St. Clements slalom courses, and the Briançon apartment could have done with a little attention before the start of another Summer season. Instead, I stuck around to get the new place completed.

The demand for kayak and canoe sessions has been extremely high with record numbers of visitors to The Lake District...but I’ve had to focus on finishing the new apartment.
Kayak and open boat training will start in July as normal, but I’ll not be providing group tours on any of the Lakes this Summer; I’m taking a break from fighting with traffic and having to deal with expensive National Trust parking. Instead, I’ll be focusing on small group training on river sections in and around the Kendal area (Mint,Sprint and Kent) and the Penrith area (Eamont, Eden and Lowther). I look forward to a super busy and productive Summer with all 245 FYA customers.
