Today, we've had a second fun day out in the mountains with our lovely group from

The temperature here in The Lakes has climbed a bit but its been nowhere near as hot as we expected, in fact, up on the fells we've enjoyed a nice breeze which helped make the day most pleasant 😎

We navigated from point to point using all the skills learnt yesterday as well as learning some new ones which included.

Switching between map scales to aid identification βœ…οΈ
Using the compass to confirm the identity of an unknown feature from a known location βœ…οΈ
Back bearings βœ…οΈ
Pinpointing landscape features to aid walking on a bearing βœ…οΈ
Naismiths Rule βœ…οΈ
Route selection βœ…οΈ

Our route took us up on to the higher fells and eventually we reached the summit of Shipman Knotts, so some of our group got to "bag" a Wainwright of which there are 214 in the area ⛰️

After enjoying great views across Kentmere and south Lakes, we descended back to the cars whereupon the girls headed off to the pools & waterfalls at the head of the valley for a refreshing swim πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈ

We do hope they've had a great time πŸ‘Œ

Today we've been out having Ghyll Scrambling fun with a Hen Party πŸ˜€ We've been back in Stickle Ghyll in Great Langdale where we have been assisting .journeys with their staffing requirements.

Thanks for the work Mark 😊

We assisting in taking this group up the lower part of Stickle Ghyll where they had the opportunity to get as wet as they wanted. The water level was very low - probably as low as we have ever seen it in early May but there was enough water for everyone to have fun jumping into pools and climbing & scrambling upstream. It was also warm enough for everyone to comfortably enjoy immersion in the water 🀘

The session lasted about 2 & 1/2 hours and everyone had a great time 😊

It's that Ghyll Scrambling/ Gorge Walking time of year folks and this exhilarating & fun activity should be on everyone's bucket list πŸ‘Œ

Ghyll Scrambling is great fun for Stag & Hen Groups, families and friends. Get in touch to book your Ghyll Scrambling Session now - you won't be disappointed πŸ‘

Iain has enjoyed a great Bank Holiday Sunday today with Sophie, and Nina who have all been visiting the area over the weekend and who were all keen to climb one of The Lake District's 3000 foot mountains.

Helvellyn, at 3118 feet, is the 3rd highest of the four 3000ers in the area and it is one of the most popular mountains with fell-walkers and people looking for a bit more excitement than your average hill-walk πŸ˜‰

The excitement comes from including a traverse of Striding & Swirral Edges - two narrow & challenging ridges which enclose Red Tarn; a small lake which drains to the east, ultimately entering Ullswater near to the village of Glenridding.

We met near Glenridding this morning and set off up the path that heads for "Hole in the wall" at the eastern end of Striding Edge. From this point on, we were in cloud across Striding Edge, at the summit of Helvellyn, during our descent of Swirral Edge, our ascent of Catstycam and at our crossing of a very low Red Tarn Beck as it leaves the tarn.

Indeed, we didn't get out of the cloud until about 200m below Hole in the wall on our descent back to the valley floor, but at least the day had remained unexpectedly dry, so that was a bonus πŸ˜€

Sophie, Claire & Nina enjoyed their guided walking day with Iain who hopes he will see them all again for further adventures in the mountains in the future 🀞🀞

A big thanks to .journeys for the referral 😊

Well, its a few days since we were last out working. Thursday to be precise; and it was Nick, Karin & Joelle's second day out with Iain πŸ˜€

Thursday was meant to be a Rock Climbing Skills Training Day or Scrambling if climbing was not really possible. We really needed a warm, dry, calm day and in the event, it was none of those things.

The day dawned damp, with showers and a strong and cold south westerly wind. Climbing or Scrambling were off the cards so we went up into the Kentmere Valley for some further Navigation Skills Training.

We walked into the upper Kentmere Valley from near to Brockstones and took the bridleway towards Nan Bield Pass diverting from this to visit the massive Ull Stone - a whopping erratic moved by glacial ice thousands of years ago.

The next point we went to look for was Greengrove Fold in the Lingmell Valley below Nan Bield Pass. En route, we were entertained by a Mountain Rescue Helicopter which appeared to be on exercise as it lowered a chap to the ground whilst hovering overhead. Eventually, he was winched back up and away it went.

At everyone's request, we started our journey back by firstly visiting Kentmere Reservoir. We then walked back along the eastern side of the valley through farmland with sheep & lambs all around on our way back to the car.

Skills further covered on this day

Measuring distance on the map and pacing it on the ground βœ…οΈ
Interpretation of map informationβœ…οΈ
Finding Grid references through the use of pacing and walking on a bearingβœ…οΈ
Keeping moving to stay warm πŸ˜†

Nick, Karin and Joelle enjoyed their second day out with Iain who thanks them for the work and hopes to see them all again soon 😊

Navigation Skills Training from Longsleddale today for Nick, Karin and Joelle who are all visiting The Lake District this week.

Nick & Karin are long standing clients who return to do something with us every few years. Joelle - Nick's sister, is here to do some activities for the very first time 😊

Today was a Navigation refresher for all three. The weather was dry until 1pm as forecast; then after that, we had some proper challenging wet Navigation weather 😬🌧🌧

However, the three performed well, as we navigated from point to point using grid references to find locations; and then measuring & pacing distance and using bearings to walk over seemingly featureless terrain to successfully find all points.

Skills covered

Map scales & symbols βœ…οΈ
Orientation of the map βœ…οΈ
Measuring distance on the map and pacing it on the ground βœ…οΈ
Tick off features βœ…οΈ
Grid references βœ…οΈ

Well done team for a successful Skills Training Day πŸ‘πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜Ž
