Marie Law Pilates

Marie Law Pilates Pilates is a series of exercises developed & taught by Joseph Pilates. The aim of the method is to rebalance the muscles & recruit deep postural muscles.

Having always been an active person participating over the years in rowing, hiking, skiing and running I’ve always been appreciative of my physical fitness and maintaining it. While working in Norway as a Project Manager in the Oil Industry (my original career) I hurt my back for a 2nd time and it was diagnosed as a 2nd herniated/slipped disc, the 1st herniation had never been officially identifie

d. Through my Chiropractor I was directed to Pilates for rehabilitation and to strengthen my back muscles. That was around 2010 in Stavanger where I found a fantastic studio with both mat and reformer classes. At this point I didn’t really know much about Pilates and had never encountered a reformer ‘machine’ before! Through Pilates I quickly noticed an improvement in my back health and very soon had ditched my gym membership and was doing 3, sometimes 4 Pilates classes per week. This allowed me to continue with the other outdoor pursuits I love, which especially in Norway are an important part of life. I also managed to fit in a ski season working as a Chalet Girl (albeit a mature one!) in the French Alps to coincide with my 40th Birthday and then one more ski season for good measure before returning to Aberdeen in 2013. Wanting to continue with my Pilates ‘habit’ on my return to Aberdeen I decided that along with attending classes I would like to become an instructor myself. Having achieved my certification in 2015 I’m excited to be starting to teach some classes in Aberdeen and at http://www.pilatesdundee.co.uk Although I initially came to Pilates for rehab and to allow me to continue with outdoor pursuits I have also found it to be a great stress reliever and would promote Pilates for both reasons.

So many versions of the Mermaid, we don’t do much lateral movement in daily life though. It all helps to mobilise the spine.

As Joseph Pilates said, “If your spine is stiff at 30, you are old. If it is flexible at 60 you are young”

Aiming for 10k by September! I’m a returning runner, did loads but about 15years ago now. Gently does it 😊

Mermaid is such a lovely exercise and almost every client that tries it says ‘Oh, that feels good, didn’t realise I needed that’
However the 90/90 legs can be uncomfortable for some. The Pilates apparatus allows us to adapt the exercise to suit the client.

10 years of teaching Pilates, 3 years of teaching on the large equipment. Always more to learn. Progression not Perfection ❤️

I love when these memories pop up and remind me how far I’ve come. 🤩

3 years since I completed my studies to teach on the large Pilates equipment. 100s of hours of self practice, practice teaching, observation, case studies and more.

2026 is also my 10th year of teaching Mat Pilates. I love them both, group Mat classes and the more bespoke, individual sessions on the Reformer, Tower and Chair ❤️

My home studio upgrade is the icing on the cake … more pics to follow

DM me for more info or email [email protected]

I did it!! 🤓🧑‍🎓
After just over a year of study, class observation, self practice, practice teaching, case studies, written and practical exams I’m now …. Drum Roll 🥁 🥁 🥁

An APPI Comprehensive Equipment Pilates Instructor 🤩 🙌 🤩 🙌

This has been about 13 years in the making though. I started going to Pilates around 2010 with Anette Bonnez at the fantastic House of Movement in Stavanger 🇳🇴
That’s where my Pilates obsession began 😂 After returning the UK I eventually qualified to teach Mat work Pilates with and started to teach in 2017.

I always wanted to train to teach on the large equipment so for my 50th Birthday in 2022 I decided to book on the course and ‘just do it!’.

I’m now teaching Mat and Equipment sessions and loving it 🥰

Thanks to Kathy at Forres Pilates for letting me use the studio for self practice and teaching practice, Iain Bennett for being a willing guinea pig for my teaching practice and other family and friends who were willing to try me out.
