📰 A Team Match Report
Mirfield Spartans A suffered a heavy defeat at home to Woodhouse Warriors on Saturday, but there was no shortage of spirit and endeavour on show from the lads.
The friendly was arranged just a few months after our first team had met Woodhouse in the Challenge Cup, and we knew this would be a huge test for the boys.
But despite the visitors having the quality, power and cohesion to rack up the points, there were plenty of positives for us to take.
The 15 available players on duty featured two debutants, including one playing his first game of rugby league, and injuries as the contest wore on left us with no bench and a real uphill battle.
But that’s probably also a bit unfair on Woodhouse who, despite their own rustiness, more than deserved their big win, scoring some superb long-range tries and dominating the contest from the first whistle.
It wasn’t all one-way traffic though, and Spartans enjoyed several periods of pressure and were also able to force errors with some good defence in the wet conditions.
Dylan Goodward scored both of our tries, crossing in the first half after reacting quickest to an attempted short drop-out, and then showing good footwork close to the line to dot the ball down after the break.
Both goals were missed in the wet conditions.
Simon Newton almost capped a top display in the middle of the park with a try of his own in the second half, but was agonisingly held up over the line, while winger TJ Smith saw a debut try chalked off for a forward pass.
Newton, who played the full game in the middle of the park, was one of several Spartans to receive praise for their efforts at full-time, with Callum Payne, Callum Allaway, Jack Thornton, Adam Senior and Ethan Thompson also catching the eye.
There was also strong leadership throughout from senior players Harley Beardsell, who captained the side, and centre Jamie McCarthy, as the lads stuck together throughout the contest.
We’d like to thank Woodhouse for making the trip across at late notice and providing some valuable game time for our young lads, who will take a lot from Saturday’s experience.
No A team game this weekend, but we already have a double-header locked in for the following week, as both our first team and A team make the trip to Hull to face Myton Warriors.
Thank you to all the players, coaches and volunteers who made Saturday happen.
