Lucas has been an Almondbury Wesleyan Club Star since 2023, when the club started its W&Gs section. Right from the very beginning he was willing to give up his time to help with Wes’s female teams.
At first he learnt how to score for the Women’s softball team, every scorer who did the job with him would say what a polite, helpful and chatty boy he was. We even had scorers saying they were hoping he would be scoring with them because of how cheery and enthusiastic he is.
Once the club started its girls section he assisted by developing his umpiring skills. The club attends the Huddersfield Introductory to Cricket Festivals. He umpires with calm and understanding, making sure the girls are having fun as well as learning the basics about cricket matches. After gaining confidence with the 6 a side festivals he then started to umpire the U13 league matches. He showed his communication skills by working with the other umpires and his understanding of game development by his leniency and support of those who were less experienced.
He didn’t stop there, after helping coach at training sessions, setting up equipment and demonstrating drills, he then decided he’d like to be a coach. He went on the Young Leaders course run by the club and now assists with planning sessions and running drills. He always makes the training sessions fun and has created an environment where the girls feel comfortable to give new skills a go.
He has spent most of his spare time this season at the club either scoring, the W&Gs and senior teams, umpiring, coaching or spectating the senior teams where he will always be on hand to collect glasses or chat to other club members.
Since the club set up the W&Gs section 4 seasons ago, Lucas has been a continuous support. He has been there from the very beginning, realising that cricket is for all who want to play regardless of gender, age or ability. He has committed himself to the tasks with a smile on his face, spreading the joy of cricket to everyone he works with. Without his support the club would not have been able to expand the female section to FIVE teams as quickly as it did. He has shown determination to develop his own skills for the wider good of the club, supporting W&Gs cricket throughout the indoor and outdoor season.
