Match Day 16

Mid Lincs League action.

Welton FC v Immingham Pilgrims

Melton 3 - 4 Pilgrims

WOW. Top of the table clash with league leaders Pilgrims taking on second place Welton in what was effectively a league decider. The Pilgrims held their nerve and showed the necessary grit to put one hand on the league trophy. A win in the Pilgrims next league game crowns them champions 👌💪.

The first half got off to a blustery start with the ball being held up in the wind for both sides. The Pilgrims like to have the ball on the floor and play nice football but unfortunately the farmers field offered up today prevented such play. The Pilgrims quickly took the lead and it was through comeback kid Joe pressuring the Welton full back into a mistake which allowed Joe to send a looping shot over the keeper and settle early nerves. This stung Welton into life and through the time old style of route one football they launched it forward relentlessly to their only outlet. This outlet was a strong and tricky striker who scored two quick fire goals after being afforded too much space. For the first time this season the boys were behind, now we get to see what their response would be. The response was emphatic, firstly our prolific talisman Nicky continued his record of scoring in every single game this season when he rifled in from just inside the 18 yard box. Next a fine corner from Noah was knocked down by Mason into the path of the onrushing Joe who smashed a first time finish powerfully past the keeper. With their tails firmly up the Pilgrims killed the game with a fourth goal from Joe and assisted by Noah, who is our ever present grafter, picking up a loose ball from a corner and playing into the path of Joe who full of confidence slotted home the fourth and his hat trick. Absolute scenes. Half time.

Second half began with the Pilgrims in control through a a domineering midfield display by Captain Cam who was smashing into tackles and using the ball with expert effectiveness. Not to be out done in the smashing department was Max who was busy keeping their striker quiet. Anytime Welton broke we had the combined pace of Dennis and a much assured Hazza providing a strong backbone. Couple this with the guile of William and the boys had a solid base to build from. Louis and Callum brought steel and flare to the midfield alongside Reece’s constant composure and hard work. Mason was always a threat offering an expert outlet for the team. No top of the table clash would be complete without a nervy finish and that was the case when Welton pulled one back with 15 minutes to go. However, our coolest customer on the pitch was Harrison who marshalled his box expertly and mopped up any and all loose balls. The boys saw out the game to put themselves within touching distance of the championship and break Welton hearts.

MOTM - Joe, an outstanding first half display of clinical finishing brought Welton to heel. He had 3 shots in the game and scored 3 goals. Worked hard when not in possession and was a menace to the Welton back line. Another fairytale moment for the comeback kid.

MOTM - Harrison, a cool head, great anticipation and a commanding presence in the box. Nothing he could do about the three goals that went in but he did plenty in snuffing out Welton attacks with his reading of the game and bravery to drop on the ball at the feet of attackers.

Mid Lincs match day 11

Fishtoft v Immingham Pilgrims

Fishtoft 0 - 5 Pilgrims

A lovely little jaunt out to Boston to play the third team in the league Fishtoft.

If the boys were tired or rusty after missing another weekend of football, it didn’t show. They took control of the game from the first minute and didn’t let the plucky Fishtoft get a sniff of the ball for the entire match. The Pilgrims knocked the ball around with ease and despite the try hard nature of Fishtoft they simply couldn’t get near the mighty Pilgrims who had a swagger to the way they played. The first goal game after Noah had the awareness to play the ball back to Nicky waiting on the edge of the box to rifle home the first goal of the day. The Pilgrims were denied a second in quick succession after Joe finished from close range but a defender hooked the ball away despite it clearly crossing the line…. no VAR in the mid Lincs unfortunately. The second goal did inevitably arrive with Mason picking Louis who also rifled a shot in from the edge of the area.

The third goal arrived after Fishtoft accidentally fouled one of the Pilgrims and gave us a free kick just inside the attacking half. Unfortunately for Fishtoft they had no idea that Max has an absolute cannon of a right foot. He sent in an Exocet missile of a ball for Mason to tap home. The half came to an end with the Pilgrims in full control.

The second half began exactly where the first half ended. Total Pilgrim control with Fishtoft trying hard to stay in the game with a noble effort. The fourth goal arrived with Louis dancing through four close marking players with remarkable balance and footwork, that even drew compliments from the opposition players. On the conclusion of his run he squared to Nicky who smashed home the fourth of the game and his 46th of the season. Despite Fishtoft providing a sporting and fair effort they simply couldn’t live with the Pilgrims. This was emphasised by William playing a worldie of a cross into a recently glued back together Reece who deftly headed home for the fifth goal. 5-0 up and then nothing else happened after that. FT.

We thank Fishtoft for their hospitality, sportsmanship and allowing us the opportunity to come and earn the points. We wish them well for the rest of the season. We march on.

First MOTM Max who grew into the game and became a rock at the back. A wonderful assist from a deep free kick and some commanding ball winning tackles.

Second MOTM was William who simply owned every player he came up against. His footwork was exceptional but his assist for Reece’s goal was arguably the assist of the season so far.

Mid Lincs League Match Day 10

Immingham Pilgrims v Lowlands

Pilgrims 5 - 0 Lowlands

Dreary Winter conditions saw the Pilgrims return to league action and claim three points in a subdued but comfortable display.

The first half began with an unfamiliar face in goal with Captain Cam filling in for Harrison who was on international business this weekend. The Pilgrims took hold of the ball early on and found themselves in control and moving the ball freely. The opening goal came from a pin perfect corner delivery from Mason to find Max rising like a salmon on steroids to nod home. Next up the Louis and Nicky connection contributed to the second goal with Nicky coolly slotting home. The third goal was yet another Mason delivery and this time nodded home by Dennis. With these three quick fire goals it appeared the floodgates would open but credit to Lowlands they dug in and regrouped. The Pilgrims huffed and puffed but struggled to add to the scoreline either through the excellent Lowlands keeper or poor finishing.

Half time and 3-0 to the good at the break but arguably not playing to the best of our abilities.

The second half with the Pilgrims again seeing the majority of the ball but also struggling to create the opportunities the possession deserved. Poor passing and a tendency to hold on to the ball for far too long at crucial times contrived against us to keep the score down. After a good twenty minutes or so of toiling the boys did finally grab a fourth and fifth in quick succession with Nicky providing both for Louis to round out the scoring.

Job done but there needs to be a big improvement for next weeks top of the table clash. These boys are more than capable of upping their levels though and on their day they can be unplayable. Today was not one of those days but they still got the job done, a sign of a great team.

First MOTM was Mason after some hard running and a couple of decent deliveries led to two goals.

Second MOTM was Noah who didn’t put a foot wrong all game and provided plenty of running and overlaps to support the attack from defence.

Mid Lincs Invitational Cup - Second Round

Immingham Pilgrims v Wragby

Pilgrims 22 - 0 Wragby

After a stop start few weeks where teams were refusing to travel and play the Pilgrims resulting in a couple of awarded victories plus one contentious draw in a farmers field with 10 men, the boys were finally back to near full strength and back in action.

First of all a big shout out to the parents who arrived early to help dig the pitch out of the snow and make the lines visible ensuring we were able to play. We are one team 👏👏👏

Secondly, to Wragby. This was a difficult afternoon for them and yet they still turned up and wanted to play a game of football. Hats off to them as there are many in the league who have recently chucked the towel in and refused to travel for a game, teams who would rather go belly up surrendering the points and showing a weak mentality. A tough result for Wragby but they showed they are made of sterner stuff than those who sit higher in the league than them 👏.

First half in cold snowy and frostbite conditions the Pilgrims knew they had to still play football in these challenging elements to get back in their groove after the Ruskington robbery (it was never a penalty….. ) anyway, we are totally over that now…. The boys took to their arctic pitch and began putting in a devastating display of passing football, the interchanges were superb with the conditions soon being placed firmly to the back of their minds. The first three goals arrived in quick succession with all three assisted by Lou and finished by Nicky. Louis then added a fourth with a lovely solo run and finish by beating the three defenders and keeper with some deft footwork. The fifth goal arrived with the same Lou and Nicky connection that saw the first 3 fly in. Then our sixth goal was finished in style from a tight angle by our returning flying winger and fully rebuilt Joe after 14 months out with injury. A relief to all involved to see him smiling on a pitch again. Our ever reliable Noah playing in a full back role today laid on the next assist for Mason to finish coolly. Nicky then turned from poacher to provider laying on a finely weighted pass for the giant that is William to finish. A ninth goal flew in from the trusty Lou and Nick connection to conclude the half’s scoring but the game wasn’t just about the goals scored, it was about how they were created. The passing and movement from the boys was sublime at times. Interchangeable positions and fluid passing not only warmed the pitch up but set fire to the chances created statistics. A clinical display, Wragby were suffering but the Pilgrims didn’t show any mercy and remained scarily intense in the pursuit of a statement win after the Ruskington robbery that I’m totally over and not raging about….(celebrating a 1-1 draw against 9.5 Pilgrims?)

The second half kicked off and the Pilgrims were forced into a change as Reece who is having a fantastic season so far got the worst injury you can possibly get in weather like this… a heel stud full weight on his frozen toe… we’ve all been there and we all winced in pain. His game was done and it was a shame for him as he like all of the boys was having a great day. The boys had the luxury of being able to move players about into different positions and hand out extra experience to lads used to playing in a certain position week in week out. As Wragby retreated into the cold the Pilgrims became almost insatiable in their pursuit of goals. They were surgical in their passing and devastating in front of goal. Adding another 13 goals to the tally to record their biggest ever win since the journey began at U7. Captain Cam who had been solid all game claimed four assists in a classy second half performance and was unlucky not to claim a goal of his own. Nicky who is on a mission to out score entire clubs completed a treble hat trick. Louis who was unplayable today secured his hat trick along with seven assists. Our returning Joe also scored his first ever hat trick in competitive football in his official comeback game. Goals were added along the way by Max scoring an impressive brace with some devastating thunderbolt like shots. Mason and Will claiming a brace each and then the big one…. Hazza scoring his first open play goal in 84 years after relentless encouragement from the team to see him burst through the Wragby defence and finish decisively in the bottom left corner… we think he was aiming for top right but we’ll take it 🤣. Every single outfield player has now scored for Pilgrims this season and a special mention goes to Harrison in goal who had a lonely game today but we cannot play as a team if we don’t have players willing to fill every position 👏.

A fantastic performance in harsh conditions…. Winter is coming….. but so are the Pilgrims 💪

Men of the match -

First up is Nicky, how can you not be man of the match with 9 goals and 3 assists. These are crazy numbers from a monster of a player. Last season the team lacked goals, this season we have all of them. Nicky’s performance today wasn’t just about his clinical finishing but also his tenacity and work rate. You don’t put up the sort of numbers he is (44 goals so far) by being lazy and he was ferocious all day, bullying his opposing players into submission 👏.

Next up is Louis who was quite simply unplayable in midfield, netting a hat trick of his own but also adding 7 assists in a complete midfield performance. Another who is tenacious in winning the ball back but also has excellent balance and skill to make things happen. His two stand out goals were a mazy dribble and finish alongside a rocket of a 25 yarder top bins finish.

Our third man of the match and as briefly touched on earlier, our returning warrior Joe. Not only has he had his knee rebuilt with an ACL graft and double meniscus repairs but he’s had to overcome the psychological damage of that injury. There were times he thought he wouldn’t play again or at best not be at the level he’d just reached before the injury. Those doubts were unfounded as today not only did the knee hold up perfectly but his mind was at peace and he was loving his football all over again. All season he has been at every game as a spectator and watched the boys go mental…. Now it was his turn and he got in on the act emphatically scoring a career first hat trick but also showing bravery and determination to attack the space, win the ball back but also make the right decisions in possession. A massive welcome return to the warrior Pilgrim 👏👏👏🥹.

Match Day 9

Immingham Pilgrims v Fishtoft

Pilgrims 7 - 0 Fishtoft

Despite being down to ten men today the Pilgrims had enough quality to put in a mature professional performance.

The Pilgrims currently have a depleted squad with holidays and injuries taking its toll on the match day options and leaving us with only ten players. The boys aren’t scared of a challenge though and duly rolled their sleeves up to double their efforts and ensure the extra man never became an issue. After a goalless first 20 minutes with the Pilgrims in command but not finding the breakthrough they finally got the reward their dominance deserved and took the lead through a well struck Mason effort. With that the Pilgrims relaxed and the football became exhibition stuff. The second goal came from a deft touch by Nicky after a raking pass from William. This was then quickly followed by William getting on the score sheet himself after bundling through the defence with great feet and balance to then slot past the keeper. At half time the boys were 3-0 and cruising despite the man disadvantage. Plenty of hard work to do though as the pitch was heavy and sapping on the legs.

Second half began and the boys knew if they carried on in the same fashion as the first half then they could reclaim top spot in the league. Almost immediately after kick off a slice of fortune from the Pilgrims press forced an own goal out of Fishtoft to essentially put the game to bed. As Fishtoft heads went down the boys knew that their energy levels needed to stay high and to remain focused on the ball. With the opposition flagging the Pilgrims had plenty of time and space on the ball. Nicky turned provider and laid one off to Callum who confidently finished past the keeper. Then Nicky got his second of the game running on to a through ball from Reece and finishing from close range to take his tally to 34 for the season at the half way stage. The scoring wasn’t finished though as Mason popped up to get his second of the game and drill a fine finish to take the game to 7-0 in favour of the Pilgrims. This is how the game finished with the boys reclaiming top spot in the league despite playing a game less than second place.

MOTM - Our first man of the match was the pocket rocket with magic in his boots, William. Every touch was like it was cushioned in silk and his link up play with the right midfielder was superb. He defended resolutely and was just about unstoppable going forward on the dribble. He passed at all the right times bringing team mates into the game and only had the team’s interests at heart. Superb performance.

MOTM - Our second man of the match was the other half of that right side of the team in Noah. Mr dependable worked tirelessly with William and between them they bossed the entire left flank of Fishtoft. Noah’s determination to win the ball was only bettered by his distribution once he had it. Superb vision and awareness with a brace of assists to add to his tally.

Match Day 8

Immingham Pilgrims v Louth Town Green

Pilgrims 7 - 0 Louth

The Pilgrims were back in action at Blossom Way in what was a comfortable win despite a less than complete performance.

The first half got underway with the Pilgrims attacking early on and scoring within the first five minutes with Noah playing a well measured through ball into Nicky who finished confidently into the bottom corner. A few minutes later Reece picked out Mason to score the second goal of the game and send out a commanding message. Unfortunately the carrier pigeon sent to carry said message must have been struck by a rogue firework because what happened next was car crash football compared to the high standards these boys have set. All of a sudden the sharp passing and exploitation of space disappeared and was replaced with cringey drags and flicks that provided nothing more than ample opportunities to be tackled. It was telling that once the boys strayed from their path of sharp fast and intelligent football into this tippy tappy nonsense that they were unable to add another goal. With the coaches having multiple aneurysm’s on the sidelines it was time to get them in for half time.

The Pilgrims were overindulgent and wasteful in front of goal with some less than composed finishing from all players making the opposition keeper look like Lev Yasmin, whereas in reality he didn’t need to move off his spot as we either sent the ball straight to him or blazed wildly high or wide. Here’s to hoping the second half started better after a half time rocket.

It didnt.

Again, too many touches, too many flicks and drag backs. The Pilgrims had chances but tried to walk it into the net or showed a complete lack of composure in front of goal. Fortunately the 2-3 business days between their ears and brains for the HT message to be received finally elapsed and they started playing football again……. Then the inevitable happened. We started scoring goals again and began to look like the team that has taken this league by storm. Nicky grabbed his second, third and fourth goals of the game being assisted by Reece x 2 and Louis. A bit more gloss to the scoreline but we were still way down on our chance to goal conversion rate. As the better football came to the fore the chances created were constant and two more goals were added with Mason assisting Louis and finally Callum providing for Nicky for his fifth of the game and to round out the scoring. FT 7-0.

It is a testament to how well this team has bonded and played so far this season to still be so critical of a 7-0 win. Their bar is set high though, all through their own endeavours and if we’re up against a team that could have hurt us we could have been punished on more than one occasion. They’ll keep learning and they’ll keep getting meaner….. good teams can win playing great football, great teams can win either playing great football or the occasional helping of utter dross 🤣

These boys are a great team💪

MOTM - Noah, one of the few to keep his standards high. He never stopped for the cause and provided not only an assist but an unrelenting driving force both in attack and defence. Unlucky not to score today but covered every blade of grass.

MOTM - Reece, again one of the few to remain consistently high from last week. A hat trick of assists and an all round professional performance in not only winning the ball but also looking to use it correctly. His work ethic for the team is reflected by another game filled with multiple assists.

Match Day 7

Immingham Pilgrims v Ruskington Lions

Pilgrims 12 - 1 Lions

Another day in the Mid Lincs and another strong Pilgrims performance filled with outstanding football and possession play.

The first half began with the pilgrims getting straight on top from the first whistle. The boys won every contested ball and got the ball down to play some lovely passing football with overlaps and triangle play galore. The first goal came early on with Reece cutting the ball back for Mason to tap home. Then our prolific goalscorer Nicky got in on the assists and provided a knockdown header for Max to rifle home. Two goals up and the boys were looking devastating, almost ravenous for more. The football showed that and more slick play brought about the third, even though it was an OG the build up play was sublime from Callum. Mason then returned the favour for Reece who slotted home the fourth. Reece then became provider supreme and laid on two defence splitting passes in quick succession for Nikolay to finish. Lions then pulled a goal back after a rare and brief moment of Pilgrims lapsing in concentration. The half finished with the Pilgrims 6-1 up.

Second half Lions looked to come out and send long balls over the back line but Max and Cameron were more than equal at either nodding them away or bringing them down and passing into the midfield to begin playing through the lines. Young Dennis provided the assist to get our talisman Nicky up and running for the game who finished calmly past the onrushing keeper. The eighth came from a Louis knockdown to Dennis who finished with a beautiful driven lob from outside the area. Reece and Louis both took turns assisting Nicky to round out his hat trick. However the scoring wasn’t complete with Mason assisting Nicky twice for the eleventh and twelfth goals.

The game finished 12-1 with the Pilgrims in full control. Rarely troubled, the boys showed absolute professionalism and didn’t let their levels drop. The quality of football is superb with them all pulling together and playing for the badge, long may it continue. A team effort from an outstanding group of young men 💪💪💪.

MOTM - Louis who didn’t lose possession once throughout the whole game. He picked up assists and dominated the midfield. His touch and dribbling were out of this world but he is also picking passes at the right time driving the team into dangerous attacking positions.

MOTM - Reece, a goal and multiple assists in the first half, he was another who had full control over his area of the pitch. We saw the attacking excellence of Reece in the first half and then the full team spirit in the second when asked to play at full back, which is an unusual position for him. No complaining, no hesitation just full on application in a strange position. Exactly the Pilgrim attitude for the betterment of the team 💪.

Mid Lincs match day 6

Pilgrims 5 - 0 Welton

A long awaited home match at our new ground at Blossom Way. The pitch looked and played superb with the football to match provided by the Pilgrims.

From the very first whistle the Pilgrims took control of this top of the table clash. Welton were also coming into this game unbeaten and only two points behind the Pilgrims. The Pilgrims were in no mood to share dominance at the top of the league and while the football in the early stages was patient, they were in total control. Confidently stroking the ball around the pitch with the interchanges and communication between the players being of the highest calibre. The opening goal came through Nicky our monster of a centre forward who maintains his record of scoring in every game so far this season. Latching on to a ball from Louis he confidently smashed the opener past the Welton keeper. Soon after that William with a delightful overlapping run sent a deadly low ball across the box which Louis calmly slotted in first time. The Pilgrims always looked confident but after two quick fire goals they now looked menacing as well. The third duly followed with Harry also providing over lapping run to set up Reece for a close range finish. The boys went into the half time break three goals to the good.

The second half began in the same vein as the first and there were no shortages of excellent performances up and down the pitch. Noah ran his heart out for the cause and again provided a solid display that Welton couldn’t match. The midfield trio of Louis, Callum and Reece absolutely dominated midfield. The back line were consummate professionals and Hazza, William, Max and Cam were solid throughout. Mason provided trickery and drive on the left with Henley also getting in on the action to gain more valuable experience playing an age up. Harrison our no.1 was as cool as you like coming off his line and occupying himself by casually flicking the ball over onrushing attackers. With this level of performance it was only a matter of time before we put the game to bed. Reece smashed a 20 yarder into top bins with Callum also finding top bins with a sumptuous free kick.

This was a professional performance full of quality and maturity. An outstanding team performance. The boys look deadly 💪👌🔥

MOTM - First up was Captain Cam. He marshalled the line superbly and didn’t put a foot wrong winning everything in his area of operation and stepping out with the ball as required.

MOTM - Callum, dominated midfield won everything in the air and on the ground and finished his performance off with a superb free kick. A powerful performance.

Mid Lincs Match Day 5

The Pilgrims struggle to soar at RAF Waddington

Lowlands FC 1 - 7 Pilgrims

Today in blustery conditions and on a pitch best described as agricultural the boys had to grind out a win that the scoreline flatters. However, great teams can still carve out a result when they have an off day and these boys are certainly great.

The first half got off to a rocky start as both teams struggled to find a foothold in the blustery conditions. Lowlands took the lead through a highly contentious penalty. After Callum used shoulder to shoulder strength to win the ball in the box the referee inexplicably blew for a penalty. This wasn’t the first time those in attendance on both sides were left perplexed by the man in the middle. Lowlands converted the penalty and had their tails up against an out of sorts Pilgrims. The boys had their kick up the backside and tried to play football in forceful conditions. The game was frequently interrupted though by the sound of a whistle. Louis grabbed the equaliser with a goal of the season contender when a wickedly struck through ball bobbled over the on rushing keepers grasp. Play was then stopped for a free kick as one player made contact with another player. The boys started to take more of a commanding presence in midfield and this pressure lead to another contentious penalty, this time awarded to Pilgrims which Mason converted. Play was then stopped again for a free kick as a blade of grass was damaged by a player running over it. We respect the decision. Half time came with the Pilgrims 2-1 up but not good for it.

The second half began and then instantly stopped for a free kick as the ref forgot which car he drove. Anyway, the action continues and the Pilgrims finally began to display sharper football….. the game was then stopped again for a free kick as the referee remembered Princess Diana had died and he got sad. The action recommences with a quick fire brace of goals from Reece and Callum…. The game was then brought to a halt for a free kick as the referee forgot what the colour purple looked like…. Back to the action and the Pilgrims while still nowhere near top gear began to exert more pressure with Callum scoring a sublime half volley 20 yards out and Nicky getting his goal that his perseverance deserved. The game came to a shuddering halt again for a free kick after an earthworm was horribly stepped on…. Off we go again and William manages to fire in the seventh and final goal from the edge of the area. There was still time for another stoppage as the man in the middle blew for a free kick after forgetting he wasn’t actually a red arrow after spending five minutes running around with his arms outstretched.

Full time 7-1 to the Pilgrims, however despite the efforts of the weather and the space cadet with a whistle, Lowlands gave us our sternest test of the season so far.

Our MOTM today was Noah who offered 100% determination from the off both starting at full back and after moving into midfield. No such thing as a lost cause with Noah and when stepping into midfield he steadied what was becoming a nervy ship. His tenacity today put him out front for today’s award.
