Welcome to Hornsea and Holderness – Mini & Junior RUFC. The club welcomes children and young people of any gender aged 5-15 years. Hornsea RUFC was founded in 1924, with many of the original players being ex-public-school boys. Almost a hundred years later, the club now prides itself on the development of local young players, with the Mini and Junior coaches encouraging players through their first

tentative stud-sinking steps onto the pitch and up through basic and advanced rugby playing skills. Rugby is not simply a game, and our players leave the Hollis Recreation Ground with life skills. Perfecting the art of team play, developing self-awareness and confidence, and learning respect for others are key aspects which underpin the coaching sessions we offer. Between choosing the first pair of boots, to the first try, tackle and maul, the excitement of rugby is catching – and we hope to foster a lifetime of love for the sport. Here at Hornsea and Holderness, we are one big rugby family, and we welcome all to our teams. Come and join us at the Rec; all you need is a positive attitude and a willingness to give rugby a try!

Hornsea & Holderness U16's completed their 2025/26 season with a final home game against Old Brodleians U17's.
The Hornsea team have really progressed over the last 12 months and this was always going to be test to see how far they have come.
The game started at a fast pace, with Hornsea the first to test the oppositions defence. The Hornsea forwards working in their pods gained initial ground with Oliver K and Ben T taking the ball down field. The supporting rucking, from Freddy R and Cohen K really helping to recycle the ball cleanly.
Hornsea's pressure in the Old Brods 25 was enough to overwhelm their defence that saw interlinking play from the Hornsea no.8 Jayden N who passed the ball in the attacking line to see Harry B speed through the gap and score the first points of the game.
The Old Brods forwards came straight back into Hornsea and only through tough tackling from Jack G, Dexter E and Harry B kept them from progressing.
On 16 minutes the Hornsea defensive line was breached after the Old Brods big prop forward was able to carry 3 Hornsea defenders over the line to score their first points of the game, even with Harry F and Jacob H putting some solid tackles in the process.
Hornsea, boyant with their team performance so far in the game continued to kick and pass the ball into the Old Brods half and this paid dividends on 26 minutes after a spiral kick from the Hornsea no 10 was spilt forcing an attacking scrum 20 yards out from the Old Brods line.
Hornsea held strong in the scrum with a quick return for Jayden N to collect and move the ball out to the wing, with a pass out to the winger Tom S who showed a clean pair of heels to score a well worked try over in the left hand corner.
The game was tight and both teams really giving it everything with hard running and tackling. As the game was drawing to a first half close Hornsea were unable to keep the Old Brods pack from driving the ball over the line and touching down to score their second of the match.

Half time 10 - 10

Hornsea started the second half with the wind behind them and played the wind advantage well with deep kicks from the the Hornsea no10 William H and kept the opposition turning and having to run back down field. A strong chasing defensive line from Hornsea forcing Old Brods to try and kick their way out of danger. Hornsea's set plays were working well with lineouts and scrummaging, even with several changes made.
Hornsea, happy to pass the ball through their hands gained good yards and eventually scored on 59 minutes. The attacking line from the back of a scrum saw Reid V carry the ball into contact before passing out to William H who passed the ball to Daniel C who in turn passed the ball back into Harvey W who then slipped the ball to Harry B to cut back through the Old Brods defence and score to the right hand side of the upright. William H converting.
Old Brods not giving up on the game continued to take every opportunity, repeatedly using their strength in the forwards to carry the ball into contact. Credit to Cohen T, Will B, Logan K and Freddy R for fronting up and making the tackles when needed against the much bigger opposition.
The Hornsea team had worked out that drawing the Old Brods forwards into contact and then shipping the ball out through the backs was the way to defeat them this was managed superbly by Reid V and William H which allowed for continued runs down both sides of the field with Harry H, Harvey W, Daniel C and Tom S.
Credit to the covering Old Brods defence for making numerous try saving tackles to keep Hornsea from extending the lead.
However, after a prolonged period of pressure Hornsea were able to force multiple penalties that ultimately led to a penalty 25 yards out. William H adding the penalty kick.
The closing few minutes of the game saw continued solid tackling and defensive speed from the Hornsea team that prevented any further forward traction from Old Brods.

Full Time 20 - 10

It was a great game played with the real ferocity, but with the values of rugby thoughout.
Hornsea's Man of the Match went to Harry B for heading the tackle count and his two well taken tries.
Well done to the Hornsea boys for standing up to the challenge and proving how far they have come.

Hornsea & Holderness U16's travelled over the Humber this weekend to play at Grimsby RUFC.
The tail end of storm Dave created difficult conditions for open, flowing rugby with very strong winds and horizontal rain at times during the match.
Even with the wind in their faces, it didnt take the Hornsea team long to get into their stride, as the forwards that have played a big part in the recent results continued to dominate the contact points with Jack G, Cohen K and Oliver K leading the way. It was on 7 minutes when Hornsea scored the first points of the game. After a well worked penalty saw the visitors 5 meters from the try line, before a switch ball from Harvey W to the blind side for Ben T to carve his way over the try line. With confidence levels high and even in horrendous conditions the Hornsea backs moved the ball across the back line with Daniel C, Tom S and Freddy R all having long runs with the ball in hand.
On 16 minutes a break from Freddy R and Daniel C down the left wing saw Harry H come within a meter of the try line before being bundled into touch.
Grimsby capitalised after a spilt ball on 26 minutes to score their first points of the game, which really was against the run of play at the time. Grimsby continued to use their big forwards to rumble the ball repeatedly down field, one after another that really created the Hornsea defence problems, however strong tackling from Harry F, Jayden N and Will B in particular managed to halt them on the 22 yard line. The pendulum swung in Hornsea's favour when the fly half William H kicked a huge 20:20 kick to bring the play down into the Grimsby danger zone.
The following lineout was collected well and the ball moved again along the Hornsea backs that saw Tom S dart over and plant the ball down to the right hand side of the sticks. William H converting.

Half Time 5 - 12

The Hornsea team really knew they were in a battle and knew they'd have to dig deep to get a result out of the game. However, it was Grimsby that managed to cross the whitewash first in the second half out by the left hand corner flag bringing the scores even closer after 5 minutes of play (10-12).
With the wind at their backs Hornsea used this to their advantage and from a scrum on the half way the ball was passed out to the right before being kicked against the play left to find the Hornsea scrum half Harvey W who fly-hacked the ball down field to the try line and touched down to get the score. William H adding the 2 points.
Hornsea were definitely having a purple patch in the game, albeit the free flowing passing had stopped, largely due to the weather conditions, it didn't stop the Hornsea forwards on a rampage down the field, with Dexter E, Jayden N and Freddy R having a long carry, before Logan K taking his turn and crossing the line, to only have it ruled out for a double movement.
Within a minute Hornsea were back contesting against the Grimsby line Cohen T trying to cross to be pushed back but the next carry saw Oliver K cross 10 meters out from the left hand touch line. Grimsby started trying different things, trying to break the Hornsea defence, by moving their forwards to the flanks and only through some gritty tackling from Jacob H, Jayden N and Harry F kept them from breaking out of their 25.
The following 10 minutes of the game saw a real change in the game plan from Grimsby as they used their forward pods to build momemtum and take the play to the Hornsea line and over next to the posts. Scoring two tries in almost idential plays Grimsby managed to bring the game level at 24-24 with only 7 minutes left on the clock.
Things were getting tense, however, the Hornsea forwards continued to deliver with a solid carries in the Grimsby half of the field and an impending scrum saw the Hornsea scrum half Harvey W take the ball down the blind side and skip passed a couple of defenders to score the winning try in the last minute of the game.

Full Time 24-29

Hornsea's Man of the Match went to Harvey W for his control of the ball around the field and his two tries, including the match winner!

It was a fantastic match to watch, and both teams should be proud of the rugby they played in such difficult conditions. Well done to all the players from both Hornsea and Grimsby!

Hornsea & Holderness U16’s Thursday night training saw 16 boys down at the Hollis - even though we are in the closing stages of the season there’s still the commitment and effort from the boys.
We looked at busting the tackle, creating space for the offload and executing the offload during a tackle.
Finished the evening with some touch and pass.
Good session and nice to see the new boys progressing, and importantly having fun!!

Well done all!!
