Hornsea & Holderness U16's travelled over the Humber this weekend to play at Grimsby RUFC.
The tail end of storm Dave created difficult conditions for open, flowing rugby with very strong winds and horizontal rain at times during the match.
Even with the wind in their faces, it didnt take the Hornsea team long to get into their stride, as the forwards that have played a big part in the recent results continued to dominate the contact points with Jack G, Cohen K and Oliver K leading the way. It was on 7 minutes when Hornsea scored the first points of the game. After a well worked penalty saw the visitors 5 meters from the try line, before a switch ball from Harvey W to the blind side for Ben T to carve his way over the try line. With confidence levels high and even in horrendous conditions the Hornsea backs moved the ball across the back line with Daniel C, Tom S and Freddy R all having long runs with the ball in hand.
On 16 minutes a break from Freddy R and Daniel C down the left wing saw Harry H come within a meter of the try line before being bundled into touch.
Grimsby capitalised after a spilt ball on 26 minutes to score their first points of the game, which really was against the run of play at the time. Grimsby continued to use their big forwards to rumble the ball repeatedly down field, one after another that really created the Hornsea defence problems, however strong tackling from Harry F, Jayden N and Will B in particular managed to halt them on the 22 yard line. The pendulum swung in Hornsea's favour when the fly half William H kicked a huge 20:20 kick to bring the play down into the Grimsby danger zone.
The following lineout was collected well and the ball moved again along the Hornsea backs that saw Tom S dart over and plant the ball down to the right hand side of the sticks. William H converting.
Half Time 5 - 12
The Hornsea team really knew they were in a battle and knew they'd have to dig deep to get a result out of the game. However, it was Grimsby that managed to cross the whitewash first in the second half out by the left hand corner flag bringing the scores even closer after 5 minutes of play (10-12).
With the wind at their backs Hornsea used this to their advantage and from a scrum on the half way the ball was passed out to the right before being kicked against the play left to find the Hornsea scrum half Harvey W who fly-hacked the ball down field to the try line and touched down to get the score. William H adding the 2 points.
Hornsea were definitely having a purple patch in the game, albeit the free flowing passing had stopped, largely due to the weather conditions, it didn't stop the Hornsea forwards on a rampage down the field, with Dexter E, Jayden N and Freddy R having a long carry, before Logan K taking his turn and crossing the line, to only have it ruled out for a double movement.
Within a minute Hornsea were back contesting against the Grimsby line Cohen T trying to cross to be pushed back but the next carry saw Oliver K cross 10 meters out from the left hand touch line. Grimsby started trying different things, trying to break the Hornsea defence, by moving their forwards to the flanks and only through some gritty tackling from Jacob H, Jayden N and Harry F kept them from breaking out of their 25.
The following 10 minutes of the game saw a real change in the game plan from Grimsby as they used their forward pods to build momemtum and take the play to the Hornsea line and over next to the posts. Scoring two tries in almost idential plays Grimsby managed to bring the game level at 24-24 with only 7 minutes left on the clock.
Things were getting tense, however, the Hornsea forwards continued to deliver with a solid carries in the Grimsby half of the field and an impending scrum saw the Hornsea scrum half Harvey W take the ball down the blind side and skip passed a couple of defenders to score the winning try in the last minute of the game.
Full Time 24-29
Hornsea's Man of the Match went to Harvey W for his control of the ball around the field and his two tries, including the match winner!
It was a fantastic match to watch, and both teams should be proud of the rugby they played in such difficult conditions. Well done to all the players from both Hornsea and Grimsby!
