Even as a coach using the amazing Forge Gym Inverness app for clients. I’ve been using it for my own training for a long time!… 🌟

Even as someone who prefers writing notes. It keeps my notes for long periods of time, weight estimates, 5-8 rep maxes, volume, water, daily goals and supports someone with a memory of a fish like me. Furthermore, It connect’s to your fitness devices if you use any to see dat heart rate and sleep.

It’s helped produce a variety of fitness goals for me, even becoming a superhero like the last photo.

Gym Question of the Day - Strength & Deadlift 💪

Colton Engelbrecht at 125kg is arguably the strongest man that ever lived, deadlifting 520kg with wraps and nearly barehanded (only grip that let him down).

He’s far lighter than Eddie Hall and Thor. Colton has the highest powerlifting total ever with a combined total of 1225kg.

Yet, many say It means f’all as it’s sumo?

Would it change if it was 550kg, 600kg, 700kg?

Perception of strength is an interesting topic because there’s still subjectivity in a lot of ways whilst using numerical measurements. Someone with the ability to externally rotate 20kg or Side Lat Raise 20kg with good form is also considered extremely strong.

What’s your thoughts?

Su***de Awareness Day 26 (A day late!) 🎈❤️

My 4x Topics to focus on within awareness, and moving forwards.

There’s so much depth that can be added to every point, alongside many other important topics of specificity for awareness. This is just abstracts of some topics themselves.

Many take their own life never speak up at all, or it’s completely the opposite and they feel they’ve been let down so many times it’s unbelievable.

We’re at a point where coping mechanisms have overtaken places of safety to accept and heal. And it’s very hard to heal in an unstable environment. As a result, the consequences are greater. Being told to ‘deal with’ instead of being shown does not work - or it does for a brief time, not for a long time.

The cost of living and funding of health services is a cause for the above. I do not know the answers, so I will focus on what you do have the power to do, and that is to speak out 🌟; 🎈🌻

Some Pull Day exercises!

Heavy Top Sets, extra bit of rotation and big gains - See my old Pull Day video for some more precise form tips (I’ll post this week)

🌟 DB Row - A 🐐 - 2 sets here, focusing on that progressing with form and 70kg’s. Good stretch, pull the lat and teres major more then explosive as possible to get a great contraction.

🌟 Seated Cable unilateral Lat Pull Down - 3 sets. Personally I struggle with these for contraction due to my left lat. I always promote the basic with elbow to hip, imagine pushing the armpit away on the eccentric for deeper stretch as well as moving the body forward. Opposite shoulder always slightly further forward than the other.

🌟 Lying T-Bar Row - Wide, 3x sets - elbows up higher here and palms pronated or slightly angled to target the upper & mid back more than the last. This set was a bit too heavy due to smashing previous exercises.

🌟 Standing Rear Delt Cable Fly - 3x sets, 1.5s for 2 sets with failure in lengthened position too. I personally find this really fires my rear delts. I get a great contraction and it reduces my trap taking into elements into account as much. Sternum up allows deeper stretch on them.

🌟 CG Lat Pull Down - 2 sets - I restrict a deeper stretch until the last set where I go to failure. I.e. I imagine squeezing a ball in between my traps and hitting the sternum with my thumbs. On the day, the angle of my back tweaks to where I feel it more.

🌟 2x Bicep exercises at the end not documented, but these are boring 😂

Tricep Pushdowns vs Tricep Extensions! - Simple Gym Series (With some extra tips) 💪

These are not the same exercise!

Both exercises do recruit all three heads of tricep, and have an extension motion. However, the angles of extension and plane of movement differ slightly.

Tricep Pushdowns are more performed more in a vertical motion, getting it closer to your chest and almost being ‘over’ the bar. Elbows being behind the body, Pushing down like using a pump to blow up something. Because there is more stability too, you can generally load heavier on this. Personally, I find there’s more stress on the elbows too.

Tricep extensions, the elbows are by the sides or in front of the body. Imagining extending in an arc motion (despite the plane being straight, just angled). These can also be done overhead. Because there is slightly more ‘flexibility’ with using a rope, an advanced tip is to flick the thumbs through and away at the bottom, really contracting the long head of the tricep.

I utilise both in my programs and they’re fantastic. Make sure you get a full active ROM and give any-or a variation-a try.

NOTE - The video here I’m doing back supported and using a unusual attachment for triceps which is fantastic for Pushdowns, it looks like a wee boomerang at Forge Gym Inverness

Accountability

How?

You see a coach mention or describe they’re someone who’ll keep you accountable for your actions everyday.

But there’s never mention of the topic of how, and what it entails. And that’s the important point.

There needs to be discourse & specificity with the individual, not just a method of holding accountable saying ‘you’ve fu**ed up, it’s your fault’.

It doesn’t work.

Understand if ‘positive reiteration’, reaffirming or ‘straight-to-the-point’ feedback alongside planning to implement to sustain consistency is where it counts.

If they’re saying it’s a ‘hot topic, but I call my clients out’ with no further detail. It’s a red flag. The focus will be on the few it worked with rather the many it didn’t.

Tri-Sets & Exercise Order (with Ryan!) 🌟 💪

Something different here for an accessory day. ⬇️

-Generally speaking, with exercise selection, compounds and heavier movements are near the beginning of the workout, so there’s more energy to push, less fatigue and able to hit the larger muscles harder.

For this accessory day, we’ve done the reverse - we added 3x tri-sets at the start with a delts & arms focus, with the compounds in the latter half of the workout. You won’t be able to lift as heavy but the stimulus will still be there for hypertrophy.

Tri-sets are just 3x exercises performed back-to-back, like supersets or drop sets with no rest. We allowed some rest as we’re kind. (Then there’s Giant sets which are 4x different exercise B2B in 1 set - insanity)

1. Shoulder Tri-Set: Rear Delt Fly/Raise, Side Lat Raise, Front raise. All targeting different heads of the shoulder. You can add some forced reps by swinging to unilaterally in the last set.

2. Tricep Tri-Set: Single-Arm Tricep Extension (Behind Neck), Tricep Rope Extension, Tricep Pushdown. All targeting 3x heads of the triceps in different movement planes and elbow positioning tweaking things slightly.

3. Bicep Tri-Set (DB): Seated DB Hammer Curls (Bi-Lateral), DB Spider Curls, Seated DB Curls (Uni-Lateral). Hitting both heads of the bicep and working the forearms.

4. We had Machine Chest Press super-set with Press Ups recorded but Ryan died during this period unfortunately.

Something important to note is that ‘the pump’, does not correlate directly with muscle growth. Progressive overload still needs to be the focus. But it’s a damn good indicator and sometimes adapting things can really challenge the muscles, becoming more mindfulness of a great stimulus again.

(Side note - Capcut’s being a bit funny with editing in video sizing for insta now so will adapt next time or keep to a reel. Videos are at 1.2 speed)
