‼️ HELP ‼️ | SAMPHIRE PICKER | The last few years a top bloke called Ady has been picking and delivering samphire into us almost daily. This year he’s unfortunately not doing it 😔 And with samphire being quite a bespoke item, we don’t have an endless list of suppliers. As such if you are able to supply, or know someone that could please message me direct on here! 🙏

THE NEW SPORTS PAVILION!

What is it, what does it look like - and how you can help
In this Special Edition Newsletter we will explain:

What we are building
Why we need it
What we have done so far
Who is involved at the moment
Plans for the future
Most importantly - HOW YOU CAN HELP!

Firstly - what are we trying to build - Here are the plans, planning consent on the final design was granted on 14th August 2024
And for those of you who (like us!) may find it difficult to understand plans, here are two images, one aerial of what the pavilion will look like.

We should also thank Jason Law at this stage for the huge amount of work he has put into this project, at no charge, to get it going.

So, why do we need a new pavilion? Can't we just use the Main Hall? What is wrong with the old pavilion?
We do we need a New Pavilion?

The success of the Village Hall itself

All the successful events from quiz nights, art exhibitions, soup & sandwich lunches, parties, yoga, pilates. FABS (to name some of our activities), means that the main hall itself has little extra capacity and cannot be used for our expanding Sports facilities.

Another success is undoubtedly the Cricket Club

With four Senior sides, our first senior female player (Poppy) in the seconds, and a nascent women's softball team that we hope will lead to a full women's hard ball cricket team. We have a growing number of youngsters training with TCC weekly and we seem to be making progress in converting these to hard ball cricket as teenagers. All of which puts pressure on facilities - and particularly where there are mixed teams of men / women / juniors (anyone under the age of 18 is considered a junior for safeguarding purposes). We must have separate, appropriate facilities.

But the new pavilion is most definitely NOT just for cricket.

We already have a thriving Thornham Tennis Club, and part of the 'Phase Two' after the pavilion is built is to expand our racket sports - maybe a second tennis court or even a Padel Court. The new pavilion will be available for use by anyone playing tennis and will provide changing rooms, toilets and tea / coffee facilities.

With our two football goals often used for casual football matches, we can offer the new pavilion for changing rooms, drinks and even meals.

Jason has also designed the pavilion so that it can accommodate various indoor sports groups such as:
Indoor Short Mat Bowls - for the bowls club in the winter
Exercise Classes - when the hall is being used, this will prevent cancellations
New gym classes - we have interest from within the village to provide a more weights / strength / aerobic orientated class

And finally - other community activities

We are considering using the New Pavilion for perhaps regular drop in coffee mornings, and even perhaps as a Friday night social club - with a bar and darts board etc. Something for the community, a place to meet and catch up? If you have any thoughts on this we would love to hear from you.

What's wrong with the Old Pavilion?

Much as we love it - especially those of us who moved it by hand from the old Playing Field some 15 years ago - the wooden pavilion is over 40 years old and sadly no longer fit for our purposes. Thornham Cricket Club have worked hard to keep it operational for the last few years, but the floor is rotting away and it is now beyond economic repair.

Never fear though - it is going to a good home and we are having a farewell party for it - see below and Save The date:
September 8th 2024
Who's working on this and what have we done so far?

We have a very active Committee for the New Sport Pavilion:

Stephen Bett - Chairman
Billy King-Harman - Secretary and TVHPF Trustee
John Warham (TVHPF Trustee)
Jason Law (TVHPF Trustee)
Andy Arnold
Peter Herbert
Stephanie Mocatta

The Committee has worked extremely hard to get this project off the ground and:
Designed, adapted and agreed - and got planning consent for the design (thanks again Jason)
Done Groundwork Surveys, received formal quotations from three builders and settled on a preferred design - Many thanks here to Andy Arnold who has been our QS and is acting as Project Manager, on a pro bono basis.
Started the Grant applications - we have been successful in raising £115,000 so far and are waiting to hear on a major CiL application to KLWNBC, with other applications ready to be submitted after that decision has been received
Begun specific fundraising activities - Sportsman's Dinner and JustGiving site - more below

We are ready to start the build after the last cricket match of the season, on about 9th September. We may not have raised all the funding required at this stage, but we will have enough to make a water tight building and will, if necessary, continue fund raising through 2025 to complete it.
And Now - The Important Bit!

How can you help?

The total build cost is estimated at around £290,000. Much of the Fit out, Architects Fees and QS fees are being provided Pro Bono by Jason, Andy and various members of the cricket club - this probably will amount to saving for TVHPF of around £40,000 of costs.

But we still have a long way to go!

So if you can help us with any of the following please do:
