Lochter Fishery

Lochter Fishery Lochter Fishery, an integral part of Lochter Activity Centre. Situated just outside Oldmeldrum There is also free tea and coffee making facilities available.

Lochter Fishery consists of 3 Fly Fishing Lochs over some 14 acres of water and two Bait Ponds. Once of our lochs is the unique Muckle Troot Loch which is int he shape of a big leaping trout! We are open from 8am to dusk all years round, 7 days a week and there is no necessity to book as there is always ample space. Stocking
We are a rainbow trouts fishery which also has a natural head of brown trout. Our rainbow trout are of the finest quality and range from alb to well over double figures. We rear most of our fish ourselves in our specially designed stream holding ponds and produce strong, well toned fish to test any weaknesses in your knots. We keep a very close eye on catch rates and conditions at the Fishery too. We stock generously whilst balancing needs of novices with those of the expert making it neither too easy more too difficult to catch fish. There are a few pastimes more relaxing than trout fishing and we are the ideal place to come and enjoy the sport in our peaceful idyllic surroundings. Ospreys
Uniquely, in the Summer we have our own pair of resident ospreys that nest at the Fishery and while here you can have a front row view of their chick rearing and fishing antics not only from nearby but also from the comfort of our restaurant where footage of the nest is streamed live in high definition. Award Winners
We are a Troutmaster water and in the past few year have been selected from ALL Scottish fisheries by SANA to very successfully hold both the National and International Stillwater Championships. Lochter Fishery are the past winners of the Trout Fisherman magazine Fishery of the Year. Some 15,000 anglers a year enjoy what we have to offer so we must be doing something right. The Bothy
We have a very nice bothy where you can relax and reflect on your days fishing. You are able to order any of the delicious food from our restaurant menu but enjoy it in a more informal conform of the bothy or outside on the picnic tables. We have a licensed bar in the bothy, so after a hard days fishing you can unwind with a cold beer or warming dram. Flies and Lures
There is an extensive range of proven flies and lures suited to catching our fish and don't forget to check the returns book to glean an insight from those who have fished before you. If you have forgotten your fishing kit then don't despair because you can hire all the equipment you need. Tuition
We welcome and have a track record for teaching total beginners how to fly fish. There is a lot of mystique associated with fly fishing so if you have always wanted to give it a go but have been a bit hesitant then hold back no more. We have all the equipment necessary, all you need to do is contact us to fix up your lesson. Lessons are £20 for one hour which includes equipment hire. Group Bookings
We offer special deals for group bookings (clubs/pubs/work outings) where tuition, hire, food and drink can be easily organised to meet your needs. For fishing only bookings we can arrange BBQ facilities for your use and you can get your refreshments from the Bothy Bar. It really is a great chance to do something different and enjoy yourself in the great outdoors with the scenic view of Bennachie in the background. Whether you are a lone fisher looking for peaceful fishing reflection, a novice filled with hope or a group of friends sharing collective fun… then come along to Lochter Fishery and see what we are all about!

Well done there to Riley, a lovely pic there of him with his first fish on the fly and one from the weekend with Stonehaven angling club / Somers.
Still much the same on the algae front nice and clear on muckle but algae on the other two. Please note we won't be doing any food this coming Sunday due to a private event with activities so you'll need to make up a piece.
Cheers Brian

A couple of pics from the bait ponds always good to see the juniors with their first fish. Thankfully a bit cooler today after that wee heatwave this week, water temps have come up 5 deg f from Wednesday to Friday which have slowed things down a bit from the start of the week when we have had some great sport on dries. The middle loch is steadily improving on the algae front and still nice and clear on the muckle. Cheers Brian

A nice start to the day, mornings and last thing best bet just now. Quite hard going through the day especially if the sun breaks through. Water temps have dropped back thankfully to 60 deg f but we do still have somme algae on the bottom 2 lochs but is showingsigns of improvement, the muckle however stays clear. Cheers Brian

We have just some sad news about one of our regulars, Brian Ross has just passed away. Brian has not been able to come out for some time due to ill health but he would call every week to see how the fishing was doing and to ask for everyone especially fishery dog. If you ever met Brian I'm sure he will have told you about his famous carpet fly. Rip. Brian

Congratulations to Zac Anderson for catching his first fish on the fly a nice 🌈 on a buzzer. Current conditions are not easy with the warm water temps but eary and late birds not surprisingly are doing best, at least water temps have dropped a wee bit from the 66 (no football reference for a change) of last week. Another pic there from the bait pond of another happy youngster. Daddies have died down a bit this week but still good at time, my thinking id that they are being taken for the female dragon fly, I've never seen so many dragon flies as this year. Nice to have robert back out fishing again after his wee scare. Cheers Brian

Spectacular pic there from Les again just at sunset last night, a late evening snack for the osprey chicks before bedtime.
Have had a few fishers lately saying they have been broken by big fish, this one pictured will have been one of them and has unfortunately paid the price. I couldn’t see any damage but on closer inspection a big Ali McCoist was lodged in its throat, remember its not the fishes fault you get broken its always the angler thats got something wrong, be it leader, knots or too much tension.
Guess the weight to the nearest ounce, first to get it right wins a mars bar.
On a more serious note a get well message to Robert, hope your on the mend now and see you back on your cairty before long.

Cheers. Brian

Josh there with a belter of a first fish a right chunder, after a few near misses he got this one on the dry. We managed a quick out and back in since it was his first fish, but normally keep fish in the water whenever possible. The fish went back no bother. A wee snap also from the new bait pond. After the warmer temps last week water temps have stabilised at a reasonable 65 deg f, forecast is for a bit cooler this coming week so here's hoping that's right. Daddies doing well with a nice breeze and when the sun dips. Cheers Brian
