The chaotic original 12-hole routing at Prestwick Golf Club played over the land now occupied by holes 1–3 and 13–18, before the changes of 1883. Given how cramped - but brilliant - those holes are today, it's remarkable that twelve were once squeezed into the same ground.

We've long believed that golf is at its best on a par 68 - where the walk is easy, the course still asks questions, and it never looks long on the card.

Last week's lap around Piltdown Golf Club confirmed it again. One par 5, heaps of variety in the par 4s, and not a single bunker anywhere. It's hard to think of a better place for an evening round with a labrador alongside you.
