Horwich St Mary’s u16’s (Year 11 next academic year) are on the lookout for a mid-high level defender and midfielder to add to our outstanding set of lads. Following 3 successive promotions and recent cup winners, we’re excited for the next step in our journey.

We offer some of the best grass pitches in the N.W and a route to open age football.

We train on Monday evenings and will be competing in the BBDFL next season.

Continuing to build on our recent success, Horwich St Mary’s Lisbon U15’s are on the lookout for an experienced outfield player to add more depth to our fantastic set of lads.

We play Saturday mornings in the NBJFL (N M’cr) and train on Monday evenings at Bolton Arena. We are a strong mid ability team who have achieved consecutive promotions and current league cup winners.

Experience is essential and ideally defensive/ midfield minded players.

Bias, but I believe we have the best set of lads and parents. 🟢⚪️⚽️

Well, what a game we had the pleasure of witnessing this morning!
With Ree out sick it was Taylor and Schofield in net for a half each.

Coming into the game we knew we were in for a very tough, entertaining game with both teams having near perfect starts to the season.

The game started even with both teams trying to get a foothold on the game, but it was R Mrabah who opened the scoring for the visitors, latching on to a delicious through ball and stroking it home for I believe his 10th goal of the season!

The game continued at such a fast pace with both teams displaying some great pass and move football, but it was Shawside who grabbed 2 goals within 5 minutes of each other with the second being very dubious with Taylor having 2 hands on the ball before it was knocked into the net.

The team talk was simple. Keep the pace, play the negative pass to draw the opposition in then play the killer for for the electric forwards to run on to.

5 minutes after the restart saw a dazzling run from Ollerton down the left beating 3 players before cutting in, beating another defender and slotting it passed the goal keeper. 2-2 and what an individual masterpiece!

Lisbon’s third soon came after with Taylor, who was a real game changer when coming out of net as striker, using his strength well to hold off his man, spin round and getting his shot away to the bottom left.

With 30 minutes still to go and both teams continuing to probe and trying to exeert their authority, it was Shawside who got themselves back into it with a lovely curling shot from 25 yards into the top right.

Rolling their sleeves up, Horwich weren’t having it though and started to take the game my the scruff of the neck with some no-none sense challenges and distributing the ball well out wide to create plenty of chances, with who else but Riley Taylor receiving the ball from high, showing immense strength, resulting in him spinning his man and unleashing the ball in to the net. That’s Taylor’s 7th goal in 3 games!

With Shawside trying to get back into the game, to no avail, Horwich continued to probe, creating the best chances. With 10 minutes to go it was the dynamic movement of Ollerton again who drove towards goal, but being forced away from the goal by the goalkeeper, the ball fell to Trickett who smashed through the difference from 20 yards into the empty net. 5-3 Lisbon! I think that could be Timmy’s 10th goal of the season too!

The drama didn’t end there though with Shawside pulling a goal back with 5 to go.
It was a nervy end with Horwich creating some more chances, but it took an outstanding save from Schofield to prevent the game from going to penalties with an unbelievable save from a direct free kick, turning it around the post. There’s a reason he’s Charnock Richard’s number 1!

Full time - 5-4 to Lisbon with all coaches and spectators clapping the efforts of all lads on the pitch.

The report doesn’t give justice to the hardworking all the players put in with some brilliant defending and midfield action throughout.

Coaches man of the match went to Graham for a determined performance on the wing with him giving up on nothing and being a continued nuisance to the opposition.

Parents player went to M Mrabah for a commanding display at left back vs an exceptional winger who he managed to keep quiet throughout the game.

Well done Horwich - another spectacle and another win. We’re in the hat for the next round.

The continued effort and progress these lads are showing each week is quite something with the consistency they’re showing. In our last 34 competitive games (since the start of last season) they have won 28, drew 2 and lost 4.

Today’s match pitted us against a very good playing and technical AFC Bolton. Over the years we faced each other many times in closely contested games and we were looking forward to this one.

Both teams played some good stuff, but we couldn’t be any prouder of our boys for taking the game by the scruff of the neck and reaping the rewards.

The first goal came when an outstanding flick on by R Mrabah fell to Ollerton who expertly looped it over their GK into the net.
Half time 1-0 Lisbon.

However a few minutes into the second half, AFC Bolton pulled themselves back into the game when a 25 yard screamer flew into the top corner.
Within a minute though, Lisbon deservedly restored their lead when a wicked run and cross from M Mrabah was met with a bullet header by Graham.

With Lisbon looking comfortable, the third came when Draper floated a ball into the box for R Mrabah to smash another header home.
AFC Bolton didn’t lie down though, and while Lisbon were trying to express themselves at the back, the ball was nicked from them and poked home. 3-2 Lisbon.

With Lisbon frustrated at conceding another preventable goal, they dominated the final proceedings with some brilliant play with another 2 goals to show for it. The first was from a free kick taken by Singleton with the ball falling to R Mrabah, who gladly smashed the ball into the net from 10 yards out.

With Lisbon hitting the woodwork again, their dominance was rewarded when Scott slotted home with a few seconds left from a goal line scramble.

Another good run out for the lads with great performances all round. ⚽️🟢⚪️👏

Surprisingly, although only 2 minutes drive separating the two teams, it’s the first time HSM Lisbon have played Old Rivi Steamers.

With derby bragging rights on the table, both teams started the game fast with both teams playing some nice pass and move football. However, it was HSM Lisbon who were guilty of missing many clear chances.

The half time talk brought some tactical changes with the message still the same - press in numbers, win your duels and utilise the space, especially the width.

The second half was a dominant display by St Mary’s with a couple more guilt edged chances being missed and with Old Rivi’s keeper in fine form. However, the break finally came when, following a corner, a goal mouth scramble ensued with Kerr smashing the ball home from close range.

With St Mary’s defence resolute and the midfield dominating the game and constantly sending probing through balls, it was the blistering pace of the front 3 that continued to cause havoc. With his frightening pace it was our new recruit - R Mrabah -who left the opposing defence for dead latching onto another killer ball and smashing it home. 2-0.

With relentless pressure from the away team and more chances being squandered, it was time for Trickett to smash the ball home from a corner with a fine header.

A great workout for the boys overall with brilliant performances all round.

Tuesday evening took HSM Lisbon to Haslingden vs Junior Hoops knowing that a win would confirm second place and seal a second promotion in 3 years to Division 1.

Knowing what was up for grabs, the boys needed little motivation, and with Hoops having strong, physical players, our focus was to win the 50/50s, communicate throughout and distribute the ball well.

As expected, the game began at a frantic pace with both teams wanting to get a strong hold in the game by trying to dictate play. Strong tackles were being put in and both teams were creating decent chances, but both defences and GK’s were resolute.

After 15 minutes the opening goal came when a typical superb control and volley from Tommy Tricket saw the ball smash in under the bar from distance. What a finish!! 🔥
With both teams still giving their all it was Joe Ollerton who was causing constant havoc with his dazzling runs down the left with chances coming closer. However, it was Hoops who found the equaliser when a superb ball over the top saw their speedy striker latch onto it and slot it home. 1-1.

This made Lisbon step up another gear with them going on to dominate the last 15 minutes of the half resulting in a contender for goal of the season. With Ollerton again causing havoc, the resulting corner found its way to Isaac Schofield, who smashed an overhead kick right into the top corner. To help you visualise, it was a carbon copy of Andy Carroll’s scissor kick wonder goal. Needlessly to say, every coach and spectator applauded!

Going in at the break 2-1 to the good, we discussed how we could push on further with the boys agreeing that we need to continue to win our duels, have the midfielders find more space and put their backline under more pressure with more tantalising through balls.

Besides Hoops hitting the post, the second half was dominated by Lisbon with our backline being resolute and our CDM (Lennon Bate) letting nothing get past him. Our forward play was also a lot more creative with them all linking up fantastically and creating space.

After 55 minutes the very impressive Riley Taylor, who epitomised the team’s performance with an all action display, spun around his defender and was taken down in the box. The result - Mr cool Tommy Trickett slotting home for his second. 3-1.

With Lisbon continuing to cause problems, the 4th came when another corner was dispatched by a deft touch by Bobby Singleton at the back post. It was a fitting end for Bobby to cap off another powerful display at the back.

With one of our best team displays of the season, HSM confirmed their promotion!!

With incredible performances throughout, all players received the MOM award!
Well done boys for another fantastic team display.

Our final game of the season takes us to Whitworth Valley on Saturday.

Playing for a spot in the NBJFL cup final, HSM Lisbon travelled to Prestwich for their semi clash vs the Phantoms. With previous games being postponed and with the Phantoms trailing Lisbon by only a few points in the league, we didn’t know what to expect. However, the objective was clear - to start with a high tempo, take the game to them and communicate.

On a very challenging pitch and with a few nerves from the boys (you would never have known!) the boys started fantastically and the majority of the first 25 minutes was played in oppositions half. During that time Lisbon notched 2 goals with the first arriving after 10 minutes when a typical dazzling run by Ollerton down the left was slotted home with great composure.

With Lisbon exerting themselves very well by picking out passes at will and by applying constant pressure, they forced the Phantoms backline into a pass back, resulting in an indirect free kick from 10 yards out. With Scofield on the ball, he rolled it on to Draper, who smashed it first time across goal into the net. In the words of Draper, “That’s the best goal I’ve ever scored for St Mary’s!”

The final 10 minutes of the half saw a balanced affair and Prestwich managed to pull one back when the ball bobbled (dodgy pitch!) over Ree when he came out to claim the ball.

At half time we tweaked our formation to find a better balance in the middle by deploying 2 defensive minded midfielders. We knew Prestwich would come out fighting so the boys had to be ready to dig deep and win their duels.

The first 15 minutes of the second half saw both side battling hard, but it was Lisbon who were putting the Phantom’s on the back foot and calving out the better chances.
With 15 minutes gone the pressure paid off with Trickett smashing home from a great through-ball in to the bottom of the net.

Although 3-1 up, Lisbon had to continue digging deep to keep counter the incoming pressure. And with 10 minutes to go, Trickett went on one of his dazzling runs in to the box jinxing and turning when he was brought down - penalty!
With Trickett dusting himself down, he took the ball and, with much venom, smashed the ball in to the roof of the net. 4–1 Lisbon!

The action wasn’t complete though with Prestwich scoring a consolation from a corner with 5 minutes to go.

On such a heavy, bobbly pitch, every player put in 100% effort and they reaped the rewards they deserved - a place in the NBJFL final!!

🏆 Coaches player went to the magnificent Lennon Bate, who worked tireless in CDM winning all of his battles and nullified the oppositions play brilliantly.

🏆 Parents player was a tough pick with so many fantastic performances, but it was eventually shared between Singleton, Schofield and Ollerton for their commanding performances.

Yesterday’s match took HSM Lisbon to Glossop to play Tintwistle in a very competitive game.

Going into the game, the big focus for the boys was building on their impressive structure while out of possession by being more creative and daring while in possession. Better communication was also a prerequisite!

With both teams fighting for promotion, it was a cagey opening 15 minutes with both teams trying ro find some clear openings, however, both teams were resolute at the back.

With Lisbon growing more in confidence, we began to exert ourselves a little more and the coaches were very impressed with the improved communication.
Half time 0-0.

With the wind and the slope now on our side, we decided to go more attacking by deploying 2 attacking midfielders to support the striker and wingers, and the change in formation certainly paid off with Tintwistle registering no shots in the second half and Lisbon controlling the game. However, although Lisbon were pushing, Tintwistle’s stubborn defence was resolute and Lisbon couldn’t find a breakthrough.

With an entertaining game edging towards a 0-0, Lisbon continued to push and break the deadlock and it finally came in the 70th minute!
With virtually the last kick of the game, Singleton’s second corner caused havoc in the penalty box and following a few attempted shots and clearances, the ball found its way to Ollerton, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net. Delirium ensued!!

With all the players putting in such brilliant performances, there were many nominations for parents and coaches player of the match.

However, with another masterful performance out wide and the scorer of the winning goal, Ollerton secured parents player.
Coaches player went to Draper for playing in 3 different positions throughout the game and putting in a brilliant performance throughout.

With one game in hand, Lisbon now sit 1 point from top! Well done boys! ⚽️🟢⚪️

Boys, what a comeback!

The first half saw us put in a good fight, but the oppositions quick transitions and rapid strikers proved a real challenge. We were a little over run in the middle but the effort from all our lads was there. Ollerton also scored a brilliant solo goal with one of his dazzling runs down the left and he slotted it home brilliantly.

Adam did the half time team talk and outlined to the boys the need for the defensive midfielders to cut out the opposing midfielders through balls and to get close to a man if that option wasn’t on, while also being side on and avoid facing the player. Being 2 goals goals, he also outlined the possibility of going to 1 defensive midfielder to try and play the game in their half.

Well, the boys listened and executed it perfectly. We managed the game so much better and I can’t recall Bridge having a shot on target. I thought our defence was superb with Murray, Singleton, Kabir and Oxburrow doing the simple things brilliantly. So strong!

The start of the second half saw another dazzling Ollerton run down the left resulting with him whipping it in brilliantly for Trickett to expertly smash home. 3-2! The boys continued to pile on the pressure with Schofield (Isaac) and Bate battling brilliant.

Someone will need to remind me of one of Trickett’s other goal, but he completed his hat trick with a typical long range effort that floated under the cross bar. Superb!!
With Draper also in a more advanced position, he completed the scoring by latching on to a rebound and smashed it home. 🔥

The boys dug deep again today and turned around another 2 goal deficit. I’m really proud of the character they’re demonstrating every week!

Parents player went to Schofield for his all action display in the middle of the park. I think we all saw how this lad is going to push us on!

Coaches player went to Trickett for his brilliant performance in the middle and another hat trick!

On another day Ollerton and Murray could easily have walked away with the accolades!
