Journey to Swim🏊♀️…Bike 🚴♀️…Run🏃♀️…
The 🚴♀️
So it probably comes as no surprise that this is 100% my favourite part of triathlon, as I spent years racing time trials. And it was all my dad’s fault!
I wanted to buy a basic bike to ride the couple of miles to the yard where I kept my horse, and happily dad took me to my local bike shop. About an hour later and £1200 lighter I emerged with my first road bike…far more bike and expense than anticipated but my dad was very persuasive as to why I needed it 😂And from there it snowballed.
I wasn’t quite sure how my relationship with the bike would now be seeing as I hadn’t ridden for a few years, and also seeing my dad’s health deteriorate made it particularly hard. He was no longer able to ride his bikes and do the thing he loved, so I anticipated feeling guilty if I got on my own bike. Again it was my lovely training partners who literally dragged me out for the first few rides, and I haven’t looked back since. The little white TT bike made her comeback, and I swear my dad has firmly been sat on my shoulder every time I have got on that bike. It definitely feels very different to be back out racing a bike knowing that I can’t tell dad all about it afterwards, but my mental attitude is so much stronger and I’m determined to do my best each time just for him.
The main problem I have is keeping a lid on the power knowing that I now have to run afterwards, but I’m working on that!
And I know for a fact that if dad was here to tell my triathlon stories to, his response would definitely be “That’s great. But most importantly, how did it go on the bike” 😂
