Match Day 12 ⚽️

Immingham Pilgrims v Discoveries Typhoons

Pilgrims 0 - 5 Tyhoons

The curtain closed for the season. A game that had little meaning table-wise as all other fixtures had been played and no more places could be gained or lost.

That being said, in the first half Pilgrims were set up to go for the win. The half started evenly, with both teams struggling to create anything meaningful in the opening 10 minutes. A few good breakaways followed from both teams, none of which ended with either keeper having much work to do. The half ended in a stalemate, with both defences on top.

After a first half that we were very satisfied with, going toe-to-toe with the team sitting second in the league, some half time changes followed, along with Dalaigh ditching the gloves to allow Bobby, the smallest player on the pitch, to go in goal... 👀

With most of the team now in unfamiliar positions as part of a bit of end of season fun, the second half kicked off and it didn't take long for Typhoons to capitalise. An unfortunate moment saw the Pilgrims concede the first goal out of nowhere but again, we approached this half differently from the first and heads didn’t go down.

The floodgates soon opened as the boys couldn't deal with the endless amounts of crosses into the box, with several corners being converted but it was interesting seeing the boys adjusting to alien positions.

A few more breakaways every now and then between the goals was all that Pilgrims could muster up in a half that was purely experimental.... Full Time.

The first half was the test and they passed with flying colours, with Typhoons coaches recognising how much the team has come along since the start of the season.

MOTM - Dylan. Deployed as a winger today, for a good 5 minutes he was the only Pilgrims player to touch the ball. Starting with one of his mad runs, then getting tackled, then winning the ball back, going on another run, then giving the ball away on purpose just so he could put in another crunching tackle again. He was all over the pitch today.

MOTM - Freddie. Zero goals conceded in the first half and Freddie was a big part of it. From big headed clearances to some Vidic-esque no nonsense challenges, he barely put a foot wrong in the heart of the defence. Thoroughly deserved.

Roll on the summer tournaments and next season 💪⚽️🔥🫶

Match Day 11 ⚽️

Immingham Pilgrims v Disco Bears

Pilgrims 1 - 3 Bears

The reverse fixture that was reversed back to playing away as our pitch was still unplayable.

A few tweaks from the 3-1 loss to Disco Bears a few weeks ago, a game in which the Pilgrims struggled in midfield. There were no such struggles this time around as we'll soon touch on.

The game was end to end in the first half, 3 clear cut chances to score in a half where Bears were limited to only a few half chances themselves, scoring 2 scrappy goals in an otherwise even half. The half ended questionably while in a 3 on 1 Pilgrims counter attack, which would would have undoubtedly provided the 4th clear cut chance of the half.

After a few more half time changes, the second half kicked off and Bears soon added their 3rd. Nobody had noticed the player drift to the back post from a corner and the ball found it's way through everyone for the unmarked player to knock in the 3rd.

Underservedly down 3 goals, heads started to drop, but after a few more changes and some more words of encouragement from Coach Sophie, the boys soon got themselves back into the game. A chip over the defence, was raced onto by Connor, sprinting from just inside his own half to latch onto the ball and thunder a shot off the cross bar which bounced over the line and out again... But it wasn't to be.

This was the encouragement that was needed as the goal eventually came. More clever wing play from Bobby, who had been moved onto the left wing, as he dribbled past several Bears players but that final ball to Oliver was just out of reach. Fortunately, the keeper spilled the save right onto Oliver's toes for him to tap in. There was confusion as it originally seemed as if Oliver was judged to have kicked the ball out of the keepers hands. VAR checked and the confusion cleared up. Goal given.

The boys couldn't capitalise any further on the the momentum they had, with the game petering out and ending in a 3-1 loss.

Overall we were very happy with the performance, everyone played well and on another day those chances get taken, dangerous attacks don't get inexcusably stopped, legitimate onside goals stand and we leave with the 3 points.

MOTM - Bobby. A lack of confidence in recent weeks but Bobby was back and in his preferred position on the wing and he didn't disappoint, using his size and low centre of gravity to his advantage to beat defenders with some brilliant runs. Unlucky not to score today.

MOTM - Lukas. Instructed to sit in the gap in front of the defence today, a position that Bears exploited last time around. There were no such exploitations this time as his unlimited amount of energy and willingness to get stuck in provided the defence with that extra protection that was often needed, while also having the awareness to fill in at left back when Dylan went on his crazy runs up the pitch.

Match Day 10

Disco Bears v Immingham Pilgrims

Bears 3 - 1 Pilgrims

The game last Sunday was played on potentially the only grass pitch not under water resulting in a Pilgrims performance of two halves, we sank in the first half and swam in the second.

The first half the Pilgrims came out looking a little timid and reluctant to engage, this resulted in the Bears comfortably setting up camp in our half and sending wave after wave of attack towards Dalaighs goal. To Dalaighs credit he was making save after save but eventually the pressure became too much and Bears found their way through. Three goals scored in a fullest half where the Pilgrims were playing reactive and panicked football instead of imposing our style and presence on to the game.

After a halftime reaffirmation of who we are and a cast iron promise not to lose the second half the boys emerged with more bite and tenacity. The bears still applied pressure and looked dangerous on the break but at least we looked like we wanted to challenge and looked to make things happen. A solid rearguard performance by Thomas and Freddie enabled our wide players to start taking advantage of the open space on the wings. Connor, Blake, Lewis and Brody all looked dangerous when able to take advantage of said space. The Pilgrims pulled a goal back when Thomas sent a looping ball out to the wing for Brody to latch on to and after cutting inside was able to finish smartly in the far corner. Bears still looked to add to their lead though and had periods where they peppered Dalaighs goal with shots but to no avail. The boys kept their promise and won the second half, they left with a feeling they could have potentially got more from the game if they played both halves in the manner of the second.

MOTM - Dalaigh, some superb saves in both halves. His reflexes and reach have developed brilliantly this season along with a more powerful kicking repertoire he is a rock at the back for the Pilgrims. Usually always an 8 out of 10, today he deserved his award.

MOTM - Blake, by far not the biggest of players on the team but after the whole team showed a timid first half performance they were all asked to show some desire and legal aggression in the tackle. Blake took this to heart and singled out the biggest player on their team who was built like a rugby player and went at him….. Blake was flattened…. However, he showed the heart and desire to have a go, listened to the instructions and then got up and asked if he could have another go. You can’t coach heart like that.

Match day 8

Grant Thorold v Pilgrims

GT 1 - 1 Pilgrims

Finally a game for the U12’s Colts after a winter break of roughly 108 years….

A severely depleted squad rocked up to play GT with a bare nine players available.

The first half got underway with GT applying the early pressure and Pilgrims struggling to gain a foothold. GT scored with a break after a missed clearance opportunity and managed to slide the ball past a stranded Dalaigh. With a defensive reshuffle the Pilgrims looked more solid at the back and began to start competing but again struggled to make anything stick up front. The half petered out on a pitch that left a lot to be desired, but at least we were playing.

The second half got underway with another tactical shuffle and the Pilgrims easily looked the stronger team and began creating chances and winning loose balls through the midfield. A mazy run from Oliver Smaller resulted in him getting into a crossing position, he delivered a perfect cross to Elis to tap home from close range to level the game. With the equaliser the Pilgrims looked the more likely to go on and win but just couldn’t find the killer touch to convert a couple of gilt edged chances. GT weren’t out of the game though and on the rare occasions they got forward in the second half they found Dalaigh in imperious form who denied them with two smart saves.

The boys that turned up today though were a credit and fully deserved not to be beaten, they battled hard and fought all the way to the last whistle which ended the game at 1-1.

First MOTM was Elis for a workman like performance covering yards up and down the pitch but also choosing the right times when to carry the ball and move the ball on. Thoroughly deserved his goal to rescue a point.

Our second MOTM was Lewis who battled tirelessly in winning possession and then also having the bravery to carry the ball forward when nothing else was an option. He provided plenty of defensive cover in the course of putting in one of his best performances in a Pilgrims shirt.

Match Day 8

It’s been 84 years since our last game….

Immingham Pilgrims v Discoveries Mariners.

Pilgrims 0 - 3 Mariners

A depleted injury and illness ravaged Pilgrims side could only field 8 players for today’s fixture.

The game kicked off in cold, miserable and swamp like conditions with the expected flow of traffic going against Pilgrims. Playing against a team that deserves to be a division higher it was always going to be a tough day for the threadbare Pilgrim boys. Being the man down they had to work twice as hard all over the pitch and they provided a strong wall to break wave after wave of Mariners attacks. Their undoing was in the cruellest manner as a well timed tackle in the box ricocheting off the attacker and squirming past the onrushing Dalaigh. Any other day and twice on normal Sundays that tackle results in the ball going away from our goal but today we were just unlucky. The second Mariners goal was an OG with Dalaigh initially making a smart save but unable to keep the ball out of the net as he fell backwards with the momentum of the initial stop. The half ended 2-0 to Mariners but the Pilgrims could feel hard done by as they hadn’t exactly been carved open…. Despite the man advantage.

The second half got underway with the Pilgrim’s having a slight formation tweak that allowed a bit more presence in midfield at the expense of the lone striker Connor. This change actually resulted in more breaks forward for the Pilgrim’s as the fuller midfield were able to win more balls back and give us something to chase. Connor was extremely unlucky with a long range free kick that almost found the top corner and secondly bursting into the box he was unfortunate to get the ball caught in his feet on the boggy surface before getting his shot away. Encouraging signs going forward for the 8 Pilgrims. The third goal came from another OG despite cutting out the initial cross the ball bounced around awkwardly and then found its way into the net from a Pilgrims boot. At this point Pilgrims had outscored Mariners 2 to 1. The game was always going to be difficult today but the boys battled bravely and defiantly against a full squad. Each Pilgrim can hold their head high. Thomas and Freddie were monsters at the back with Lukas providing energy and determination. Gabe chased every ball down and ran himself into the ground alongside Oliver whose presence in midfield gave Mariners little time. Connor gave them cause for concern whenever he lined a shot up and also ran the hard lonely yards as a solitary isolated striker.

As it happens, for the Mariners title push, it was a good job they played with a man extra….. on to the next.

MOTM - Dalaigh, a player that is always solid in goal and it often gets taken for granted that he’ll always produce a save. Today though he was determined not to let Mariners have it easy. Unlucky with the OG against him but other than that every clean strike they hit, he was more than a match for. A ruthless energy this boy possesses when he’s on the other side of the white line. Mr reliable was Mr worldie today. 🌍🤜🤛

MOTM - The slightest frame on the pitch belongs to Elis but in that frame beats the heart of a lion. He may not have the weight to bully some of the bigger boys off the ball but what he lacks in kilograms he more than makes up for in sheer bloodymindedness. There’s no lost cause for Elis and he epitomised spirit today, fighting for every ball and running every yard. 💪🤜🤛

Match Day 7

Immingham Pilgrims v GCW

Pilgrims 2 - 0 GCW

First up, both teams marked Remembrance Sunday impeccably with the last post playing from the centre circle over a silent field to honour those who fell to ensure we can enjoy days like today.

Back to back wins for the young Pilgrims and an impressive clean sheet to cap a great display.

A slow start in the first half for the first ten minutes saw the Pilgrims remain in their shell and often second to every ball. However, after some gentle cajoling from the sidelines, the boys soon pulled their socks up. With a new found urgency the boys began to take control in the midfield and create chances going forward. The positions the Pilgrims found themselves in were good but just lacked that final third composure to make the transitions count. GCW were working the wings hard particularly down the right and the boys had to double up on a couple of dangerous players but they carried out this task exceptionally and Dalaigh didn’t have many saves to make in the first half and spent more time as a sweeper keeper gathering lose balls or sending them back from where they came. With a solid base to build from our attacking trio we’re finding more space and applying sustained pressure. It was this pressure that counted as Connor forced an error from the defender and then latched on to the ball left side of the pitch and then coolly finished over the onrushing keeper from range. 1-0 at the break and the Pilgrims were looking to make this stick.

Second half the boys were playing some nice inter changing football with defenders stepping out with the ball and providing extra attacking options when needed. One through ball found Oliver D in space and while running through in goal he was brought down for a free kick at distance. Up stepped Oliver who rattled in a powerful free kick from range to make the game 2-0 and add breathing space to an already assured performance. The game wasn’t completely done as corners needed to be defended and they were defended well, also Dalaigh was called upon late in the game to pluck a ranged shot out of the air that was heading into his top corner. Final whistle and the Pilgrims win 2-0.

A great squad performance where every player contributed important moments 💪👊.

MOTM - Thomas who was not only defensively strong and assured but also stepped out with the ball well to relieve any pressure on the back line.

MOTM - Elis, a complete performance in midfield. His feet are always excellent but it was his battling qualities and using every ounce of his frame to win the ball back that stood him apart today.

Match Day 6

Clee Town Meggies v Immingham Pilgrims

Meggies 1 - 3 Pilgrims

The return leg in the league against our old friends Meggies saw the Pilgrims come out on top in another closely fought and hugely entertaining game.

The Pilgrims started this game looking for their first points of the season. After some close games losing by the odd goal and with the application not quite being efficient enough, it finally clicked for the boys today. This game was end to end and played in an excellent spirit by two teams who know each other well. The Pilgrims managed to grab the opening goal after some outstanding wing play from Bobby who cut the ball back for Connor to tap in the easiest goal of his career from a yard out. A great team goal. Meggies were not to be bowled over though and the defence had to remain stout in the face of Meggies pressure with Dalaigh being called upon as a safe pair of hands. The Pilgrims rearguard were superb with Freddie, Thomas and Lukas providing not only outstanding defending but also giving the Pilgrims the opportunity to build from the back. The second goal came after Elis’ played a lovely little slide pass into Dylan who then beat two players to get into the area and rifle a shot past the onrushing keeper. The half ended with the Pilgrims 2-0 to the good but very much still in a contest.

Second half and the boys looked to keep the levels high and the concentration dialled in but a swift counter from Meggies resulted in a goal being pulled back and the potential for nerves to creep in. The Pilgrims stuck to their task though and defended well when they needed to and pressed the attack at the right times. The goal that took the pressure off again came from the determined Bobby driving into the box and in a repeat of the first goal he found Connor to smash home from close quarters.

The game finished 3-1 to the Pilgrims but this was a real contest of the highest order and it takes two teams to put on a spectacle such as this. A big thank you to Meggies who as ever are an absolute joy to share a pitch with. Always competitive and always played in the right spirit.

MOTM - Connor who not only grabbed two goals today but put in a shift full of energy and desire. He drove the team forward with his ball carrying and always looked to be an option off the ball. His communication during the game was also excellent.

MOTM - Oliver Smaller, moved forward into a CDM role to shield the defence he was outstanding in winning the ball, positioning himself well and playing brilliant balls forward. A hard working and determined display filled with quality.

MOTM - Freddie, an awesome performance from young Freds who was a monster at the heart of defence. Barely anything got past him and his desire to win the ball was immense. All heart and determination today.

Today we had a very special guest coach in PC Meg. Generously donating her time to come down and give the boys a different perspective. The boys were put through their paces with fitness circuits, drills and fun games finished with a match. Meg was fantastic with a group of kids she’s only meeting for the first time and commanded their attention from the first to last minute. All smiles at the end but not very many smiles during 🤣

A session full of hard work and application. A big thanks from the U12’s to Meg for her efforts today 💪🔥👏👏👏

Match Day 5

GCW v Pilgrims

GCW 3 - 2 Pilgrims

A battling performance ends in heartbreak for the Pilgrims.

The first half got off to a solid start for the Pilgrims who looked strong and held shape well. Enjoying plenty of the ball they just lacked a cutting edge to make the early dominance count. Of course, with this season being the way it is we were undone by a through ball that allowed their striker to run on and slot the opener in. Heads dropped a little and GCW added a second through an unfortunate Pilgrim own goal after a low ball was played across the box. Hope was restored when Conner deftly lobbed the keeper from the edge of the box to grab his first for the season, a sublime finish that he thoroughly deserved. Half time the Pilgrims seemed to have restored their earlier dominance.

Second half began with the Pilgrims flying out of the traps to try and get parity in the game. Again, the boys looked good on the ball and played some nice interchanging football, this time we had a cutting edge in Bobby who scored with an instinctive finish from the edge of the area. At this point it only looked like the Pilgrims were going to go on and get the win. However, this season has been cruel so far and a counter at pace undid the back line to let GCW score a goal in the dying minutes that turned out to be the winner.

A tough loss but despite going two down the boys showed spirit to get back into the game and arguably deserved to win. Tough times but we’ll weather the storm. Steady seas never made a skilled sailor. The boys have adapted new tactics and these will pay off.

MOTM - Thomas was instrumental in implementing these new tactics and not a thing got past him today. Physicality and dominance at the back.

MOTM - Elis, a tireless performance operating up and down the left wing filled with pace and skill. A dynamo on the left side of the attack.

Match day 4

The Pilgrims are away at Bradley in the Crofts League.

Discoveries Typhoons 3 - 0 Pilgrims

Windy conditions on a wide open field made a challenging day for football.

The Pilgrims looked to attack this game in a far more assertive manner than the meek surrender of last week against the same opposition. Initially the signs were good with some fleeting moments of football coming to the fore. However, as is the trend this season we inexplicably shoot ourselves in both feet and then walk over broken glass at crucial moments. A lapse in concentration resulted in the opening goal for Typhoons. Pilgrims did come into the game more and more from that point on and were starting to pin Typhoons back. A lack of composure in the final third and being guilty of taking too many unnecessary touches resulted in promising moves petering out. There was more desire on display though and the boys came into half time believing there was something to be had from this game.

Second half…. Again, the self destruct button was pushed with indecision and hesitancy at the back from a corner resulted in a tap in for Typhoons. A third goal followed for Typhoons to finish the scoring, Pilgrims did put up a bit of resistance and at least tried to apply themselves to the game and task at hand. The boys aren’t far off from these teams in terms of ability but at the moment they tend to be their own worst enemy. The potential is there, it just needs patience. They can play great football they just need to believe it can be played and forced upon other opponents instead of passively standing by.

We’ll get there, we’ve got time on our side 👍💪

Today’s MOTM was Lewis who came on at half time and from that moment on showed full desire and determination to impact the game. He chased down opposition players and also won the ball back on numerous occasions to bring the Pilgrims further up the pitch. Well done today.

Immingham Pilgrims match day 3.

Discoveries Typhoons 4 - 0 Pilgrims

Saturday the boys were away in the cup to Typhoons.

Looking to kickstart their season after some narrow defeats and up and down performances the boys went into this feeling like anything was possible.

It wasn’t.

Another first half surrender with the boys being too timid and nice against a team that had no objections against using the dark arts and getting away with heavy handed pushing and pulling. This is fine and all part of football. However, our boys let themselves be bullied, second to every ball or taking too many unnecessary touches and allowing themselves to be tracked down and tackled. The decisive play from the first weekend of touch, pass and move was unfortunately lacking again this week. They entered the half time break down 4-0. Four goals that were ultimately very preventable.

Second half there was a bit of a response from the boys as they came out with a bit more fight and refused to allow themselves to be bullied.. No real clear cut chances were created for the Pilgrims in the second half but the greater fight shown was a positive.

The game finished 4-0 with all the damage done in the first half. However, a stronger resistance in the second half left the boys wanting to have another crack at this team next week.

MOTM - Bobby was today’s stand out, one of the few who was prepared to put his body on the line throughout the match and despite being one of the smaller players on the pitch he wasn’t afraid to mix it with the big boys. Also denied a stonewall penalty for reasons completely unknown to any rational thinking football mind.

We’ll go again 💪
