IJC On Tour In Luxembourg

On the 11th May, Pete had the opportunity to attend one of the Luxembourg Kata Squad training sessions at their National Martial Arts Centre in Strassen.
He was welcomed by Jean Allard, who Nic had partnered at the Nordic Kata Competition last August in Sweden. Jean gave Pete a tour around their national centre, which they share with Taekwondo, Karate & Ju-Jutsu, with Judo/Ju-Jutsu having a third of the sprung mat area, Karate another third & Taekwondo the final third, with the sections being separated by a curtain similar to those found in our sports halls. It has a cafe & spectator seating on a balcony overlooking the dojo, as well as excellent changing rooms, showers, toilet facilities & meeting rooms.

The Luxembourg Kata Squad have training sessions three times per week, each of which is three hours long. After warming up, Pete & Jean focussed on practicing Itsutsu-No-Kata & Katame-No-Kata. At the recent European Kata Championships in Sarajevo, Jean & his kata partner Nico finished in 8th place in the Itsutsu-No-Kata category, & so Jean passed on some very useful advice & points to work on, making it an extremely valuable session.
Thank you to the Luxembourg Kata Squad for welcoming me to their dojo to train & in particular Jean for pairing up with me, it was great to catch up with you once again & I'm looking forward to the next time :)

2026 Western Area Closed Championships

On 26-4-26 IJC was represented at the Western Area Closed Championships, held at Kingsley School in Bideford, by Lewis & George. This event hasn't been held for a number of year & is also referred to as The Pete Murphy, named after the first Chairman of the Western Area.
First up was Lewis, competing in the Pre-Cadet section of the event at U 42kg. Lewis continued his impressive recent form, throwing his first opponent for Ippon & then holding down his second opponent, also for Ippon. These results saw Lewis take the Gold medal & become the 2026 Western Area Regional Champion :)
In the Cadet section of the event, George was competing in the U73kg weight category. George lost a very hard opening contest against the eventual Gold medalist, but then bounced back to win his second match with a strangle. In his third fight he threw & held his opponent for a Waza-Ari-Awasete Ippon win & then rounded off the day throwing his opponent twice for another Waza-Ari-Awasete Ippon win. So after a hard day's work George finished in a very creditable second place in the group, taking the Silver medal. However, more importantly for George this event was also an opportunity to gain points towards his 1st Dan & the result of his third contest saw him pick up the first 10 points towards the 100 he needs to be promoted to his black belt :)
Well done to both players, who are excellent representatives of IJC, & a big thank you to Nic who prepared & coached our players matside on the day :)
The Pete Murphy Western Area Closed Championships incorporates an inter county element to the competition, with each players results contributing to an overall total for their county. At the end of the event it was announced that Devon had retained the Pete Murphy Sword by the narrow margin of 3 points, in part thanks to Lewis & George's individual results.
Pete was also at the event, being assessed for his next refereeing level & after close of play he was confirmed as a National C Referee (again!).

2026 Nage-No-Kata Course

On Sunday 8th March we provided our third Kata course of the year, with a Nage-No-Kata course at South Brent JC, with Judoka joining us from across Devon, Somerset & Gloucestershire. We had 9 players on the course, 3 of whom were also accredited with it as a coach revalidation event.
With all of the participants having some previous experience of this Kata, we were able to pitch the course at a slightly higher level & help the participants develop their performance to a level that enabled five of them to be successfully assessed for their Level 1 Nage-No-Kata Award at the end of the day.
A big thanks to Nic, Bruce & Mat for assisting with both the delivery of the course, assessments & preparing the dojo.
We have three more Kata courses running this year (see below) if you're interested contact Pete for details:
14-6-26 Kodokan Goshin-Jutsu Course - South Brent JC
12-7-26 Kime-No-Kata Course - South Brent JC

2026 Blue Belt & Under Competition

On Saturday 28th February Nic, Warrick & four IJC players headed down to the Kazoku Blue Belt & Under competition in Newquay.
First onto the mat was Tommie in the Under 12 section of the event. Since his last competition, Tommie has really improved his game & only narrowly lost his first contest. However, he bounced back to win his next contest with a hold for Ippon, before snatching his third & final contest on a decision. This meant that Tommie finished in 3rd place & picked up a well deserved Bronze medal to go with his dramatically improved performance.
Next up was Lewis, in the Under 16 section of the competition. This was only his second event & he had a best of three match with the other player of his weight. He won his first match with a throw into a hold, his second match with a superb turnover into a hold down for Ippon & then finished off with a nice combination ending in an Ippon throw. So Lewis won 3-0 with a very impressive performance to take a convincing Gold medal.
In the Senior section of the event, Stu was first onto the mat in the men's middleweight category. He got off to a great start with a couple of minor scores, before finishing his first contest with a throw for Ippon. In his second contest, Stu had to come from behind after going behind to a minor score, before winning with a different throw for Ippon to take the Gold medal.
Last onto the mat for IJC was Chas in the men's heavyweight category. In his first contest he was caught on the ground & held down for Ippon. Before his second contest Chas received some tactical advice from his coaches & this led to a much improved performance in his second contest. Even though he was eventually held down again, this was a real breakthrough contest & another Bronze medal for the Club.
All four players showed a marked improvement in their Judo since their last competition & did the Club proud, very well done to you all :)
Also a big thank you to Nic & Warrick for preparing & coaching the players on the day, & to Pete for being part of the refereeing team.

Kata Outreach Visit to Kazoku JC

On Friday 6th February Nic, Mat & Pete visited Kazoku JC near Newquay, to deliver a Katame-No-Kata session, as a part of Ivybridge JC's initiative to support the development of Kata in Devon & Cornwall.
Kazoku JC have a couple of Kata sessions each week & having previously studied Nage-No-Kata (the Kata now required for promotion to 1st Dan), they have now moved onto Katame-No-Kata (the Kata now required for promotion to 2nd Dan).
The session started with a demonstration of the complete Katame-No-Kata by Mat & Nic, before Pete & Nic led the class through Set Two (Shime-Waza/strangulation techniques) & most of Set Three (Kensetsu-Waza/joint-locking techniques). The class worked with excellent focus & enthusiasm to learn & develop these techniques, making very pleasing progress during the course of the session.
The session was drawn to a close with a demonstration of Kodokan Goshin-Jutsu by British Kata Championship Bronze Medallists Nic & Mat, another of the Kata courses we provide each year.

Technical 2ND Dan Promotion

On the anniversary of his milestone achievement of becoming a black belt, the club celebrated Mat's promotion to Technical 2nd Dan.
Mat spend the Autumn preparing for his Dan Grade theory examination, as well as practicing his Kata, having taken a Bronze medal in Kodokan Goshin-Jutsu at the British Kata Championships at the end of the summer & therefore gaining a place on the British Kata Squad.
In November last year the Western Area's Director of Examiners Alan Kimber 7th Dan visited the club to assess Mat, & a number of the other senior players, for their Dan Grade theory examination.
Mat gave an excellent account of himself & made it easy for Alan to confirm that he had passed the theory examination for his Technical 2nd Dan.
Congratulations Mat & very well done from everyone at the club :)

2025 Senior Players Christmas Meal

On 18th December there was a great turnout by the Club's senior players & officials for the Christmas meal at The Horse & Groom pub in Bittaford, where Olly, Dawn & Pierre did us proud with a delicious festive feast. This year we were honoured to have special guests Gary, Lyshia & GB International Max Gregory join us, as well as returning players Adam Vosper & Ewan Baker, & a late appearance by Adam Whitfield which provided a great opportunity to catch up with 'old' friends & riminess about the good old days :)
