It is with deepest regret that tonight, after 46 years, Winlinton Wolves submitted their resignation from the Ayrshire Amateur Football Association.

As you know we have been struggling for the last couple of seasons and Barry came in at the start of this season and reinvigorated the team bringing in a raft of new players and things were looking promising. We had an encouraging start to the season but 3 heavy defeats in as many weeks has meant a number of players have left the club, leaving us with only around 7 dependable players.

This decision has not been taken lightly but we feel we have exhausted all avenues and really struggled to attract enough boys with the correct attitude and motivation to commit to Amateur football. Therefore we feel the club, my Uncle Abie founded in 1972, has no option but to resign from the league.

Apologies to all past and present players and committee who have enjoyed some fantastic times and formed lifelong friendships within this great club.

Yours Regrettably
Jason Hollas
Winlinton Wolves President

Wolves looked to get back to winning ways yesterday, with a much changed squad and three new players, in a home league game against Kilmarnock United.
The first 25mins of game were very even with both teams having half chances but not many threats. Then a long ball by Chris Galloway was picked up by Tam McPhee and he beat one defender and his shot was well saved by the keeper.
This seemed to spur Wolves on and 5mins later a quick free kick by Matty Robson was taken first time by Adam Boyd and his shot ended up in the corner of the net, 1-0. Wolves pushed on for the rest of the half and were unlucky not to go two up when Boyd picked up a loose ball 20 yards out and shot first time just over the bar.
The second half started with Killie coming more into the game and within 5mins a neat one two on the edge of the Wolves box saw their sub strike low into the corner to make it 1-1. Wolves fought back and after 55 mins should have went in front again when a corner was met by a good header by Galloway but was inches wide.
Against the run of play it was Killie who were to took the lead when a cross was met by their forward who’s header slipped passed Logan Pipe in goals. Wolves were then to find themselves down to 10 men when two poor tackles by McCormick were rightly punished with two yellow cards.
Wolves did not let this deter them and they pushed for an equaliser but by doing this they left gaps at the back and were punished twice in the last 5mins when Killie United scored late goals to make it 1-4.
Wolves performed a lot better than in previous weeks and worked hard for each other for the 90mins but indiscipline was to cost them again.

Winlinton Wolves played local rivals Irvine Meadow in the James Scott Memorial Cup at home yesterday.
After getting good results against higher league opposition in previous weeks Wolves started well and should have been one up when McPhee was one on one with the goalie but lobbed the ball over the bar. Meadow punished this miss by going straight up field with a long ball that was missed by the Wolves defence and Simpson had the easiest chance to slip by Kirkpatrick in goals to make it 0-1 after 10mins.
5mins later Meadow punished Wolves again when a free kick was picked up by C Gillies on the byline and his low cross was turned in by McGinn from a yard out, 0-2. Worse was to follow when after 20mins a corner from Meadow was headed in at the back post by D Gillies to make it 0-3.
Wolves rarely threatened but after 24 mins Wheatley picked up a loose ball in midfield and struck a ferocious shot from 25yards which was taken at the second attempt by the Meadow keeper. After 30mins meadow stretched their lead to 4 when after a good run down the wing by the meadow midfielder he crossed for McGinn to finish from 3yards out.
The second half started brighter for Wolves but they were to find themselves 5 behind on 50mins when a free kick for Meadow could only be parried by Kirkpatrick and McGinn was there to finish off the rebound. It could have been worse for Wolves after the hour when Meadow were awarded a penalty but the spot kick was missed.
Late in the game Wolves showed some fight and created a couple of chances and from one of these chances Wolves brought a goal back when debut boy Tommy Dunn, one of the few Wolves performers, crossed from a corner for Thomson to finish from 12 yards to make it 1-5. The scoring was not finished and in the last minute McMurtrie scored from a penalty to finish the game 1-6 to Meadow.
Overall it was a poor performance from Wolves and they need to pick themselves back up for another derby next week in the league against Broomlands.

Wolves played Heathside at home in the 1st Round of the Ayrshire Cup today.
Wolves started well and within 7mins went one up when a poor clearance from a corner was headed back into the box by William Nelson and Stevie Gray caught a fantastic volley on the turn finishing in the far corner.
5mins later John McMaster played a beautiful ball through to Nelson who with only the keeper to beat finished with a poor shot that the keeper was able to save.
Heathside then started to come into the game and Wolves keeper Chris Kirkpatrick had to save from a good free kick and then turned a good header over the bar. The first half finished with Heathside well on top but not being able to score.
The second half started with Wolves coming back into the game and Tam McPhee coming close three times but goalie saved each effort, but McPhee would not be beat and after 65 mins he was played through by Adam Boyd and his shot from 20 yards nestled in the corner to make it 2-0.
Just 5mins later a deep corner from Nelson was met at the back post with the head by the impressive Dylan Nimmo to make it 3-0.
Wolves were now in full control and a long ball in 80mins was met by McPhee and he easily slipped the ball past the keeper. Wolves rounded off a good solid performance when McPhee made it to the byline to put in a low cross which was met sweetly by Adam Boyd to make it 5-0.
This result against a good young team provides confidence going forward to the Scottish cup game next week away to Campbelltown.

An under strength Wolves played Symington at home in the league today.
Wolves started well and within 3mins a long ball from Nimmo was pushed wide by McPhee. After 12mins William Nelson put Adam Boyd down the wing and his cross was met by the head of Bryan Boyd and again it went just wide.
It was one way traffic for the rest of the half with McPhee, Nelson and Gray going close but Wolves couldn’t get the goal.
The second half started the same way and John McMaster was unlucky with a lob from 30 yards struck the crossbar. McPhee had another chance that was saved by the keeper. Eventually Wolves made the breakthrough after 62mins from a corner which was strongly finished by the head of Chris Affleck. Wolves then let Symington into the game when there forward broke down the left and was able to squeeze a shot by Kirkpatrick in goal to make it 1-1. Unbelievably Symington then went 2-1 up when there Number 8 had a fantastic shot from 35 yards that left Kirkpatrick with no chance after 70mins.
After 80 mins Bryan Boyd thought he had brought it level when he headed into the net from the back post but the referee chalked it off for apparently being offside. Although 2mins later the same man did equalise with a header from a corner. With 5mins left Wolves then took the lead when from a great move involving Wheatley who passed to Boyd who slipped in Gray and he was able to squeeze the ball past the keeper to make it 3-2 with only minutes left.
Then in the last minute a long ball from Symington was about to be put out by Affleck but as he went to kick the ball he was barged in the back, which the referee incredibly missed, and the Symington winger crossed to their forward to finish and make it 3-3. This was how the game finished.
Another good performance from Wolves and leaves them undefeated after 2 games but they need to start taking more of the chances they are making.

Wolves started this seasons campaign in the second division with a new Manager, Barry Nelson, and basically a new team. Today they travelled to Killie Utd with 7 missing players due to suspension, injuries and holidays. Ex-players Alan Cronie and Stevie Thomson helped them out.
The game started frantically and Wolves were 1-0 down with 3mins gone. Within 6mins Wolves were level when Bryan Boyd played Tam McPhee down the wing and he squared for Willie Nelson to finish from 5 yards. Wolves then scored twice in 4mins, McPhee getting to the long ball first to slip by the keeper and the same player curled the ball into the top corner from the corner of the box, after a great move, to make it 3-1 and 10mins gone.
Wolves continued to press and created some great chances without going further in front. These missed chances were punished in the last minute of the half when Killie brought a goal back to make it 3-2 at half time.
The second half started poorly for Wolves and Killie United scored 3 goals in the first 25 mins. Now 5-3 down Wolves looked out of it but a good corner from Stevie Gray saw Neil Hanvey header home to make it 5-4 after 75mins. Unbelievably Wolves levelled on 78 mins when Hanvey broke from midfield and played ball to Gray whose good shot was palmed by keeper to the corner of the box where Boyd caught a ferocious shot into the roof of the net.
With 10mins left Boyd pressured the left back and won the ball back to put in a perfect cross for Gray to finish from 6 yards, 6-5. Wolves defended well for the last 10mins and escaped a last gasp chance for Killie that just slipped past the post.
A great, hard fought win for Winlinton Wolves to start the season. Big thanks to Alan and Stevie who stepped into help out.
