The Sanguisorba are one of the many late summer highlights for me in the garden and amongst this broad ranging genus is one I use every year in the planted containers, a gorgeous variety called ‘Little Tanna’ it’s gentle, airy quality pairs with so many different plants and it is also excellent in the border where good light and drainage are on hand 🌱

Dahlia ‘Autumn Orange’ has taken on a delightful untidiness to herald in the late Summer early Autumn vibes and I do like it against the red of our tin shed. Although as I’ve concluded on several occasions Red seems to make almost anything look rather fine….

A rather fine Rudbekia to enjoy in all its slender finery; Rudbekia grandiflora ‘Sundance’
Fully hardy with us in Cumbria but needs a good sunny site and well drained soil. And yes I’m smitten with it……

We started using Dahlias extensively in our pot displays about 5 years ago and I can’t imagine a time when we weren’t using them. They add so much colour and depth to the simplest or most extravagant of garden spaces.
We pot the individual tubers in early Spring into peat free multipurpose compost and sit the pots on benching in our smaller polytunnel. When they’re established/large enough we plant them out into all sorts of pots and containers with any spare plants shoe horned into the borders.

A fab late flowering hardy perennial for where you want height, elegance and something not too dominant of space. The New York ironweed or Vernonia noveboracensis is topped with richly coloured purple flowers that float at the top of richly coloured stocky stems.

A late May sowing of Cosmos from the master of all things Cosmos Jonathan Sheppard that Abi purchased at Chelsea this year.
We couldn’t get over how fast they germinated and motored on meaning we now have the most beautiful late Summer early Autumn pot display for the garden. To be repeated next season….Particularly in love with the contrasting colour of the neighbouring Rodgersia setting off the light airy feel of varieties including ‘Colletta Pink White’ & ‘Apricotta’

At the end of August we escaped to one of our favourite Scottish gardens, Logan Botanic Garden which is a satellite garden for the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. It feels more Cornwall than Scotland as Tree Ferns, Aeonium and Agaves spend all year outside and they can because Logan’s microclimate is influenced by the Gulf Stream and allows their extraordinary plant collections to thrive. A highlight was seeing Dierama ‘Logan Ballerina’ in full flower, I was smitten….brilliant work all round by the gardeners.

A special perennial for me and one that I look forward to every season. The outrageously lofty stems of Rudbekia laciniata ‘Herbstonne’ can easily get to 2m or more. We talk about the movement in certain plants with grasses often held up as the ones to achieve this (and rightly so) but plants like this Rudbekia have a gorgeous soft movement with the flower heads seemingly floating in the air. Come October the petals will have fallen but the remaining seed heads form dark blobs for want of a better word that dance around for a good few weeks and that in itself oozes its own charm.

I love luxury in a bin and right now this simple combination is reaching its peak before the realities of early Autumn force a hasty retreat to the greenhouse for the Canna. Alongside the Canna, jostling for space is Verbena ‘Lollipop’ and Erigeron karvinskianus.
