Huntingdon Canoe Club

Huntingdon Canoe Club Huntingdon Canoe Club is a friendly, social and inclusive community club, encouraging healthy paddle sports activity. subject to availability.

The club has been in existence for over 30 years and is affiliated to British Canoeing. We are based at Hinchingbrooke Country Park. Our interests vary from sheltered flat water to touring paddles both in the local area and further afield, kayak surfing, playboating and white-water river running. We paddle all manner of craft such as SUP, canoes and kayaks and we have canoes, kayaks and sit on top

s to try at the club. We have a variety of boats so members can try different boats before they choose to buy one. We run various trips throughout the year and our past trips have included; touring the Ouse, River Tryweryn & River Dee in North Wales, Symonds Yat, Holme Pierrepont, Nene White-water Centre, River Dart, River Severn and various beaches in Devon, Cornwall and Norfolk! We welcome young paddlers but we do encourage parents to participate on the water to enable the whole family to enjoy water sports activities. We also run some social events throughout the year where non-paddling partners and family are also welcome. We have sessions at Huntingdon swimming pool throughout the Autumn and Winter. Our pool sessions focus on preventing capsize and what to do in case of capsize including paddle rolls and basic rescues but we do run the occasional taster session in the pool. Wednesday night is our main coaching night during the Summer months and paddlers that are competent in the fundamentals are welcome to join us on Saturday mornings all year round. If you have never paddled before, or only paddled a little, within the club we have qualified coaches and experienced paddlers and leaders who can take you from the Start Award on the very start of your journey as a learner on your very first session through to the Discover Award where you will be discovering the fundamentals of paddling. The club can also arrange higher level courses outside the club with club associated coaches. The club can supply safety kit such as buoyancy aids and helmets and has basic kit to borrow including boats, paddles, spray-decks, etc. Please visit our website to to book on an upcoming course or contact us to register your interest for when a course is available. If you are an experienced paddler interested in paddling with us, please visit our website to view options regarding membership and to get in touch. If you are a qualified coach/leader interested in volunteering please message us to arrange a chat with our coaches.

Cooler days don’t mean the adventures have to end! Here’s how to gear up for autumn paddling so you can stay warm and dry all season 🍂

✅ Swap your rash vest for a thermal base layer
✅ Wear a cag over your base layers — it will keep you dry and block the wind chill
✅ Switch your shorts for neoprene trousers
✅ Planning to paddle right through autumn and winter? A dry suit is a bigger investment, but it will keep you warm and dry throughout all seasons
✅ Pogies, neoprene mitts or gloves, and boots will help you stay warm and paddling for longer
✅ If kayaking, a spray deck will keep you dry and lock the heat in
✅ Don’t forget a hat
✅ A changing robe will help you stay warm when you get off the water too

☀️ Enjoying time on the water in the sunshine this weekend? If you're paddling on rivers or canals in England and Wales, you’ll likely need a waterways licence.

💡 But what is it? A waterways licence, also known as a river licence, is a permit required to paddle on many managed waterways in England and Wales. It contributes towards the maintainance and repairs of these waterways.

If you don’t have one, you could be fined up to £1,000 by the Navigation Authority.

The good news is, the waterways licence is already included in your Paddle UK membership. You get:
✅ Access to over 4,500km of managed waterways
✅ Coverage for all major authorities, including Environment Agency, Canal & River Trust , Broads Authority and more
✅ A digital membership card sent straight to your phone
