Black Belt Tournament
Massive congratulations to our instructor on his medal haul at black belt tournament on Friday. With black belts competing on a Friday this was the first time I had attended but when we heard that PSBN (as he was then) Bert was competing a few of us decided to come along and see what’s what!! It was a fantastic afternoon, seeing K*k Sool friends and catching up, watching the awesome competitors and seeing the skill on show was definitely inspirational. Big thanks to K*k Sool Won of Bathgate and Livingston Martial Arts for hosting ♥️

YOU – WON – HWA (유원화)

The Foundational Theory of K*k Sool Won

YOU-WON–HWA is not just a concept. It is the operating system of K*k Sool Won. Every technique, every form, every lock, throw, strike and breath pattern reflects these three principles.

🌊 YOU (유) – Flowing Like Water

YOU means flow.
Water does not resist unnecessarily. It adapts.
* When pushed - it yields, then returns.
* When pulled - it follows, then redirects.
* When blocked - it finds another path.

Water symbolises:
* Adaptability
* Softness
* Relentless force

In K*k Sool, this becomes practical:
* When pushed, we pull.
* When pulled, we push.
* We never meet force with rigid force.
* We absorb, redirect, and return energy.

Water can be gentle, yet it shapes mountains.

⭕ WON (원) – The Circle

WON means circle.
Every person has a circle — a private space.
When that circle is invaded, we respond with circular motion.

The circle represents:
* Least resistance
* Continuous motion
* No beginning, no end
* No corners to trap

In application:
* Locks spiral.
* Throws rotate.
* Footwork arcs.
* Strikes travel on curved lines.

A rolling circle is difficult to grasp. A rigid object can be seized. A moving circle cannot.

☯️ HWA (화) – Harmony

HWA means harmony.
This is the unity of:
* Mind and body
* Technique and intention
* Internal and external

Harmony is cultivated through repetition.
Not mindless repetition — but conscious practice until there is no separation between thought and action.

HWA recognises:
* Positive (+) and Negative (–)
* Yang and Um
* Hard and Soft
* Push and Pull

Each exists because of the other.
True harmony is not passive. It is balance in motion.

The Ramification of YOU–WON–HWA

Flowing water constantly seeks equilibrium with its environment.
So must we.

When someone introduces force into our circle:
* We do not oppose it directly.
* We do not panic.
* We redirect it in direct proportion to what is given.

The greater the force, the greater the return.
This is not aggression. It is natural law.

In Practical K*k Sool Terms
YOU – Adapt to the opponent. WON – Move in circles, not lines. HWA – Remain internally balanced.

When these three principles are understood:
* Techniques stop feeling like separate moves.
* Forms stop feeling like memorisation.
* Sparring stops feeling chaotic.
* Training becomes unified.

YOU–WON–HWA is not something we add to technique.
It is what makes technique work.
