Great day of squash at OneLeisure Huntingdon. The 2024 squash club championships lived up to its reputation as 'probably' the most prestigious title in Cambridgeshire squash, if not the world.
The competition featured four, yes four, international players in the draw, all potential olympians for when squash graces the games in 2028.
An inclusive, possibly ingenious format meant 15 men and women played out 30 matches of exciting squash in one afternoon, with all players having four matches.
Turkish national champion Mumin, and defending champion and Portuguese u19 no 1 Diego Pita were the pre-tournament favourites for the main mixed competition. These young guns had a few of the club legends to contend with. Marco P, Dan, Alistair, Matt, and former club champion John, all deluding themselves that they were at the required level to mix it with the best.
Into this volatile mix, the ladies contingent Michella, Ana and Claire played some great squash, with Michella ranking highly in the finishing order and taking the ladies title.
Special mention too for youngster Kieran, who started the season at number five for the 2nd team but showed incredible improvement to beat all his senior teammates.
Congratulations to Diego for retaining his title after a great final with Malik. Thanks to all the players who took part and Alistair for the prizes.
Thanks also to Huntingdonshire District Council and all the staff, thanks for the support this year. Squash is a great game and with the Olympics around the corner in 2028, it's a great time to encourage participation and invest in local squash facilities for this newest Olympic sport.
