1. Footwork
Efficiency is everything, so don't confuse movement with lunging. Keep your movement tight. The bigger the step you take, the slower you are, because you have significantly more weight to transfer. Small, sharp steps keep your feet firmly under your shoulders so you are always balanced and loaded to fire or slip. If you need to exit off the ropes or come back to the centre of the ring, then bigger steps work. Remember feet first.
2. Ring Generalship
You have to control the centre of the ring. Ring generalship is about making the other guy fight your fight. Are you intelligently cutting off the ring instead of just following them? Are you pinning them on the ropes? Judges heavily favor the fighter who is clearly dictating the pace of the bout.
3. Competitiveness
The amateurs isn't just a light point-scoring fencing match; it requires heart. If you end up in an exchange, you cannot just shell up and accept the punches. You have to bite down, match their intensity, and return fire to prove to the judges you are the one winning the rounds. If they throw 3 you throw 4. Aim to outwork your opponent by being busier.
4. Starting and Finishing the Round Strong
Judges are human, and psychology dictates that they remember the very beginning and the very end of a round the most clearly. You have set the pace and start strong at the start of the round to set the tone and establish dominance early. Then, when you hear the 10-second clapper, empty the tank. Flurry hard, leave a lasting impression, and steal the round right before the bell.
