Last night we held our first open evening, introducing people to our club and passion, we reached out to the public to support the event and boy did we receive it! Thank you so much to everyone who came to try it out, at one point we had 38 people on the mats all doing Tomiki Aikido!

We can’t wait to see you all return as the response from the evening was amazing!

Special shoutout to our existing junior class who all supported everyone who was new in helping them do techniques and learning some Japanese Terminology, they truly represented the values that this club promotes, proud as always ❤️

Learning how to fall is just as important as learning how to throw.

Every week, we make sure our team practice breakfalls, backwards, sideways, rolls and flips. All because it’s important to learn and recognise in life that when you do get knocked down, you get straight back up.

As you can see by the videos after every landing, flip or throw there are smiles all around beaming with energy and radiating fun.

Unfortunately this Is something that other schools do not focus on but here at Huddersfield Tomiki Aikido we recognise it as a pillar of understanding and self reflection. Not only does it aid mobility, exercise, fitness and stamina, it provides life lessons that are never forgotten.

It’s not just a martial arts class to us, it’s about making a positive difference to each and every persons life that walk through our doors.

We are running an open evening on Monday 14th September from 6.30-8pm for anyone of the ages 5-13. Get in contact to attend!

🌟 BUT HOW CAN MARTIAL ARTS HELP MY CHILD AT SCHOOL?

🥋 BETTER FOCUS
Martial arts requires children to listen, observe, follow instructions and stay focused helping develop their ability to concentrate and avoid distractions. Research shows that training in martial arts develops the prefrontal cortex, this part of the brain helps you pay attention and avoid distractions.

🧠 STRONGER MEMORY
Learning techniques, sequences, Japanese terminology and kata challenges children to remember and reproduce information.

💨 STRESS RELIEF
Exercise provides a positive outlet for energy and stress, while training in a structured environment encourages calmness and controlled breathing.

🎯 DISCIPLINE & GOAL SETTING
Working towards grading examinations teaches children the value of practice, patience, perseverance and achieving goals — skills that transfer far beyond the dojo.

MORE THAN JUST MARTIAL ARTS

We don’t just want to teach children how to throw, move and defend themselves.
We want to help them become more confident, disciplined, respectful and resilient young people.
And they’ll have fun doing it! 🥋🔥

Today we visited The Forbidden Corner and what a fun visit it was, getting soaked in the waterfalls and stepping stones had the team drenched 😂

This is Kobe, one of the many superstars in our class ⭐️

Kobe joined us just under two years ago and has shown incredible motivation and dedication ever since. He’s a shining example of what can be achieved through great coaching, consistent effort, and—most importantly—having fun along the way.

Kobe is the current U8 Regional and National Champion in Randori No Kata, Tanto Kakarigeiko, and Ninindori—and he has no plans to give up those titles anytime soon!

This summer, he’ll be representing Team GB at the World Championships in Poland 🇵🇱

Here’s a short video of Kobe practicing his breakfalls during Tanto Kakarigeiko in last night’s session.

We’re also excited to share that we have a FREE training offer available throughout April! Anyone new—both juniors and seniors—is welcome to come along and train with us for FREE.

Huddersfield Tomiki Aikido in action 🥋

Tomiki Aikido is a unique style of aikido that blends traditional self-defence techniques with live, competitive practice (randori). It teaches timing, balance breaking, control, and precision — not just rehearsed moves, but skills you can actually apply against a resisting partner.

Why it’s useful:
✔️ Builds real self-defence ability
✔️ Improves reflexes, coordination, and awareness
✔️ Teaches how to stay calm under pressure
✔️ Develops control without relying on strength

Soft, efficient, and effective — using movement and timing to overcome force.

If you’re interested in learning we always offer 2 taster sessions for free.

Friday we visited our friends at Epic Aikido Club, here’s some techniques we were working on!
