At last... the curse is broken!!! 2 seasons to get a positive result in a spring cup game despite playing some excellent league football.

The boys were in top form today. Pregame speech was all about effort and getting what you deserve from a football game.

Last week was one to forget, so much so I forgot to write a match report. The boys were slow and efforts were low. This week was polar opposites. From the first whistle to the last these lads grafted.

They never stopped trying and out worked a very good Herrington side who had one eye on promotion.

We created chance after chance and kept the opposition to long range chances, some of which required acrobatics saved from Ethan S.

Ethan C returning after injury brought energy up and down the right, Luc played one of his best games on the left with dead balls being a specialism of his today. Benn worked hard when played on either side when it was his turn.

Harry, Thomas and Benji were limitless engines through the middle with Jude and Casey defending solidly throughout the game and being the springboard for many attacks.

Freddie led the line and made a nuisance of himself, causing their defenders all kinds of hassle as he battled with them whilst holding the ball up.

A quick kick in taken from the left saw Luc flight a ball in for Thomas whose shot was saved, only to come back to him and bounce into the net.

After some good work up the right and a cross into the box from Benn found Thomas who made no mistake with his finish

Both teams had good chances and going into the final 10/15 we shook things up. Jude led the line up front with Freddie dropping in goal to start the transition into next season.

A brilliant game and even better performance from the Jarra lads.

Seems to be the same story each week at the moment.

Another tough day at the office for the boys.

Playing against a well organised Durham FC Gators side it's was strange game. For 10 minutes or so the boys were camped in their own half and couldn't get out but defended brilliantly before one quick counter saw us break away quickly and a good save by their keeper opened the game right up. From that point is was end to end with both teams going close, albeit Durham have a few more decent chances including hitting the bar and post but we had chances of our own with Spencer snatching at a few to put pressure on their defence and Harry, Spencer and Benn all shooting just wide.

Finally the deadlock was broken, we switched off for a corner and a straight ball into the box saw them tap in unmarked from close range.

The game continued in the same fashion of going end to end with both teams countering each other.

Durhams chances finally paid off as they overloaded our defence and doubled their advantage.

The boys in blue kept right at it and kept battling away before finally a bit of luck as the ball banded around the box and a call by the ref to allow play when it struck and arm saw Harry reduce the deficit.

Into the frantic final few minutes which seen the ball go from back to to front to back to front countless times as Durham pushed to kill to game as we pushed for an equaliser but time ran out on us and another good performance from the jarra lads but without the result, continuing our Spring Cup curse.

Delayed post as it's been a busy one.

Saturday saw us continue our spring cup journey. With a depleted squad due to holidays we mixed it up, tried some new ideas and for the most part they worked.

The boys continued to play well but without the results their efforts deserved. Going 2 down late in the first half from a well taken corner and a penalty before battling back with a quickly taken kick in by Benn, saw Harry finish from close range to reduce the deficit.

Consett then extended their lead once more only to have the gap shortened a second time with a second goal from Harry after some well worked midfield play set him free.

Freddie was outstanding in goal keeping Consett at bay whilst we pressed and created chances at the other end with their keeper making some good saves.

Eventually, being low on numbers we ran out of steam and Consett picked up a couple late goals to finish the game.

Moving on to Sunday we welcomed teams from the area to Perth Green for the Jarrow Festival.

6 teams playing out a group phase before going into finals.

First up was Blaydon Ambers. It was an end to end game but we got our noses in front with 2 well taken goals from Benn & Harry before being pegged back a goal. Eliot bagged us one more before we conceded again. We managed to hold on to see out the game.

In game 2 we played the eventual trophy winners in felling magpies. Probably our best performance of the day against a strong side who played a great game. A winner for felling with minutes to go sealed the game in their favour.

Next up was Washington Utd Greens. In a similar match to the first, both teams created chances and both keepers and defenders stood tall to see out a goalless stalemate.

On to round 4 where we played our old friends Washington Eindhoven who front kick off raced forward and scored within 20 seconds. The game played out evenly front there as that turned out to be the only goal of the game.

Round 5 was HTJ Valencia. As per usual this was a great game for the neutral and had everything but a goal. Near misses, close calls and top saves... no goals through.

Into our final we were up against Washington Utd Greens for the cup. It was a close game and one goal was enough to decide it. Shame that goal wasn't in our favour but we had a brilliant day all the same.

Tough session tonight which was a shame after such a good one last night.

Introduced a new drill to the boys which they really struggled to grasp and the instructions were going in one ear and out the other.

In hindsight I should have read the room and switched from my plan but we tried to stick it out despite the chaos. That one’s on me to learn from.

Towards the end we started seeing green shoots of the quick play we had been hoping to see throughout the practices.

Time to put it in practice in the end game. Giving one team a 4 goal head start and the other team and extra player they were set different tasks.
One hold onto the lead, play a low block and play out quick to catch them on the counter. The other use quick play to move the ball to create chances.

Tonight’s top banana was Eliot who throughout the end game kept his discipline when defending, played the ball quickly forward and when moving to midfield was going box to box to support at both ends of the pitch.

Took a rare opportunity to play on a bigger pitch when another team weren’t training. Played out a 5v5 match with 9v9 rules on a 7v7 pitch…
Introducing offsides, throw ins and headers presented an abundance of challenges to the boy but they smashed it.

They started off confused and frustrated about offsides and keeping possession on such a big pitch and finished with being frustrated because they held their runs and the pass didn’t come on time and keeping the ball with simple, smart passing.

Yes they were frustrated for a lot of it but that’s the start of the learning curve of offsides, throw ins and headers.

I’ve told the boys this is the first session of a year’s work to get them ready for the season after next as they get used to less touches of the ball and more movement across a bigger pitch. Learning to make selfless runs, when to make selfish runs to drive the team forward and when to play the right pass.
Great session, can’t wait for the next one

Delayed match report...it's been a busy few days.

The boys efforts of late turned into their best performance of late.
Playing our friends at Whitburn & Cleadon always produces a good game and this one was probably the best of the lot.
The game was played out at a ferocious pace with both teams playing on the front foot.
The teams went from end to end cancelling each other out, hitting crossbars, side netting's, keepers making good saves, defenders making last ditch tackles. The game went back and forth without any goals until finally Whitburn managed to get one over the line just before half time.
A chat with the lads at half time about more of the same and our time will come... that's exactly what happened.
The second half played out the same way with half chances at each end and teams countering each other to be thwarted by defenders staying strong and clearing their lines.
Finally it was our turn and a quick switch of play by Luc found Thomas who drove forward to level the game.
And once again the game was restarted and played out at a frantic pace. Not sure who's heart rates were higher, the players on both teams giving their all or both sets of coaches watching the countless "oh so close" moments play out in front of them.
A long ball through the middle from Ethan S bounced awkwardly for the defenders and keeper to mix up between them and Harry had the simple job of guiding it home.
The game heading to its final moments when a kick in was directed into the box and into the goal via a handball. Rather than let the goal stand the ref pulled it back for the penalty and despite Ethan S getting two hands on it and pushing it against the underside of the bar it dropped the wrong side of the line. Probably a fair result for the advantage not being played for the goal.
The final few moments saw both teams go long and quickly but the scoring was done and it's a game where both teams walk away extremely proud of how they played.

Freddie & Jude for their solid defensive work. Lost count of the number of tackles and clearances they made.
Harry for his tireless and unselfish forward play. Lost count of the number of times he held the ball up and played in his team mates into attacking positions

Another tough day at the office for the Thundercats

The lads performed really well, playing some great football but came up against a well organised Washington side.
The first half played out an even first half with both keepers and both sides defenders keeping it tight to go into the break with a clean sheet a piece. Despite the referee blowing the whistle before the full time had been played.

If the first half was all about defending then the second half was the exact opposite as both sides went for it. From end to end both teams went close before Washington took the lead with a swift counter and repeated it again soon after.
The jarra lads kept their heads up and kept playing the ball forward and that pressure soon paid off when Spencer reduced the deficit after good work up the left wing.

The game was tied up when Harry got on the scoresheet after a well worked team goal.

The game was stop start after that with the referee doing her very best to spoil what was playing out as a good game.

Washington adapted to the bizarre decisions she was giving better than the Jarra lads and managed to regain their lead before a penalty was given for the final kick of the game.

Three games in a row where the performance and effort doesn't equal the result but I can't ask anymore from the boys as they were brilliant on their efforts.

We started off the spring cup phase of the season.

I asked the boys to give me everything they've shown this season in terms of effort and performance and they gave me that in spades!!!!

Despite going being to two quick goal from 2 outstanding lobbed finishes the boys battled for every square inch of the pitch. Battle for every ball and pressed their opposition back into their own half for long spells whilst dealing with the their counters as they came.

That pressure would pay off when Benn raced clear of their defence and despite a good save he finished well at the second time of asking.

This only spurred the lads in yellow to try even harder and they came close to levelling on a number of occasions but lacked that cutting edge.

A wicked free kick saw the lads fall further behind before a free kick just inside half way was placed dangerously into the box for Benn to knock down to Luc who smashed home with a close range left footed finish.

The game continued to go back and forth with chances at both ends and some great saves by Ethan S, important tackles by Freddie before Thomas, Eliot, Harry, Ethan C and Luc drove the ball forward in turns but Wrekenton broke through the attack to extend their lead again.

The lads once again regrouped and battled forward and it was Harry's time to get on the score sheet. A quick kick in and a fast curling shot caught out the keeper and narrowed the deficit.

With time running out the boys pressed and pressed but came up against a wall of Wrekenton defenders who countered 3v1 but Thomas was equal to each counter and send the ball forward again.
Despite Jarrow looking like they had more goals in them time beat us and we couldn't get the goals to level up this week.

Once of the best displays of football these lads have played, they walked off that pitch proud as lions with smiles on their faces. Proof that the performance matters more than results in grassroots.
