Ahoy there from all of us at Huddersfield Sailing Club!
Based at Boshaw Whams Reservoir, we are a family-orientated club offering a warm welcome to new members.
If you've never tried sailing, let us explain why you should give sailing a try....
We’re small and friendly..
We’re a friendly, helpful bunch and the small water is ideal for people of all ages and abilities, including families and children, to learn to sail.
We like to help you learn..
Whilst we are not a training centre, Club volunteers provide informal coaching for new members who haven’t sailed before – if you’re interested in sailing and keen to learn, we’ll be just as keen to pass on our enthusiasm for the sport! We’re happy for children to come along, but they must be always accompanied by a responsible adult.
Sailors come in all shapes, sizes and ages!
Don’t be put off by thinking you need to be super active and sporty – just come and have a go – you can go at your own pace - it might be just the thing to get you moving more!
It doesn’t cost a lot!
The Club was stablished way back in 1958, and the large Clubhouse with kitchen and changing rooms was built by our early members. We’re proud to say we still do our own maintenance; we hold monthly Sunday morning working parties and our Wednesday morning club tackles jobs on a weekly basis. All of this allows us to keep our membership fees down - a family membership is just £155 for the year and members can hire club boats for as little as £3 for the afternoon.
You can come for a taster session…
You can make a date to have a free, no obligation, taster session with an experienced helm. These take around an hour and you’ll find out whether you like the idea of being on the water (or not!).
No wetsuit, no worries!
We’ve got lots of spare wetsuits and wet shoes for you to borrow until you work out if sailing is really for you. We also provide buoyancy aids for your safety on and around the water.
We’re around at the weekends…
Our main organised activity is fleet and handicap racing which takes place on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from March to November and Wednesday evenings in the summer months. We welcome leisure sailing in and amongst the racing, so don’t worry if you don’t have a competitive streak, the racers will give beginners a wide berth.
It’s not all sailing!
Well obviously, sailing is what we do, but we also like to party. We hold social events in the club house during the season and have a very active “Ladies who Launch” social group which meets for lunch, nights out, walks, and our annual infamous Christmas party night!
You’ll meet new friends…
Even if you’re really a fair-weather sailor (and let’s face it you know all about the weather conditions of Hade Edge) you can still come across and while away the afternoon chatting, having a cuppa, enjoying the beautiful view and being entertained by the sailing. If you decide that sailing isn’t for you, you can be a non-sailing member at a reduced cost and just enjoy being part of a local group and meeting new people.
August/ September is the best time to start…
The water is warm (I’m afraid you’ll be in it sometimes as you learn the ropes!), the weather is mild and so you’re more likely to catch a few weekends in a row to practice your new skills.
Get in touch…
Have we persuaded you to at least investigate further? You can either pop in on a Saturday or a Sunday afternoon when you see boats on the water, send a message via our page or email me at [email protected] to arrange at chat. We look forward to welcoming you…
