CLOSE MATCH ENDS THE 2024 ADVANTAGE SEASON
Sunday 1st September saw the final Advantage handicap match of the season being played. Westmorland welcomed Fylde Falcons to the lawns.
The day managed to stay dry until half an hour after we left Levens Hall. Once again many matches were close and at lunch time it was 5 games all.
After lunch we played 4 more and were still level at 7 all. So all was to play for in the last 4 matches. The Falcons stepped up their game and won 3 of the last 4, making the final score Westmorland 8 Fylde Falcons 10.
Well done everyone. Many very close games once again.

SHORT LAWN LEAGUE TEAM SUFFERS SETBACK AT BURY
It was a pleasantly warm and sunny late summer's day for the Westmorland Team's penultimate match of the Short Lawn season on Friday 6th September. Bury hosted the match at their Coronation Park site, and the tall trees surrounding the lawn provided very welcome shelter from the blustery wind. It was something of a tale of defeat snatched from the sweet taste of victory, as early good fortune was overturned in the final round of games.
Mike Hodgson captained a team also comprising Roger Brooks, Rob Harvey and Norman Winter. The Westmorland team started strongly, taking a 3-1 lead in the first set of matches, and holding the lead at 5-3 at lunchtime.
Unfortunately the afternoon did not go so well, the lead evaporating as Bury drew level again leaving the final round beginning with the teams level at 6-6. With only one Westmorland win in the final round, the match was lost by a narrow margin. Bury 9, Westmorland 7.Despite the defeat, Westmorland is still at the top of the Short Lawn table with 4 wins and 2 drawn matches, level with Bowdon Bullets, who also have one further match to play. Westmorland's team is still in contention to be the outright league winner. but any of four teams could still win outright, or share first place. Westmorland's final match is against Southport on Saturday 14th September.

Our club competition was meant to be an under 7 handicap competition, but only 3 members entered so it was opened up to anyone who could not play in the previous 7+ handicap competition.
It was agreed to have an all play competition. So with 7 entries the games got underway. The Winner would be decided on how many hoops were won on the day over the 6 games each played,
With the scores being very close, David Massey and Sue Pritchard gained joint 2nd place with 38 points each. Fiona Armer was the winner with 39 points. 👏👏👏

Westmorland Croquet Club Vs Southport Croquet Club
Thursday 1st August saw a wet start to the morning as the team from Westmorland welcomed Southport to the lawns at Levens Hall. However, as play got underway the sun started to shine so waterproofs and jumpers were discarded!.
Once again Westmorland put up a good fight with a combined handicap of 25 against 13 and several matches going to the golden hoop, but Southport raced ahead and the final score was Westmorland 4, Southport 14.
Well done to both teams.

SHORT LAWN DAY EVENT SEES PHIL WIN AGAIN
Phil Hyman completed a notable Day Event Double when he came out top in the Short Lawn Day Event held on Wednesday June 26th. The previous week he had headed the scoreboard at the Full Lawn AC Day Event.
We had six participants for the Short Lawn Day, which meant that with match times shortened to 75 minutes from the usual 90 minutes we could run an all-play-all block tournament. Roger Brooks and Phil Hyman both won 4 of their 5 matches with Phil out in front on hoop difference, with an average 5 hoop lead over his opponents across the day.
Participants pictured: Roger Brooks, Rob Harvey, Mike Hodgson, Sure Pritchard, Phil Hyman, and Norman Winter.
