12 years ago today I took the big leap from working at a commercial gym (I can tell that story another day...that was the toughest 13 months in a job ever!) to starting my own personal training business, Fab Girl Fitness.

I trained clients in their living rooms, their hallways, their kitchens, their garages, their gardens and even in some impressive home gyms.

I’ve also had to learn how to do my accounts, marketing, sales, business planning and the list goes on!

There were some big bumps along the way but I’m so thankful for all of the amazing women I’ve worked with, who have taught me more than they’ll ever know.

Now 12 years on, plus one dog, one child, one pandemic, business name change to Balance Fitness and working from my own studio space...was it worth it? Hell yeah!!

To those who have worked with me, cheered me on, supported me, lifted me up when I was down, celebrated my wins with me, THANK YOU 💙

How many times have you forced yourself to do a workout because that mean internal voice is telling you that you’re not good enough and that you better work out now to change your body?

That voice was very loud for me this morning. So much so, that I put my gym kit on (wasn’t planning on working out today) and started a workout.

Then I took a minute and listened to my body, which was feeling tired, so I told that voice to f off.

Then I put on some chill yoga music and did a few stretches and yoga flows of my favourite moves that make me feel strong.

Did my body miraculously change in those 10 minutes? Of course not. But my mindset definitely did!

Now I’m going to get changed out of my gym kit into something I feel good in and get on with my day.

Workout because it makes you feel strong, energised, proud, focused, motivated, happy. Never because you don’t feel you’re good enough.

Things I need to do…go to the post office, grab a few groceries from the shop, get a load of laundry in, send client session confirmation emails, reply to a group what’s app message, take the dog for a walk….and the list goes on. It always will.

How am I supposed to fit a workout in? It’s not easy but I make it fit.

I know I’ll be so much more productive after a workout. I’ll feel energised. I’ll be in a better mood. I’ll sleep better tonight (which means a much happier me in the morning)…and this list goes on too.

Start prioritising your workouts. 30-45 minutes 2-3 times a week will make a world of difference! I promise.

Go grabs those weights ladies! 💪🏻

WHAT: Join Shannon for a 90 minute practical session on pelvic floor and core strength health. We will discuss the anatomy and function of the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles, practice techniques on how to effectively engage these muscles and go through exercises to best strengthen these areas.

You'll leave with a better understanding of the importance of your pelvic floor and your core muscles, as well as practical exercises that you can incorporate into your routine. You will be provided handouts to refer to and sent a video demonstrating all of the exercises practised.

WHO: This workshop is suitable for women of all levels.

WHERE: Balance Fitness Studio at Align Healthcare in Horsforth

There will be physical activity involved with this workshop, please wear appropriate gym kit (loose or stretchy leggings and top - no shoes required)

Just in case you need to hear this today....

You DO NOT need to burn off the Halloween treats you ate last night.

You DO NOT need to start a 1st of November detox or diet.

You DO NOT need to 'earn' or 'burn' the foods you eat.

Let's START breaking these ridiculous 'rules' and ENJOY ALL FOODS without any consequences.

The more we allow ourselves to choose and enjoy all types of foods the more we develop a healthy relationship with food.

There are no 'good' or 'bad' foods. If you feel good after you've eaten something, great! If you feel like crap after you've eaten something, maybe don't have it again or not as much next time.

We need to start listening to our body's so much more - they're pretty darn good at letting us know what we need when we take the time to listen.

I'm 42 years old with a 4 year old son.

I went from experiencing a miscarriage...that led to an infection which required surgery...then further surgery on my uterus...fertility treatment (not IVF)...pregnancy...labour that led to more surgery...post-natal depression...into peri-menopause.

Fun eh? 🤦🏼‍♀️

But do you know what's been my constant throughout all of this?

Movement.

I've had months off of strength training over those years but one thing I made sure to do was to keep moving my body. Whether that was laying in childs pose or getting outside for a walk.

I listened to my body, I rested a lot. But I moved when I could. I knew that movement of any kind was going to do my body and mind good. And it always did.

Movement is what's got me through some of my biggest challenges and that's why I'm so passionate about encouraging as many women as possible to move your bodies.

Whatever stage you are in life you need to keep moving. Literally!

I challenge you (yes you, reading this right now) to fit in 20 minutes of movement this weekend.

Movement with intention and purpose.

🚶‍♀️ A power walk to get your heart rate up and blood pumping through your body.

🧘‍♀️ Follow a yoga flow from YouTube.

💪 Grab some weights and flex those muscles!

💚 SMALL GROUP PERSONAL TRAINING SESSIONS ARE BACK! 💚

WHAT ARE SMALL GROUP PT SESSIONS?

Small group training sessions are at Balance Fitness Studio in Horsforth and are 45 minutes long where one health and fitness coach (ME 🙋🏼‍♀️) takes up to 3 clients through a personal training session together.

I ensure that each of you are doing the exercises correctly and working to a level that is suitable for you (and yes, all 3 of you can be at different levels and get an equally challenging and effective workout).

Benefits of working out in a small group is that you're able to get the true experience of a personal training session but with the motivation and support of other women working out with you!

Each block of 4 sessions costs £60 (only £15 per session!)

After each session you will be sent a copy of the workout plus an instructional video showing each of the exercises ensuring you feel confident doing the workout again on your own at home or gym.

In addition to being guided through a workout we also discuss a variety of topics throughout, including nutrition and mindset.
