This Saturday, we introduced a fantastic game designed to help dogs with recall called "Orientation Square." Here’s how it works: Place some food in one spot and while your dog enjoys it, move to another spot. When your dog either comes over or glances at you, celebrate enthusiastically with a "Good boy!" and then place the next piece of food down. Just keep repeating this!

So, how does this improve recall? When your dog finishes the food, he’ll choose to engage with you—not because you've offered more food yet, but because he wants to connect. By doing this, he learns to make decisions independently, reaping the rewards without relying on commands. It’s all about forging that bond!

Have you got a dog that recalls back to you but then stands away with a look that says "you're not getting my lead on!" They don't want the fun to stop and they have learnt that lead going on means fun stops and were going home! Teaching them "Middle" allows you to put that lead back on without a struggle. But please make sure you still play a bit with them when the lead is on so they don't view the lead negatively.

**The Issue with Routine: Over-Excitement Before Events** When a dog knows exactly when fun activities will happen—like a morning walk at 7:00 AM or dinner at 5:00 PM—they start getting excited too early. This excitement, called anticipation, causes their brains to release chemicals like dopamine and adrenaline even before the event starts. For instance, if a dog is used to walking at 7:00 AM, they might begin getting hyped as early as 6:30 AM. By the time you put on the leash, they’re already overexcited. This heightened state of excitement can cause problems. Once you step outside, they might react strongly to sights or sounds, like other dogs or cyclists, because they’re too hyped up to focus. So, managing those expectations is key to keeping your dog calm and attentive! Try breaking up the predictors. For example vary the times of your walks. Desensitize the lead/harness by putting it on randomly, doing something calming with your dog and take the equipment off again. Be unpredictable!
