🧗‍♂️ Many climbers focus on getting stronger or climbing harder as they prepare for that perfect day at the crag… but would you know what to do if a day doesn’t go perfectly?

A stuck rope.
A stuck partner.
A problem you didn’t expect…

You don’t need to learn lots of complex rescue techniques. But knowing how to look after yourself and your partner when things get interesting will give you the confidence to tackle more adventurous routes - whether you are just starting your trad journey or have been climbing for years.

Self rescue isn’t just for superheroes, it’s part of becoming an independent climber.

👉 Want to feel more confident on your next big day out? Check out our upcoming self-rescue skills day on Saturday 26th September. See link in bio.

1..2..3.. great days out with clients over the past few weeks!

Last Saturday I got the excuse to climb one of my favourite scrambles in the Lake District - Pinnacle Ridge on St Sunday Crag

This had been on Stephen’s bucket list for a while, and it was a delight to share this wonderful mountaineering route with him

The walk-in is worth every step (I promise) - the higher you get, the better the rock and the view (hopefully), with a wonderful pinnacle-y finale to test your head for heights

Birthday treat - Nayeli got in touch to request ‘an epic multipitch route in the mountains’ for Graham’s birthday celebrations 🎉

A route on Pillar was top of the list… I hit refresh on the weather forecast as we approached the designated day and was psyched to see that we would get a weather window ☀️

My first time guiding a rock route on Pillar, we had perfect conditions for ‘New West Route’ 😎

Multipitch routes in the mountains can seem like an intimidating step up if you have been cutting your teeth on single pitch crags in the valley… get in touch if you’d like to make the step up and unlock a whole new world of adventure

…or if you’ve already made the step to multipitch, but are keen to expand your skill set to stay safe in these bigger adventures, then get in touch to find out about my ‘self rescue’ skills days - next one coming up on 26 September

Sunshine and showers was on the menu for last week’s skills day with Paul 🌦️

First time on rock, he cruised all the climbing - even in the rain - and nailed the key skills needed to become an independent trad climber

✅ placing gear
✅ building belays
✅ multipitch ‘tradmin’
✅ staying safe when abseiling

Supporting people to start their own journey into the world of trad climbing and mountaineering is the most rewarding part of my job. I look forward to heading about Paul’s future adventures… and the adventures of everyone who I have shared the crag with over the summer 🧗

Family day out - nine people, three dogs, plus lots of cake and laughter. Lovely to hang out with the Middleton/Hodgson clan last week on their summer trip to the Lake District

This lovely little crag in north Cumbria is perfect for first steps on rock. Maybe the sun will return in autumn half term and you fancy a family adventure?

Grand day out - thank you Elliott for seeking me out to guide you on a day of scrambling and easy climbing during your recent trip to the Lake District!

We headed up some of the wonderful Langdale rock on Middlefell Buttress and Harrison Stickle… and then down Jack’s Rake!

It has been lovely to introduce a whole host of people to craggy adventures in the Lake District this summer ⛰️

High five - Helena and Will have done a bunch of outdoor climbing, but always following others up routes. They booked a weekend with me to get leading, and ‘build trust in the gear, and each other’ 🙂

On Saturday we headed up a chilled multi-pitch route to build skills:
✅ belaying a leader and second
✅ using two ropes
✅ placing and removing gear
✅ testing gear (eek! with a safety rope)
✅ building belays
✅ staying safe on a multi-pitch route
✅ abseiling

Sunday saw us head to Long Scar where we climbed one route 5 times!!

As Will and Helena got familiar with the route, we gradually removed the safety nets until both were confidently leading, seeking out their own sequence of moves - and resting positions - and identifying their own gear placements

As is common for many people, they both found the actual experience of leading to be a really calm, engaging process

Lovely to see two more young people building their experience and confidence in the wonderful world of trad climbing 🧗

Sibling trust - dad Jake booked a day of rock climbing for Isabel and Sam during their summer holiday, then was persuaded to join in for himself 🧗

Lots of ‘firsts’:
➡️ climbing on rock
➡️ belaying your brother/sister
➡️ trusting your sister/brother to belay you!
➡️ abseiling

Despite roasting temperatures, psych was high throughout the day. As I upped the grade, everyone upped their skills, with all three battling to the top of all the routes! Well done team 🙌

Trad or sport? - Louise and Andrea are heading to Europe for some sport climbing next month and asked me to deliver a skills day to help them prepare for their trip

They carelessly mentioned they didn’t mind visiting a trad crag 😁, so we headed up to sunny Long Scar and turned it into a sport crag for the day! Don’t worry, no bolts in sight… we picked some classic routes with bomber gear, which I pre-placed for them, and they cracked on with scampering up them in style.

Relative newcomers to climbing, it was fantastic to see them work so well as a team - it really does make a difference if you have your favourite belayer holding your rope - and there were grins all round as Louise led her first outdoor route, meaning that Andrea doesn’t have to do all the leading now 😀

Get in touch if you would like to build your skills or check in for a climbing MOT before you head off for your own adventures

Coming up… my next ‘self rescue’ skills day - aka ‘how to avoid getting in a tangle’ - is coming up on Saturday 26 September

Aimed at anyone with a basic understanding of trad climbing who would like a few extra skills in their back pocket when they next head out cragging 🧗

…or are looking to step up to adventures on multi-pitch crags, sea cliffs, or in the mountains! 🌊⛰️

Not just for hard climbers!! Experience of leading or seconding VDiff is sufficient 😀

2 places still available. See link in bio for further information and details of how to book.

Rescue me! - it’s impossible to convey how much fun we had on the most recent of our trad intro days for the Kendal Wall women+ group

We hung around in the sun - literally - finessing skills to avoid getting into a pickle when trad climbing, or extract ourselves if we do

Ridiculous amounts of enthusiasm were throw into learning how to:

✅tie off the rope
✅ use prusiks
✅ lower people safely
✅ abseil
✅ and deploy various tricks and tactics help your second get up the route!

I’ll be running another of these popular days in September, but get in touch before then if you’d like to book a bespoke day to brush up on skills to keep you safe on summer adventures!

Thank you to Kendal Wall for subsiding this summer’s outdoor climbing workshops for women+ 🙏
