One trout had me scratching my head during this incredible mayfly hatch on the River Frome. It refused several different patterns despite feeding confidently on the surface. Then on went a large Size 10 Thomas Yellow Mayfly... and within moments the trout couldn't resist.

A great reminder that sometimes matching the hatch isn't enough — you also need the right size, profile and presentation.

What fly would you have tried first?

The River Frome in Dorset putting on one of nature’s greatest spectacles — a stunning mayfly hatch on a beautiful spring evening. When the mayflies are dancing and the trout are looking up, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be. Moments like these remind us why fly fishing is so special.

Mayfly hatch on the Dorset Frome, church bells peeling in the distance and wild trout rising into the evening light. Quintessential English spring fly fishing at its very best.

Late May magic in Somerset 🎣 Brown trout taking a Wulff Mayfly Variant or an Adam Dry Fly as the river comes alive. There’s something special about seeing fish rise confidently to a dry fly at this time of year. Surface takes never get old. Head to our bio for more on the flys. We only use strong and reliable hooks made by Mustad of Norway.

A perfect day on an English chalk stream chasing wild trout. Fish came steadily to a Blue Dun dry fly and a White Wulff Mayfly, with some exciting surface takes in crystal-clear water. Days like these remind you why matching the hatch matters. 🎣

Early May magic on the River Frome 🎣
Six trout and a beautiful grayling to hand, with the biggest fish smashing a Duracell jig nymph. The rest couldn’t resist parachute hawthorns and grannom dries during a proper spring hatch. Days like this are what it’s all about.

A proper little gem of a day on a tiny stream off the Tone in Somerset 🌿🎣
Three beautiful brown trout to hand, with the best going around a pound and a quarter — all fooled by a grannom dry fly.

Small water, big rewards. Proof that you don’t need width to find quality fish… just the right fly and a bit of patience.
