🤝 Coach & Referee Collaboration — Making a Difference Together
Last season, feedback from coaches in Mini Soccer showed us just how thrilled clubs were to have referees supporting their games.
Three seasons ago, the Kent Valley League wasn’t able to cover every Sunday fixture. Tomorrow, as we head into our opening weekend, EVERY SINGLE GAME from Under 8s through to Under 15s has a referee appointed. 👏 100% Coverage!
As always, we welcome feedback from coaches, and the constructive feedback we’ve received has been fantastic. One clear example came from Mini Soccer, where coaches asked the Development Team whether we could better support kick-ins, dribble-ins and restarts.
So, we did THREE things:
⚽ 1. Pre-season referee meeting
All referees supporting these games came together to look at the new Laws of the Game around restarts, with a focus on referees being proactive, communicating clearly and encouraging the ball to be back in play quickly from throw-ins.
⚽ 2. A new referee course drill
We designed a new practice focused on the social side of the Referee DNA — encouraging referees to communicate with players about the restart, ensure players are correctly positioned and help the ball return in the correct way and in good time.
🎥 3. A video for match officials
We’ve created a video to share with all match officials ahead of the season, reinforcing the approach and supporting consistency across our games.
A huge thank you to Ali Wilson, Abi Greenwood & Will Owen for their support in developing and delivering this new drill and practice.
And finally, this season starts with a 200%+ increase in referees. 🚀
Over the coming weeks, you’ll see officials taking charge of their first games, learning new skills and beginning a new pathway in football.
Please encourage them. Show understanding. Support their development.
And if you have feedback, please offer it through your club, using the correct channels so that it can be acted upon constructively.
Here’s to a successful 2026/27 season for our clubs, coaches, volunteers, players, parents, carers, guardians and match officials.
We’re all part of the same game. 🤝⚽
