I escaped the bullies at school & found peace of mind by the water. I have met people from all walks of life but with one shared interest & passion. I struggled at school with core subjects but I enjoyed learnin

g, reading & researching the art of Angling. I never saw it as a career though until 2019 when I came across an opportunity to lease my own fishing lake and saw how much the sport helped other people, especially during the Pandemic. I knew I was a competent Angler but I didn't know if I would enjoy teaching others how to fish. I was unhappy in my corporate job so I decided I had nothing to lose by trying and this led to me completing my Angling coaching qualifications so that I could create Off The Scale Outdoor Education in 2021. I soon discovered there were very few affordable ways of learning to fish and it was very rare to find any coaches operating within schools. I knew it was a sport that required skill, patience and hand eye coordination. The more you put in to it, the more successful you become which is a great life lesson & had helped improve my confidence over the years. I was certain that we could turn it in to a fantastic science based sport experience. Turning a passion in to a business is not something many people get to do so I feel very privileged to be in this position."

We've had dozens of local scout groups learn to fish with us over the last few years. To keep our sessions the best they can be it involves having lots of coaches & helpers. It's not like a football coach who can work with 10+ kids. We rarely work with more than 3 participants per coach and if we can we'll work 1:1.

Top quality fishing coaching requires lots of observation, demonstration, correction, explanation, questioning & on top of that, a friendly chat to connect. An animal's welfare is on the line and therefore we try our best to make sure that best practice is followed to ensure that human and fish safety is at the top of the agenda.

We pay our coaches for their time.

We pay day tickets to the venues we use, supporting their businesses and increasing their customer base.

We spare no expense on the best bait and tackle.

We coach to the same standards that we would fish ourselves. If I wouldn't use it myself, it's not acceptable.

Ollie with a lovely male Tench from our Fall Birch Lodge Coarse Fishery. The Tench fishing seems to be getting better as we head in to summer. Thank you to Thomas Biggs for his maintenance work down at the lodge this year! Everything is looking well maintained and trimmed. Sam with a lovely Fall Birch Lodge Coarse Fishery Carp from this week. The weather has been difficult to predict and the catch reports are very varied. One Gentleman using method feeder had half a dozen decent Tench in a half day session yesterday up to 4lb.

My days we have been soooo busy recently, i've hardly had any time for social media updates. Lots of fish caught...but nothing really of worthy of mention until today. Spawning Carp over the last 2 weeks have meant that fishing has been tough. Lots of Bream, Roach, Perch, F1s & Ide but today's sudden changes in temperature really brought the fish on the feed and to the surface allowing us to practice pellet waggler and Jigger rig techniques with our students.

HAVE YOU TRIED OUR FISHING LAKE IN BOLTON?

Couple of weeks ago one of my fishing lessons was cancelled due to a miscommunication at the school's end and rather than head home I decided to drop on to our tricky little farm lodge in Horwich, Bolton, BL6 4LH.

You can find it on Google maps under Off The Scale Outdoor Education.

Over the last few years we have stocked this venue with lots of species including Crucian Carp, Mirrors, Commons, Koi, Ghosts, Leathers, Tench, Silver Bream, Roach, Gudgeon & Perch.

We've just introduced 750 new fish 3 weeks ago and hopefully they are settling in nicely. I always try to give advice to people before they fish the lodge & my favourite baits are worms, maggots, prawns & white bread. Pellets, boilies & meat sometimes work but the fish don't recognise them as a primary food source because of how rich the venue is in invertebrate life.

We do allow surface baits so if it is warm it is always worth a try, especially in and around the lillies. With the new fish stocked in, I am hoping it will make the fishing a little easier for beginners as well as more experienced anglers.

Add additional people to the lesson for £20 extra per person or we will pair you with someone to reduce the price as long as you don't mind 1 coach between 2/3 participants.
