Bletchley Rugby Club v Kempston RFC 28/3
After a 2-week break from K’s last game, it was time to get back on the road again, this time the short hop across the M1 to our friends at Bletchley, in the (silver) Merit League semi-final.
K’s seem to raise their game when it comes to the knockout stages, and today was no different. Keen to dispel the notion that Kempston are slow starters, they were out of their blocks fast, and met fire with fire. Nine minutes in, K’s worked the ball up the field and dotted down, ably converted to make it 0-7.
It took another converted try from Kempston for Bletchley to find a way through against the passage of play, and score under the Ks posts, but swirling winds made the conversion difficult, and the score went to 5-14.
A few Kempston communication errors and positional forgetfulness gave Bletchley the advantage and they didn’t need much more invitation to score, this time converting, to bring the score to 12-14.
After a few probing runs and strong defensive efforts, Kempston scored once more to seal the first half, missing the conversion but making it 12-19.
Half-time saw both sides share urgent messages – Bletchley to stick at it, Kempston to push home the advantage with the final beckoning.
The second half started chaotically, with Bletchley taking the advantage to level the scores at 19-19. Some on the Ks side wondered if this was going to herald the beginnings of a defeat snatched from the jaws of victory, but how wrong they were.
Ks scored again on the stroke of the 50 minute mark to make it 19-26 – ten whole minutes passed before the next score, this time from Bletchley with another unconverted try to make it 24-26, their kicking boots seemingly left in the changing room. K’s were getting into their stride, bossing the game and taking advantage of Bletchley’s uncharacteristic lack of discipline at the breakdown, and were almost starting to score tries for fun.
3 Kempston tries followed, 2 converted, to bring the final score to Bletchley 24 – 45 Kempston. A worthy win from a total team effort across the entire squad, who knew if they took their eye off things, Bletchley would punish them.
And, of course, now we can look to the final, on 4th April, against St Neots at their ground – we know them well but also know they can catch us out, and will have home advantage. It promises to be a cracker.
K’s Scorers:
Alfie x3
Wordy x2
Darlow x1
Jordan x1
Kicking duties were shared between John Higginson and Chris Mayhew.
Man of the Match – John Gribbon (fullback) – for a top-draw defensive effort, getting everywhere but not forgetting the number on his shirt.
Do**us of the day – Steve Dalton (scrum half), for kicking the ball on the floor 4 times rather than picking it up or dropping on it.
