Equine "spook busting" is a training process designed to help horses overcome their natural instinct to flee from frightening objects, sounds, or situations. Spook busting aims to build a horse’s confidence, trust in their handler, and ability to remain calm, often referred to as becoming "bombproof".

🟢 Core Principles of Spook Busting
Desensitization & Habituation: Gradually introducing the horse to "scary" items—such as tarpaulins, traffic cones, flags, and balloons—in a controlled, safe environment until they no longer provoke a fear response.

🟢 “Slowly, Slowly Wins the Race": Effective training takes time; rushing can heighten fear. It is crucial to work at the edge of the horse's comfort zone, avoiding overwhelming the horse with fear

🟢 Positive Reinforcement: Rewarding calm behavior, such as looking at or approaching an object, with praise, food rewards, or scratching.

🟢 Groundwork First: Many trainers recommend introducing new, scary objects on the ground first before attempting to ride past them.
