Where do I start with this 🤔 On one hand I don't want to get ahead of myself as it'll be a long season, but the other side of me is screaming - BOOM 💥 The Aces have arrived......

Look, it's early days, I'm not daft (well not totally) - but credit where credits due.
Their manager spoke with me before the game, they have been at this level for a while and were competing at the top a couple of seasons ago, and whilst they've lost a couple of players, I thought it was going to be a good test of where we are at.

After a class warm up, and intense pre-match talk, we had the boys wound up like coiled springs. They were absolutely electric in that opening half hour.

Jack Sproat making his competitive debut was superb, and followed instructions to absolutely set about their defense at every opportunity. He did mint winning possession, then worked it well and found Tyler in the box to slot home.

We dominated possession and looked to get in time and again. Set piece king Alistair Loudens superb delivery from a corner found Sealey free to power home a header to double the Aces lead.

Then the Pièce de résistance - Charlie Napier teed up summer recruit Laiton Fleming 30 yards out, and he hit a peach of a half volley to send old Jürgen almost dancing down the sidelines, but then remembered the old fractured ribs.
The funniest thing though was Charlie wheeling away saying 'I assisted that' 🤣

Second half we lost a bit of intensity and they grew into the game, and they threatened to get back into it, but James' handling and shot stopping was superb today and frustrated them.
Sonny then picked it up in the middle of the park and played a lovely through ball to Carter, who went through and finished emphatically.
4-0 and we were in dream land.

They pulled one back, but game management from Sealey, Laiton & Zack was superb.
One sour point was Charlie Napier's tackle on their player who had to go off after being halved, resulting in a yellow.
But he was superb today, and is making that left back position his own.

All the boys were class today, we won't get carried away......one game at a time and all that.
But for now, we'll enjoy the victory, and be proud of this underdogs tale - from Division 8 to Division 1, and we look like we belong, and we are THE ACES 🔥

Tomorrow we go again, it's going to be tough, but we've thought that every season. One thing I promise - we'll be absolutely relentless.

This morning the Ace's headed to the Greatham FC tournament at Hartlepool and should have been in a bullish mood with the group draw. The boys were told there was no reason if they played to their ability that they shouldn't comfortably finish top of the group and look forward to a semi final spot.

The day started with an emotional minutes silence for the two Police officers killed on duty last week. Extra tough for myself as I knew both Tom and Matty. Matty like myself was a coach at grassroots level and loved his football ❤️

Tonka stepped in to assist today in John's absence and it was greatly appreciated. The warmup was sharp and after a great opening team talk we expected the boys to deliver. Unfortunately, and by the boys own admissions all 3 group games weren't good enough and we were very fortunate to catch a break with a 2nd placed deciding penalty shoot out. 5 boys stepped up and wanted to take penalties and all delivered with 5 perfect spot kicks.

That led us into a semi final with Norton who we will get to know this season as they are in our league. The boys were asked to regain some pride and go out to show both Norton and their own parents what we can do. The boys stepped up massively and deserved to win the game in normal time. Jack had a couple of good chances as did Tyler and Archie put a point blank header from an Alistair free kick straight at the keeper.

Another penalty shoot out beckoned with the same 5 lads who stepped up earlier doing so again. Was always going to be tough against the districts goalkeeper and two great saves off Archie and Jack sent the Aces home.

All in all we have to take some positives from no defeats. Some excellent performances today by all of the boys and I can't knock the effort. Sometimes we just have to do the easy things like winning headers and tackles and the quality of our football will do the rest.

We have to remember we were missing Sonny, Bobby and Carter which left a massive hole and reduced the changes we could make to freshen things up.

My player of the tournament was Jack, it's his first tournament for us and 1st real taste of competitive football in the Aces shirt. I believe he will be an asset moving forward and gives us something totally different at the top end of the pitch.

Big session needed on Tuesday evening before a tough opening game away to Northallerton next Sunday in what will be the 1st test of top division football ⚽

BREAKING - JUST IN!

St Mary's Aces crash out the Greatham Open Cup Semi Finals on penalties, having gone the whole tournament undefeated!

With Old Jürgen still out injured with his poorly ribs, Tonka stepped up to support Craig for the young Aces valiant efforts.

We love to go through tournaments unbeaten;
Unfortunately we look like we love to lose on penalty shootouts too.
