Been playing around with Tenkara recently and had some great results to my Satoki Rod by Tenkara USA. Being that bit further away seems to give an edge when compared to contact nymphing with a standard nymphing rod. The Satoki extends to 13’7” and has already landed a 54cm grayling in quite fast water. Suffice to say, I’m impressed, both with its ability to land bigger fish in fast water without a reel, but also to get more hook ups.

Flat calm and sunny is often not seen as good fishing conditions, but pike in these colder months quite often come into the shallows to sunbathe during such times. That can mean very visual action. With big bow waves chasing flies and slashing, splashy takes near the surface.

The Tay, being such a big river with so many tributaries has its advantages. There is not a day in the year when a salmon doesn’t swim upstream. There are the peak runs in May (beautiful big bars of silver) August (the grilse run) and October (back end beasts). We tend to focus most of our time on the upper Tay, where it’s not so wide, and the tributaries, and leave the lower river for those who prefer harling, spinning or showing off their impressive distance fly casting. The options for fishing venues are vast, with the Lyon, Tummel, Garry, Earn, Ericht, Isla and others all providing really good fishing at different stages of the season.

Argyll offers some lovely rivers for relatively easy salmon fishing. You don’t have to be able to cast to the moon. With small rivers short casts are often enough to cover that spot where the salmon lie. We have been lucky to help many beginners over the years to get their first Atlantic salmon on the fly.

Over 50cm. Proper lump! 🐟🐟

Well done Devin! It was Devins first time Euro nymphing and first time grayling fishing - and with that grayling he’s been spoilt for all other trips after! 🤓

After losing a couple over the last days it was great to get this Tay salmon in the net. Nice one Richard

I love that fishing takes you to new places, and even more I love the puzzle of which fly at which depth and with which method. It never ends, and it’s always a magic feeling when that salmon takes!

When the river dropped and things got tricky we took to nymphing for salmon.
Well, the truth is, we tried everything. Stripping hair wings, riffle hitching, slow swinging with heavy flies and finally nymphing, which worked 👍
