Top Gun: Ingatestone 2's Flying High at Five From Five

If Ingatestone's 2nd XI were starring in an 80s blockbuster, they'd be firmly in the montage sequence. The music is pumping, confidence is soaring, and every challenge ends with another victory.

Travelling to Old Chelmsfordians, the league leaders arrived looking to maintain their perfect start. By the end of the afternoon, they had done exactly that, securing an eight-wicket win to make it five wins from five matches.

Old Chelmsfordians chose to bat first, but Ingatestone's bowlers soon switched into Terminator mode. Every time the hosts threatened to build momentum, another wicket arrived. Uday Patel's 37 offered some resistance, but the visitors kept applying pressure throughout.

Mark Stratton and David Brown played the role of Maverick and Goose with the ball, each taking three wickets, while Conor Brailey chipped in with two as Old Chelmsfordians were dismissed for 149.

Chasing 150, Ingatestone's response was pure Rocky IV.

Stratton and Brown took off from the opening over, sharing a match-winning stand of 134. Stratton struck 49, before falling just short of a deserved half-century.

Brown delivered the knockout blows with an unbeaten 84 from only 50 balls, smashing 13 fours and 3 sixes in an innings packed with more fireworks than the finale of Back to the Future.

The target was reached in just 19.4 overs, sealing another convincing victory and keeping Ingatestone unbeaten at the top of the table.

Five games. Five wins. Still top.

Next up is a blockbuster showdown with third-placed Boreham Royals. Every great 80s movie needs a worthy rival, and next week's clash promises to be the biggest box-office hit of the season so far.

The incredible 1st team run of wins has come to an end against a very good High Roding side, many have tipped to win the league. We can certainly hold our heads up high, especially as we're still top of the table.

The 2nd team continue their fantastic unbeaten run with a comfortable win at OCs, and the 3rd team win a nail biter against Tillingham. Both 2s and 3s remain top of their divisions. Come down tomorrow to watch the Sunday XI vs Benfleet. 🏏☀🍺

Wharram Piece – The 3s go marching on.

Ingatestone played Basildon & Pitsea in the baking sun at Wickford Memorial Ground. There were casualties along the way before peace was finally declared and Ingatestone the victors.

Basildon & Pitsea won the toss and made the fatal error of putting the batting machine of Ingatestone 3s in first.

Mills and Lee combined for a comfortable start of 51 off 8 overs. Mills (30) was the victim of the lesser-spotted controversial bowled decision. A conflab between the umpires confirmed it was a tickle of the ball on stump that had dislodged the bail and not the keeper.

Lee and Steel consolidated to take Ingatestone to drinks. Squash drawn from the municipal toilet sink a 5-minute walk away was a welcome treat in the heat. But soon after, the temperature got to Lee’s head and his dance down the wicket led to a stumping for 43.

Steel put on 39 before going LBW, with a rare agreement given that he genuinely was.

D Wharram moved the pace on with 34 from 31 until being skittled. The exuberance of youth fired the score well-past 200 with Scales making 18 from 12 and Bray launching to 27 off 23.

At 233-8 on a pitch of suspect quality, Ingatestone were well in front.

A tactical masterclass saw an in-out field making the batters work hard for runs and tire them in the heat. It soon drew dividends. The ever-reliable H Wharram opened the bowling with his trademark line & length, bringing an early clatter of stumps. He was ably backed up by Bray, who was unlucky not to take a scalp himself.

A change of bowling saw Young on the money early to bowl Basildon’s captain and opener.

Fielding casualties left Ingatestone worried. First D Wharram banged his head, and continued fielding by aiming for the middle of the 3 balls he could see. Scales had to leave the field after a bad landing. Down to 10, the gaps began to open more.

The game started to tilt away as boundaries leaked, until there was absolute carnage in the 12th over bowled by Vyas. On the 3rd ball, the dangerous-looking Shroff looped one up to third-man; a lovely piece of fielding from H Wharram kept a watchful eye running in to make the catch. On the 5th ball, Vyas bowled the new batter . On the 7th(!) ball, the new man dropped one into the covers and ran; he didn’t count on Young making a clean pick and up delivering a bullet direct-throw to take out the stumps at the keeper’s end. Cue huge celebrations as he had removed big-hitter Akki for 35 from 24 balls. Comparisons were made to Gary Pratt, leading to bemused looks from Young (born 6 years after that Ashes).

The next over saw Young take another wicket, bowling 2 cracker-jack balls before surprising the batter with a loose full-toss that he plopped into Mills’ bread-basket.

At 73-7, the tails were firmly up. There was some stubborn resistance, but Basildon soon wilted. Mills bowled a slider that hit the stumps at ankle-height, Vyas took his 3rd wicket, before Shah pitched in with two wickets: an LBW as plumb as it comes and an edge that stuck into Wilkin’s gloves to leave Basildon 104 all out.

Ingatestone 2’s win by 5 Wickets!

Two mighty sides clashed in a titanic battle for supremacy. Ingatestone entered the fray holding the crown at number one, with Brookweald breathing down their necks in second place. Brookweald won the toss and elected to bat, eager to dethrone the leaders on their own patch. What followed was a dramatic chronicle of defiance, heroic centuries, and a pursuit so swift it left the challengers conquered and Ingatestone’s perfect record unblemished.

The opening scene began in tragedy for Brookweald, as opener Harvey fell early to Panton's clever deceit. But, like a warrior-king taking the field, Ryan Chapman struck a breathless 71 from 43 balls, peppered with twelve boundaries and two towering maximums.
When Chapman was caught off Mark Stratton’s line, Malcolm Swettenham (33) and Jason Biggs, who forged a noble 59, steadied the ship to threaten Ingatestone's reign.

Just as the visitors threatened to post an unshakeable score, Ingatestone’s bowling generals turned the tide:
James Brailey acted as executioner, tearing through the tail to claim 3 wickets for a mere 26 runs.
Darren Smith sowed chaos, taking 2 crucial wickets and a sharp run-out.
The curtain fell on Brookweald’s innings at 247 all out. A competitive total, but one that left the gate open for an epic counter-offensive.

If Brookweald’s innings was a tale of collective grit, Ingatestone’s response was a masterclass dominated by a single protagonist: David Brown.
Entering the fray with the weight of the crown on his shoulders, Brown played the role of a lifetime. He smote the Brookweald attack to all corners of the ground, anchoring the entire response with a match-defining 114. Though Anthony Hill bowled with furious intent—capturing 3 wickets for 65 runs—he could not break Brown's resolve.
Qureshi (23) and Bates (20) offered support, but it was Brown’s century that kept the top spot secure.

There was to be no late tragedy for the hosts. Mark Stratton (30*) and Richard Edmunds (18*) assumed the mantle of composed stage managers, guiding Ingatestone past the target in just 38.1 overs.
The grand bounty of 26 league points cemented their place at the top of the league.
