AHC V WIGTON
We had two fixtures this weekend against very strong opposition, beginning with a match against Wigton 2s. With Wigton sitting fourth in the league, we knew this would be a challenging encounter. We were also missing some experienced players, but approached the game as a valuable opportunity for development.
In the first half, we worked hard to contain Wigton despite our relative inexperience. The team showed great determination to press high and play aggressively, making it difficult for the visitors. There were particularly strong defensive performances from Emma, Sophie, Heidi, and Amber, alongside some excellent goalkeeping from Amelie. Despite these efforts, we conceded four goals, including a penalty flick.
There were, however, plenty of positives to take from the first half. We came out strongly after the break, with the midfield; Lily, Annabelle, Lauren, Ella, Emma, and Roxy working tirelessly to move the ball forward and create attacking opportunities. Up front, Gabbi, Penny, and Janette made intelligent runs and worked hard to find space.
Our breakthrough came when Emma M, playing on the right wing, drove into the circle and struck a well taken shot from just inside the D, finding the back of the net. It was a thoroughly deserved goal, reflecting the team’s hard work and persistence.
Wigton added a further goal in the second half despite our continued efforts to keep them out. They were a well-drilled side who pushed us throughout, but we showed real courage and determination to compete and make it a difficult game for them.
The match finished 5–1 to Wigton.
AHC V KS2
Our second fixture of the weekend saw us take on Kirkby Stephen 2s, who currently sit second in the league. Having played the previous day, we went into the game feeling the effects of fatigue, with several players having completed the full 70 minutes. As in the first match, we fielded a relatively inexperienced side, but approached the game with determination and a positive attitude.
Despite our best efforts, Kirkby Stephen demonstrated their quality in the first half, scoring three well-worked goals through organised and skilful hockey. Nevertheless, we remained upbeat at the break, encouraged by our performance and the effort shown across the pitch.
There were some excellent defensive displays, particularly from Sophie and Heidi, who worked tirelessly at the back. Throughout the match, the team showed great resilience, pressing hard and making it difficult for the opposition.
Kirkby Stephen came out strongly in the second half and added a further three goals, one of which came from a penalty flick. Despite the scoreline, we continued to battle and showed real character against a very strong side.
The game finished 6–0. There were many positives to take from both fixtures this weekend, with every player giving 100% and making it challenging for two tough visiting teams. The squad showed great courage and determination throughout.
A special mention goes to Ella, who played her first two games against very strong opposition and smashed it!
