Head into the weekend with some real honest insight from Alexis Sikorsky on what it takes to overcome some massive failures and go on to scale, sell and exit a business with an impressive $100M+ Exit! ... and what transition post sale really feels like.

NEW PODCAST RELEASE with the king of 'Cashing Out' 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝗶𝗸𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗸𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 $𝟭𝟬𝟬𝗠+ 𝗘𝘅𝗶𝘁

If you step away… does your business still work?
That’s the question Alexis Sikorsky puts to every CEO.
(full podcast link at the end of this post)

Because from a private equity perspective, value isn’t just about revenue or growth - It’s about whether the business is built to operate without you.

In this clip from the Balancing Act – Mastering Work, Wealth and Wellbeing Podcast 🎙️ Alexis shares why stepping away is one of the clearest indicators of a scalable, investable company.

We also touch on something he frames in a way that really stays with you…
the “𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀” 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝘁 - or as he puts it, “not very successful” moments.

There’s no over complication in how he explains it.
Just a clear view: those moments are part of the process, not something to avoid.

In the full episode, we go further into:
– building and scaling a business over two decades
– leading through pressure, uncertainty, and financial challenges
– preparing for exit beyond just the numbers
– and what happens when the deal is done

A useful reflection if you’re building something of real value:
Are you creating a business that depends on you… or one that can stand without you?

In this episode, Dr Lynda Shaw, cognitive neuroscientist and business psychologist, explores the science behind emotion, behaviour and leadership. Including:
• Why emotional intelligence is rooted in brain function, not just behaviour
• The connection between self-awareness and effective leadership
• Understanding emotional triggers and how to respond to them
• How experience shapes helpful and unhelpful emotional patterns
• The role of communication in building trust and connection
• Cultural differences in how emotion is expressed and interpreted
• Why leaders set the emotional tone within teams

When leaders understand how emotion is working beneath the surface, they are better equipped to respond with clarity, build stronger relationships and lead with intention.

Lynda brings a rare combination of scientific rigour and practical application, translating complex neuroscience into insight that leaders can use in real-world environments.

Are you comfortable knowing 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲... 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀?

It’s a point many business owners will resonate with - the weight of carrying that reality, all the time.

It’s part of the conversation I had with entrepreneur and former Dragons' Den investor 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗵 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗵𝗮𝗺 in Episode 6 of the Balancing Act - Mastering Work, Wealth and Wellbeing podcast.

In this clip, Sarah shares a perspective that every founder and leader understands at some level but rarely says out loud:

𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹.

And the difference often comes down to:

Good judgement.
Timing.
Clarity of direction.
And the courage to make decisions when the outcome is uncertain.

Across the conversation, we explore what it really means to design success - not just through business growth, but through choices that shape work, wealth and life.

Sarah reflects on her journey from building and exiting businesses to investing in new ventures, and why the framework of 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁, 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁 became central to how she defined success and long-term freedom.

In this episode we discuss:

• Why success should be designed around life, not just business
• The reality that entrepreneurs are often only a few decisions away from major outcomes
• How financial freedom creates choice and autonomy
• The importance of timing, strategy and clear thinking in building companies
• Balancing entrepreneurship with relationships and family life

It’s an honest conversation about entrepreneurship, decision-making, and the realities behind building and scaling businesses.

In this episode I’m joined by 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗻 clinical sport psychologist, sport scientist and creator of the PROCESS Model, to explore the science behind sustainable performance.

With 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁, 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, John previously served as Director of Sports Science and Clinical Care for the New England Patriots and has advised organisations including NASA and United States Special Operations Command on resilience and decision-making under pressure.

This week’s conversation features Anne-Sophie Amiot, Vice President of Sales & Strategy at Wood PLC, a global engineering consultancy.

Anne-Sophie brings a fascinating perspective on leadership shaped by both 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. With a background in chemistry and engineering, she has moved from technical roles into global strategy and client leadership, navigating complex organisations and multicultural environments with calm authority and curiosity.

I first met Anne-Sophie in Milan in early 2024 and was immediately struck by her presence. Thoughtful, grounded and quietly powerful.

In this conversation we explore how curiosity drives both discovery and relationships, why people rarely fit neat formulas, and how leaders learn to balance logic with empathy.

One moment that stayed with me appears in the clip I’m sharing today. Anne-Sophie reflects on courage and growth and says:

“𝗜𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝗿, 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻.”

A simple line, yet it captures something many high-performing professionals recognise. Progress often sits just beyond the edge of comfort.

In the full episode we talk about:

• curiosity as a driver of both science and leadership
• navigating human relationships across cultures
• the role of reflection and reassessment in decision-making
• how passion grows from genuine interest rather than technical ability
• defining success on your own terms

It’s a thoughtful, natural conversation that fits closely with the themes explored in my book Balancing Act: Mastering Work, Wealth and Wellbeing - The Formula for Executive Success.

I’m delighted to be joining the European Conference on Club Management 2026 in St Andrews as a Keynote Speaker, hosted by the Club Management Association of Europe (CMAE) - and especially pleased to be part of their 25th year celebration!

What makes this event particularly meaningful for me is the industry itself. The sport, leisure, and hospitality sector is where I started my career, and it remains an area where I still spend a lot of my time working with leaders and organisations today. It’s an industry with a unique balance of high performance and exceptional service.

Leaders in this space are responsible for delivering remarkable, repeatable experiences for members and guests, often in environments built around relaxation, wellbeing, and leisure. Yet the people creating those environments are usually working at pace behind the scenes, striving to maintain standards, innovate, and compete for something incredibly valuable: people’s time and choice.

Leisure is one of the most competitive spaces there is. Organisations are constantly earning the right to be chosen again.

When it works well, it’s an incredible industry to be part of.

A privilege to be part of this milestone conference in St Andrews as CMAE celebrates 25 years.

I had the privilege of sitting down with 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗺 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗢𝗟𝗬, Olympic silver medallist from the 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝗢𝗹𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗰 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀, for a conversation that became part of the research behind my book BALANCING ACT - Mastering Work, Wealth and Wellbeing.

Adam made history in Paris as the first British man since 2008 to reach the Olympic podium in the C1 event. Yet what makes this conversation powerful is what sits behind that moment.

We talk about the emotional contrast of elite sport.
The exhilaration of team success alongside the sting of one mistake in an individual race.
The pressure of Olympic cycles.
The constant demand to perform when the margins are tiny.

Adam also shares how a career-threatening shoulder injury changed his direction, leading him into breathwork, recovery science and physiological regulation. That experience ultimately led to the creation of 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝘆, where he now coaches athletes, leaders and wellbeing professionals.

This episode explores:

• The psychological reality behind Olympic performance
• Recovering mentally when a single moment defines a result
• Breathwork as a tool for resilience and emotional regulation
• Training independently and developing self-leadership
• The transition from athlete to educator and coach

The clip I’m sharing here touches on something Adam speaks about with real conviction: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀.

Growing a business places increasing demands on the people leading it. Owners and entrepreneurs are responsible for setting direction, making strategic decisions, managing teams and maintaining commercial momentum, often while carrying the weight of operational pressure themselves.

Many businesses reach a stage where growth begins to stall. The challenge is not always the market opportunity or the business model. It is often the leadership capacity within the business that determines whether momentum continues or progress slows.

This interactive workshop explores how sustainable business growth depends on the relationship between strategy, leadership capability and the personal performance of the people running the organisation.

If you’re attending the festival, I’d love to see you there!

First book proof back from De Gruyter Brill today…. all very real now!

Six weeks away from the manuscript gave me the distance to open it with fresh eyes today, always a slightly nerve-wracking part of the editing process! Honestly though, I still really like it (phew!).

Writing BALANCING ACT: Mastering Work, Wealth and Wellbeing has been a journey that’s stretched well beyond the pages - conversations with leaders across industries, weaving in the strategic models I use with clients, and capturing the balance between performance, leadership, and living well.

Seeing it in print for the first time is equal parts exciting and humbling. Next week, it’s coming with me for some poolside reading (and no doubt, a few more scribbled notes in the margins).

Grateful for everyone who’s been part of this so far, and looking forward to sharing more as we get closer to launch!
