Horsmonden 1XI made it four wins on the bounce with another dominant display, defeating Cudham Wyse thanks to a bowling performance that was relentless from start to finish. Every bowler played their part, maintaining pressure throughout, but the standout performers were Joe McCaffrey, who marked his welcome return in Horsmonden colours with a superb five-wicket haul, and Andrew Steadman, whose excellent spell yielded three wickets. Together they helped dismiss the visitors for just 129.

The chase got off to the perfect start as Ed Streeten continued his outstanding form, blasting another half-century at the top of the order. Paul O’Shea provided excellent support as the opening pair quickly took control of the game and put Horsmonden firmly in the driving seat.

There was a slight wobble as wickets fell in the middle order, but the result never seriously looked in doubt as Horsmonden eased to victory. Four wins in a row now for the 1s, who are beginning to click into gear and look a side capable of causing plenty of problems as the season progresses.

Horsmonden 2XI suffered a disappointing defeat away to Four Elms, but there was plenty of character on display despite the result. On a two-paced wicket that proved difficult for batting, Dougie Gartshore looked the most composed player at the crease, compiling a well-made 43 while showing real patience and application. Unfortunately, he was unable to find the support needed from the rest of the batting line-up and Horsmonden were eventually dismissed for 110. There was no lack of effort or determination, it simply wasn’t their day with the bat.

Despite defending a modest total, the 2s refused to roll over and produced an excellent fightback with the ball. Tom Beaumont was the standout performer, producing a superb spell to claim 3-26 and help reduce Four Elms to 85-5. Having already won from similar positions, belief remained high as Horsmonden applied pressure and sensed another memorable comeback could be on the cards.

Sadly, it wasn’t to be, as Four Elms managed to navigate the closing stages and reach their target. While the result was disappointing, the 2s battled hard until the very end and showed the resilience that has become a hallmark of this side. A bump in the road rather than a setback, and there’s more than enough quality in the dressing room to bounce back strongly next week.

Horsmonden 1XI continued their impressive start to the season with another professional victory, this time over Pembury.

Having lost the toss, Horsmonden were asked to field first and wasted no time imposing themselves on the game. Matt Sadler and Andrew Steadman set the tone brilliantly with a hostile opening spell, combining pace and accuracy to tie the Pembury batsmen down and ensure there was no easy start.

As good as the opening pair were, they proved to be merely the warm-up act for what followed.

With the game finely poised, Alfie Glass entered the attack and produced a spell that those in attendance will be talking about for years to come. Hat-tricks are one of cricket’s rarest achievements, but Alfie made it look remarkably simple, sparking huge celebrations from his teammates. He wasn’t finished there either, continuing to rip through the batting line-up to finish with outstanding figures of 5-16. Evan Isaac-Cornish marked his return to the side in style, providing excellent support with two wickets of his own as Pembury were dismissed for just 98.

The chase appeared straightforward and Horsmonden looked firmly in control at 65-2. However, cricket rarely follows the script and a sudden wobble gave the visitors a glimmer of hope. With a few nerves beginning to appear around the ground, Evan Isaac-Cornish took matters into his own hands, launching a series of powerful blows to quickly knock off the remaining runs and secure victory by three wickets.

Another professional performance from the 1s, who continue to build momentum and confidence with every passing week.

Horsmonden 2XI suffered a frustrating defeat away at Underriver in a match where they did almost everything required to come away with the points.

Batting first, Horsmonden made a positive start with the openers setting the tone superbly. Dean Sands and Alex Redwood batted with the assurance and composure of club professionals, building the foundations of the innings with a mixture of sensible accumulation and punishing anything loose. Their efforts were well supported later in the innings by Max Garner, whose contribution helped push the total to 151-8 from the allotted overs.

On a pitch where runs were far from easy to come by, 151 felt a highly competitive score, particularly given the strength and variety within the Horsmonden bowling attack.

The visitors then backed up that belief with an outstanding effort in the field. Wickets fell regularly, pressure was applied throughout, and when the seventh Underriver wicket went down Horsmonden looked firmly on course for another memorable victory.

Unfortunately for the 2s, they came up against an innings of exceptional quality. Underriver’s opening batsman produced a remarkable unbeaten 117, scoring the vast majority of the runs required and single-handedly keeping his side in the contest when defeat looked inevitable. It was a knock that ultimately proved the difference between the two teams.

While the result didn’t go Horsmonden’s way, there was plenty to admire in the performance. The 2s battled hard, executed their plans well and, on another day, would almost certainly have found themselves celebrating a deserved win. Sometimes you simply have to applaud a special innings.

Horsmonden 1XI produced a brutally efficient display to brush aside Shipbourne and continue their excellent start to the season.

Asked to field first on a scorching afternoon, Horsmonden’s bowlers were relentless from the outset, never allowing Shipbourne any rhythm or momentum. Ed Streeten was the standout performer with a superb 4-20, combining accuracy and aggression throughout his spell. He was well supported by Max Rothwell, who claimed 2-27, before Tom Beaumont ripped through the lower order with 2-6. Backed up by a composed and disciplined effort in the field, Horsmonden dismissed Shipbourne for just 110.

If the bowling display was clinical, the chase was utterly ruthless. Horsmonden wasted no time in hunting down the target as man of the match Ed Streeten blasted an unbeaten 49 with a flurry of boundaries. Captain Frank Glass then joined the fun, bludgeoning a rapid 34 as the visitors stormed to victory inside just 12 overs.

Horsmonden 2XI continued their good start to the season with another superb run chase, this time overcoming Penshurst in a high-scoring thriller.

Penshurst elected to bat first on an excellent batting surface and made full use of the conditions, posting an imposing 235-4 from their 40 overs. Despite being put under real pressure for long periods, Horsmonden never let their standards slip in the field. Credit must go to the Penshurst batsmen, who cashed in on a very good track and kept the scoreboard moving consistently.

The reply could hardly have started worse as Horsmonden lost a wicket in the very first over. What followed, however, was a partnership of exceptional quality between captain Dean Sands and Max Melbourn that completely transformed the game. The pair added a magnificent 183 runs, shifting the momentum firmly back towards Horsmonden.

Max Melbourn produced a truly classy innings to bring up his maiden century for the club, an outstanding knock under pressure full of superb strokeplay. At the other end, Dean Sands continued his excellent early season form with a second half-century anchoring the chase brilliantly while keeping the required rate under control.

Thanks to their efforts, Horsmonden chased the target down in the final over to complete their second quality run chase in consecutive weeks.
