⚡️🟢AWAY DAY SWINTON TIGERS🟢⚡️

After no fixture last weekend and being halted by Storm Amy the week before, we were back at it today and away to top of the league Swinton Tigers. Captain today was Joseph Jackson who led the boys out.

The game kicked off on a bobbly and bumpy pitch, with Swinton being new to our league we weren’t sure what they would bring but they settled into the game quicker than us and started with some good possession and passing. Lightning couldn’t get into the game early on, the ball was up in the air a lot with the opponents playing some long balls trying to get in round the back of our defenders. The Tigers winger had to much time on the ball and ran through on goal down the left hand side, he was brought down just inside the penalty box, penalty awarded and converted 1-0 Swinton. The greens came back into the game and looked more in control but after some poor defending, Tigers midfielder was given too much time and space then hit a long range shot to lob the keeper, 2-0 Swinton.

Closing stages of the first half Lightning were on top, Finlay Oliver almost getting us back in the game but being stopped by the crossbar. Second half we knew an early goal for the greens would have us right back in it, we came close with several chances but just couldn’t make it happen. Swinton then got a third, unmarked and headed in. Greens had a huge task ahead now but the lads dug deep. Greens kept the Tigers at bay, some excellent play though midfield which finally led to a great finish by Finlay Oliver after his team mate Andrew Oliver won the ball and delivered him a well weighted pass for him to slot it in the bottom corner. Game on, momentum
was with lightning now and the pressure finally payed off again when Ernie Mollitt pressed the defender and won the ball to hit a superb strike which went in off the crossbar. Although the big comeback was on, Swinton got a 4th and it was just to much for us to do.

A little unlucky today but we gave ourselves too much to do always being behind. We had our chances and a comeback was on, we dominated for most of the game but a few silly mistakes let us down. MOM went to Andrew Oliver, he was outstanding from the moment he came on showing aggression, making some big tackles, great skill up and down the pitch and getting an assist for his team mate Finlay. Well done, superb today thoroughly deserved 🏆 👏🏻.

🟢⚽️ OFF THE MARK ⚽️🟢

After a disappointing result in our 1st game of the season, it was a 2 whole weeks wait before we could get back out there and this week we hosted FC Bridgewater.

We started the game and within the 1st minute Bridgewater got a corner. After a few swipes at clearing the ball, Mason connected with the ball only for it to ricochet off the Bridgewater player and plant itself into our bottom corner. 1 down in under a minute. The boys gathered themselves and knew there was plenty time left in the game. We then went on a 15 to 20 minute spell of dominance in terms of territory, however our front 3 of Finlay, JBG and Oscar Dags were just struggling to break down a stubborn defence and get any real test on the keeper. The midfield 3 of Mason, Corey and Josh were relentless in picking up 1st and 2nd balls and being physical, whilst our full backs Seth and Jacob continued to push forward and pen the Bridgewater side in. Then a few changes of personnel were introduced in Alfie, JJ, Ernie, Isaac, Andrew and Aidan. The depth of the squad is now telling in games and we kicked on to get the breakthrough. A free kick sent into a dangerous area by Jude Oliver, was challenged for by Finlay Oliver and the keeper parried only into the path of Oscar Dagnall at the back post for the equaliser. The lads continued their great work and got their reward when Oscar Dagnall worked well down the right side, crossed in and the keeper parried again, this time into the path of a very sharp Aidan Weir who slotted home calmly to take us into the break with a deserved lead.

2nd half message was just keep the levels and work rate and boy did they deliver, JJ, Ernie, Andrew particularly shining in the 2nd half, we created chance after chance as fitness of our lads was key as Bridgewater became more and more tired. Eventually the work of the lads paid off, Finlay Oliver was put through on goal by a lovely JBG through ball, but the keeper saved low, but yet again the man of the moment Oscar Dagnall was following up to slot into the bottom corner to seal the result. The last 10 minutes were cruis control for the lads as they saw out their first win for the season.

Man of the match was Oscar Dagnall who has been in great form for a few weeks now and adding those 2 goals made him the match winner.
