We are really sorry to hear that Courtlands has given its customers the bad news that after all their years it is closing . I’m sorry to say that we have had lots of enquiries for lessons but sadly we closed in 2018 .
Wishing the Halling family lots of happiness in whatever new adventures they begin .

The sweetest kindest mare that ever ran a riding school passed away in the night . I owe so much to this little mare she gave us so much all the time . She really was Chibley Farm she taught hundreds of people to ride, she made so many friends and contacts.Dear Molly ❤️love you forever .
I thought we had lost her years ago not long after we opened Chibley …All hell broke loose at 4 in the morning, when the sheep , the stallion & the whole herd proved the fastest ever alarm for their best mate ! she had found some ultra juicy grass in the ditch but also found an ancient line of cattle wire which tore its way through her tendon as she attempted to free herself ! She trusted me enough to push her back into the cause so I could pull her leg free . If ever a Vet knew he had an open chequebook it was for her !! Daily bandages for nearly 8 months & we did it . She made it ! To be the wonderful horse that did so much for so many .
Our thanks go to Jan who became her mum after the school. Jan has been the best mum in the world for her and we all love her dearly for all she has done for her .

Hi just like to bring you up to date & to wish you all a very happy Christmas & please let’s have a 2022 that we can all enjoy .
Those of you who loved Molly she is doing really well . We did have a little scare health wise but she shrugged it off & is fine . Pip is also on fine form , Freebee has been eventing , Woody is getting more like Victor Meldrew every day & is particularly fluffy at the moment . Texas is still enjoying himself although I don’t have an updated picture . Remy is also well . Magic is in good health perhaps a little overweight but is looking for a new job & place to live with a loving adoptee so she can hopefully get her figure back for next year . For those of you that didn’t know we lost Rolly & I finally summoned up the courage to let Chloe go with him earlier this year after her many ongoing health issues . Rolly had an accident in the field so I shall never remember 2021 with a smile but that’s all part of having animals . Enjoy the pictures of Molly, Pip & Freebee & stay safe ❤️

So very sad to hear that another riding school has recently closed in Harpenden.
Again it states that it is not financially viable to continue to struggle on . In order to run licensed & approved …centres are expected to jump through so many hoops! These hoops do not come cheap especially if you are maintaining older buildings & older fencing , arenas & driveways . So basically all your sound reliable long term surviving riding schools who could really do with new facilities are hardest hit . If you try to pass these expenses on to clients you make riding lessons such an expensive hobby . It’s heartbreaking to consider what the future will be for our sport .
Our own experience back in 2018 of the spot checks …we passed our yearly health and safety check from the council which also includes vet checks on the horses & ponies their equipment & all relevant insurance but The new approvals criteria reqd from The British Horse Society was another story ….bear in mind you actually pay to be on the approved list . A conversation afterwards with The association of British Riding Schools as to how I was treated left us feeling as though we had been with the wrong team for all our years service . The ABRS were amazing & sad that we decided we didn’t want to continue with our new plans .
Where do you go as a new rider ?
I don’t really know !
Look for a licensed school whilst they still exist . Have an understanding of how they are trying to do a job ,working with animals & often children 😂 as well as adults . You can and will fall off . So be prepared for that & prepare the rider ! No !! it doesn’t always hurt ! The horse isn’t determined you are coming off. Most horses and ponies used for the job are the kindest of souls but it is an animal & therefore it has a brain so no one can guarantee it’s every reaction .
Presently horse and pony prices have rocketed so trying to replace stock that really requires a saint hood for its behaviour is so expensive !
Colleges for equine studies sprang up with good amounts of funding supplied but not surprising they don’t run as riding schools & yet their very creation took away what we all knew as working pupils . They were the original staff base and like myself began the formation of new yards running with a vast knowledge of exactly how much hard work and dedication was involved. In the real world there is no spare college funding pot to sign off expenses , vet bills etc . Anyone with a dog or cat knows how there can suddenly be a nasty old vet bill. Imagine having ten little ones and one enormous one in a year !
So if you find a good Riding school treasure it they should welcome you with a big smile & they are becoming very rare !
